Lume sells both deodorants and antiperspirants, which is where the confusion comes from. Most of Lume’s original product line is aluminum-free deodorant, meaning it fights odor but does not reduce sweating. However, Lume also offers a separate antiperspirant formula that contains 17.6% aluminum sesquichlorohydrate as its active ingredient. The product you’re looking at depends on which version you pick up.

How the Two Lume Formulas Differ

Lume’s aluminum-free deodorants are the products most people associate with the brand. These come in sticks, creams, and sprays, and they work by targeting the bacteria that cause body odor rather than blocking sweat. They contain mandelic acid as a key ingredient, which lowers the skin’s pH to create an environment where odor-causing bacteria struggle to survive.

Lume’s antiperspirant line is a different product entirely. Listed in the FDA’s DailyMed database, this formula includes aluminum sesquichlorohydrate at 17.6%, which is a standard aluminum compound that temporarily plugs sweat ducts to reduce the amount of moisture reaching the skin’s surface. This version also contains mandelic acid among its inactive ingredients, so it combines sweat reduction with Lume’s odor-fighting approach.

If avoiding aluminum matters to you, check the label carefully. The aluminum-free versions are clearly marked, but the antiperspirant version exists and looks similar in branding.

How Lume’s Deodorant Controls Odor Without Aluminum

Sweat itself is mostly odorless. The smell comes from bacteria on your skin breaking down sweat and dead skin cells, producing gases in the process. Traditional antiperspirants sidestep this by reducing sweat volume. Lume’s deodorant takes a different route: it makes your skin’s surface more acidic, which disrupts the bacteria responsible for the smell.

Mandelic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, is the main driver here. It lowers the pH of your skin so odor-causing bacteria, particularly anaerobic types that thrive in warm skin folds, can’t function well. It also exfoliates dead skin cells, which removes the material those bacteria feed on. On top of that, mandelic acid has natural antimicrobial and antifungal properties, giving it a multi-pronged effect against odor.

Some Lume formulas also include tapioca starch or arrowroot powder. These don’t block sweat the way aluminum does. Instead, they absorb surface moisture and reduce friction, which can make you feel drier even though your sweat glands are still functioning normally.

What Lume Won’t Do

If your main concern is visible sweat marks or heavy perspiration, Lume’s aluminum-free deodorants won’t solve that. Powders and starches can absorb some moisture, but they don’t provide the measurable sweat reduction that aluminum-based antiperspirants deliver by physically blocking sweat ducts. For people who sweat heavily, the difference is noticeable.

Lume’s antiperspirant version does address sweating, but it works the same way any aluminum-based antiperspirant does. There’s nothing unique about its sweat-blocking mechanism compared to other brands on the shelf.

The “Whole Body” Claim

Lume markets itself as a “whole body” deodorant, safe for use beyond your underarms. The brand’s advertising suggests applying it anywhere odor develops, including feet, under-breast areas, and the groin region. This is where some caution is warranted.

Dermatologists have flagged that applying acidic or fragranced products near mucous membranes, particularly around the vaginal area, risks disrupting the local microbiome. The skin on different body parts varies in sensitivity and bacterial composition. While using Lume on your feet or underarms is straightforward, applying it to more delicate areas is a different calculation. Products with fragrance and exfoliating acids can cause irritation in areas with thinner skin, even if they’re well-tolerated under your arms.

Choosing Between the Two Versions

Your choice depends on what you’re trying to manage. If body odor is the issue and you’d rather avoid aluminum, Lume’s deodorant line targets the bacterial process behind the smell. It won’t stop you from sweating, but for many people, odor control is the priority anyway.

If sweat reduction matters, either Lume’s own antiperspirant formula or any other aluminum-based antiperspirant will do the job. The aluminum compound in Lume’s antiperspirant version is the same type of ingredient used across the antiperspirant category. The added mandelic acid may offer extra odor protection, but the sweat-blocking effect comes from the aluminum, full stop.
