Is Matcha Tea Acidic or Alkaline? The pH Truth

Matcha tea is mildly acidic, with a pH that averages around 5.7. That places it closer to neutral (pH 7) than most beverages people drink daily, including coffee, orange juice, and soda. For context, pure water sits at 7, coffee lands between 4.5 and 5, and black tea typically falls around 4.9 to 5.5. Matcha is one of the gentler options on the acidity spectrum.

Where Matcha Falls on the pH Scale

A study published in the National Institutes of Health database tested ten different matcha samples and found their pH values ranged from 5.58 to 5.94, with an overall average of 5.71. That’s a narrow range, meaning the mild acidity of matcha is fairly consistent regardless of brand or origin. The variation between the least and most acidic samples was less than half a pH point.

To put that in perspective, the critical pH at which tooth enamel begins to erode is around 4.5. Matcha sits comfortably above that threshold, so it poses far less risk to your teeth than fruit juices (pH 3 to 4), sodas (pH 2.5 to 3.5), or even some herbal teas that dip below 4.5. If dental erosion is a concern, matcha is a relatively safe choice among flavored beverages.

How Matcha Affects Your Stomach

The pH of a drink in your cup is only part of the picture. What matters more for many people is how a beverage behaves once it reaches the stomach. Matcha contains tannins and caffeine, both of which can increase stomach acid production. Tannins also have an astringent quality that some people feel as a slight tightening or unsettled sensation in the gut, especially on an empty stomach.

That said, research looking specifically at tea and acid reflux has found no significant association between tea drinking and reflux symptoms. A study in Tzu-Chi Medical Journal concluded that drinking tea or coffee, even with added sugar or milk, was not linked to reflux symptoms or erosive esophagitis. So while matcha can stimulate some additional stomach acid, it doesn’t appear to be a meaningful trigger for most people with reflux concerns.

If you do notice stomach discomfort after drinking matcha, the most likely culprit is drinking it on an empty stomach, when tannins and caffeine hit the stomach lining without any food to buffer them. Having matcha with or after a meal typically eliminates this issue.

Acidic in the Cup, Alkalizing in the Body

There’s an important distinction between how acidic a food or drink is before you consume it and how your body processes it afterward. Many plant-based foods and drinks are mildly acidic going in but have a net alkalizing effect on the body once metabolized. Tea in general has a slightly negative potential renal acid load (PRAL), meaning it leaves behind alkaline mineral residues rather than acid-forming ones. While matcha hasn’t been measured separately for PRAL, its mineral profile is similar to other green teas, which consistently score as mildly alkaline-forming.

This distinction matters if you’re thinking about matcha in the context of an “alkaline diet” or overall dietary acid load. Despite its mild acidity in liquid form, matcha works more like fruits and vegetables in terms of how your kidneys process it.

How Preparation Changes Acidity and Taste

The way you prepare matcha affects how acidic and harsh it tastes, even if the actual pH doesn’t shift dramatically. Water temperature is the biggest variable. The bitter and astringent compounds in matcha, primarily catechins and caffeine, extract much more aggressively at higher temperatures. Water above 80°C (176°F) pulls out catechins efficiently, while boiling water at 100°C extracts them dramatically, producing a noticeably more bitter, sharper cup.

The sweet spot for most people is 80 to 85°C. At this range, the amino acids responsible for matcha’s smooth, savory umami flavor dissolve well, while catechin and caffeine extraction stays controlled. The result is a balanced cup that tastes less harsh and feels gentler on the stomach. Cold-brewed matcha suppresses catechin extraction even further, producing a cleaner, milder drink, though it can taste flatter overall.

Time also plays a role. Every second matcha powder stays in contact with hot water, extraction continues. Whisking for 20 to 30 seconds and drinking promptly gives you a different cup than letting it sit for several minutes. The longer it sits, the more astringent and bitter it becomes.

Matcha Compared to Other Drinks

  • Coffee: pH 4.5 to 5.0, noticeably more acidic than matcha and a stronger stimulant of stomach acid
  • Black tea: pH 4.9 to 5.5, slightly more acidic than matcha on average
  • Orange juice: pH 3.3 to 4.2, highly acidic and erosive to enamel
  • Matcha: pH 5.6 to 5.9, among the mildest common beverages
  • Water: pH 7.0, neutral

Among caffeinated drinks, matcha is one of the least acidic options available. If you’ve switched from coffee to matcha hoping for something easier on your stomach, the pH difference alone is meaningful, and the lower volume of caffeine per serving (roughly 70 mg versus 95 mg in a standard cup of coffee) means less stimulation of gastric acid as well.
