How Much Caffeine Is in Matcha

Matcha powder contains 19 to 44 mg of caffeine per gram. A typical serving uses half a teaspoon to one full teaspoon (2 to 4 grams), putting a single cup anywhere from 38 to 176 mg of caffeine. That range is wide because it depends on the grade of matcha, the brand, and how generously you scoop. A ceremonial-grade matcha made with one teaspoon of powder lands at the higher end, potentially delivering nearly your entire day’s caffeine budget in one drink.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists considers less than 200 mg of caffeine per day moderate, stating that this level does not appear to be a major contributing factor in miscarriage or preterm birth. The World Health Organization sets a slightly more generous threshold of 300 mg but still recommends that women above that level reduce their intake to lower the risk of pregnancy loss and low birth weight. If you stick with a smaller serving of matcha (around half a teaspoon) and don’t consume other caffeinated drinks or chocolate the same day, you can stay well within either guideline.

Why Caffeine Hits Harder During Pregnancy

Your body processes caffeine much more slowly when you’re pregnant. Outside of pregnancy, caffeine’s half-life is roughly 2.5 to 4.5 hours. By the third trimester, that stretches to about 15 hours, meaning a morning matcha can still be circulating at bedtime. Caffeine is also lipophilic, so it crosses the placenta freely. Once it reaches the fetus, neither the placenta nor the developing baby has the enzymes needed to break it down. This is why even moderate amounts matter more during pregnancy than at other times in your life.

The Folate Problem

Matcha is rich in compounds called catechins, the same antioxidants often promoted as a health benefit. During pregnancy, though, these catechins create a specific concern. They inhibit an enzyme your body uses to convert folate into its active, usable form. That same enzyme also plays a role in absorbing folate from your gut. The result is a double hit: less folate gets absorbed and less of what does get absorbed becomes active.

Folate is critical during early pregnancy for preventing neural tube defects like spina bifida. A study published through the National Institutes of Health found that the catechins in green tea are structurally similar to methotrexate, a known folate antagonist used in chemotherapy. That doesn’t mean matcha is as dangerous as chemotherapy drugs, but it does mean that heavy consumption could meaningfully reduce your folate levels at the exact time you need them most. If you drink matcha, separating it from your prenatal vitamin by at least a couple of hours is a reasonable precaution, and keeping your intake to one small serving helps limit the effect.

Lead and Heavy Metal Exposure

This is where matcha diverges most sharply from regular green tea. When you brew loose-leaf or bagged green tea, you steep the leaves and discard them. With matcha, you whisk the powdered leaf directly into water and drink the whole thing. That means you ingest whatever the tea plant absorbed from its soil, including heavy metals like lead.

Independent lab testing of popular matcha brands has found measurable lead contamination across the board, including in ceremonial-grade products. Tea plants are known to accumulate lead from soil and air pollution, and because matcha is shade-grown (which increases certain nutrient levels), the plants have a longer growing period to accumulate contaminants. There is no established “safe” level of lead exposure during pregnancy. Lead crosses the placenta, accumulates in fetal bone, and can affect neurological development.

The practical concern isn’t that a single cup of matcha will cause harm. It’s that daily consumption adds a low-level but consistent source of lead exposure on top of whatever you’re already getting from water, soil on produce, and other foods. If you’re drinking matcha occasionally, the exposure is minimal. If it’s a daily habit, the cumulative load becomes harder to dismiss, especially during pregnancy when the stakes for fetal development are highest.

How to Reduce Your Risk

If you want to keep matcha in your routine during pregnancy, a few adjustments can help. Use half a teaspoon or less per serving, which keeps caffeine closer to 38 to 50 mg and limits your catechin and heavy metal exposure. Count it toward your total daily caffeine intake, which includes coffee, tea, soda, and chocolate. Take your prenatal vitamin at a different time of day than your matcha to give folate the best chance of being absorbed without interference.

Choosing a brand that provides third-party testing for heavy metals is worth the effort, though testing has shown that even premium brands carry some level of contamination. If lead exposure is your primary concern, switching to steeped green tea is a straightforward alternative. You still get some caffeine and antioxidants, but because you discard the leaves, your exposure to whatever they absorbed from the soil drops significantly. A cup of steeped green tea typically contains 25 to 50 mg of caffeine, making it easier to fit into a pregnancy-safe caffeine budget.

What About L-Theanine

Matcha contains L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes calm focus and is often cited as a reason matcha feels less jittery than coffee. There is limited research on L-theanine’s safety during pregnancy. The Cleveland Clinic notes that pregnant and breastfeeding women should exercise caution with L-theanine due to this gap in evidence. The small amount naturally present in a cup of matcha is likely less concerning than a concentrated supplement, but it’s another ingredient with an incomplete safety profile during pregnancy.

One Cup or None

A small, occasional matcha is unlikely to cause problems for most pregnancies. The caffeine in a half-teaspoon serving falls well within recommended limits, and the folate and lead concerns are dose-dependent. The risk increases with frequency and portion size. Daily large servings push you closer to the caffeine ceiling, compound the folate interference, and add a steady trickle of heavy metal exposure that you wouldn’t get from steeped tea or coffee. For someone who loves matcha and wants to keep it as an occasional treat, scaling down the serving size and frequency is the most practical approach.
