Is Malta Goya Good for You? Benefits & Side Effects

Malta Goya is not a health drink. It’s a sweet, carbonated malt beverage with roughly 30 grams of sugar per bottle, most of it from high fructose corn syrup and corn syrup. While malt-based ingredients do carry some nutritional interest, the sugar content puts Malta Goya closer to soda than to a health food. That said, it has a long cultural history in Latin American and Caribbean communities, and understanding what’s actually in it helps you decide where it fits in your diet.

What’s Actually in Malta Goya

The ingredient list, in order: water, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, pale malt, caramel malt, caramel color, calcium sulfate, phosphoric acid, salt, and hops. The first three ingredients after water are all sweeteners, which tells you sugar dominates the formula. A standard 12-ounce bottle contains around 150 calories and roughly 30 to 37 grams of sugar, comparable to a can of Coca-Cola.

Caramel color, used to give Malta its dark appearance, has drawn scrutiny from food safety groups because certain types can contain trace amounts of a potentially harmful byproduct formed during manufacturing. Phosphoric acid, also found in colas, adds tartness but in large amounts over time can affect calcium absorption and bone health. Neither ingredient is dangerous in small quantities, but they’re worth noting if you drink Malta regularly.

Sugar and Blood Sugar Impact

The biggest health concern with Malta Goya is its sugar load. Two sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup and corn syrup, appear before the malt ingredients on the label. That means sugar contributes more to the drink by weight than the barley malt does.

Non-alcoholic malt beverages as a category have a high estimated glycemic index, around 80 out of 100, due to their starch content and sugars like maltose and maltotriose. For reference, pure glucose scores 100, and white bread scores about 75. A glycemic index of 80 means Malta Goya can spike your blood sugar quickly, which triggers a corresponding insulin surge. Over time, frequent spikes like this contribute to insulin resistance, weight gain, and increased risk for type 2 diabetes.

If you’re managing blood sugar, whether due to diabetes, prediabetes, or simply trying to reduce sugar intake, Malta Goya is one of the drinks worth limiting or avoiding. It delivers sugar as fast as most sodas do, despite its reputation as a more “natural” beverage.

Does the Malt Offer Any Benefits?

Barley malt itself is nutritionally interesting. In animal studies, barley malt has been shown to increase production of butyric acid in the gut, a short-chain fatty acid that feeds the cells lining your colon and has anti-inflammatory properties. Rats fed barley malt also showed improvements in gut barrier function, with the malt appearing to counteract some of the damage caused by high-fat diets, including changes in intestinal permeability (sometimes called “leaky gut”).

However, there’s a catch. When malt is caramelized, as it is in dark malt beverages, it develops high levels of compounds called advanced glycation end-products. In the same research, these compounds partially blocked the gut-health benefits that unprocessed malt provided. Since Malta Goya contains caramel malt and caramel color, the malt’s potential benefits are likely diminished in this particular drink. You’d get more from eating whole barley or less-processed malt products.

Malta and Breastfeeding

In many Caribbean and Latin American households, Malta is given to breastfeeding mothers with the belief that it increases milk supply. There is actually some scientific basis for this tradition, though it’s not as straightforward as drinking a bottle of Malta.

A randomized controlled trial tested a barley malt-based supplement (containing beta-glucan, a fiber found in barley, along with lemon balm) in mothers of preterm infants. The group taking the supplement produced significantly more milk: an average of 95 mL per session compared to 62.5 mL in the placebo group, and total milk volume during the study was about 43% higher in the supplement group (6,036 mL versus 4,209 mL). The researchers concluded the supplement was both safe and effective.

This is encouraging, but the supplement tested was a concentrated barley malt extract with specific active compounds, not a sugar-sweetened carbonated drink. Malta Goya contains some malt, but it’s unclear whether the amount is enough to produce the same effect. The sugar and other additives also introduce downsides that a targeted supplement wouldn’t. If you’re interested in barley’s galactagogue properties, a barley-based supplement or simply eating more whole barley and oats may be a better approach.

Digestive Side Effects

Malta Goya is carbonated, and carbonated beverages are a common trigger for gas, bloating, and burping. The carbonation introduces air into your digestive system, and the combination of sugar and fermentation-derived compounds can feed gut bacteria in ways that produce additional gas. If you’re prone to bloating or have irritable bowel syndrome, drinking Malta regularly could worsen those symptoms. Drinking it cold and slowly, rather than gulping it, reduces the amount of air you swallow.

How Malta Compares to Soda

People often assume Malta is healthier than soda because it’s made with malt and has no alcohol. In practice, the nutritional gap is small. Both deliver roughly the same amount of sugar per serving. Both use high fructose corn syrup. Both contain phosphoric acid and caramel color. Malta does contain trace B vitamins and minerals from the barley malt, which soda lacks entirely, but the amounts are modest and don’t offset 30-plus grams of sugar.

If you enjoy Malta Goya, treating it as an occasional indulgence rather than a daily drink is the practical middle ground. One bottle now and then won’t cause problems for most people. But drinking it daily, especially multiple bottles, adds a significant amount of sugar to your diet with minimal nutritional return. The malt-derived benefits that do exist in barley are better obtained through whole grains, less-processed malt products, or targeted supplements.
