Is Microcrystalline Cellulose Vegan or Not?

Microcrystalline cellulose is vegan. It comes entirely from plant sources, typically wood pulp or cotton, and the manufacturing process uses only chemical reagents with no animal-derived ingredients. You’ll find it listed on supplement and food labels as MCC or by its EU additive code E460(i), and it’s one of the most common inactive ingredients in tablets and capsules.

What It’s Made From

Microcrystalline cellulose is purified plant fiber. Most commercial MCC is extracted from wood pulp or cotton linters (the short fibers left on cottonseed after ginning). Cellulose is the structural material in plant cell walls, so at its core, MCC is just a highly refined version of the same fiber found in every fruit, vegetable, and grain you eat.

Researchers have also successfully extracted MCC from a wide range of other plant sources, including fruit stems, agricultural waste, and various grasses. Regardless of the starting material, the end product is the same: a fine, white, odorless powder made up of tiny cellulose crystals.

How It’s Manufactured

The production process involves breaking down raw plant material through a series of chemical steps, none of which require animal-derived inputs. A typical sequence looks like this:

  • Water treatment: The raw plant material is soaked to remove non-cellulosic biomass.
  • Alkali treatment: A sodium hydroxide solution dissolves lignin, hemicellulose, and other non-cellulose components.
  • Bleaching: Sodium chlorite whitens the remaining fibers, often repeated several times to fully decolorize them.
  • Acid hydrolysis: The bleached fibers are heated in dilute sulfuric acid (around 40% concentration at 85 to 95°C for 40 to 50 minutes). This breaks down the amorphous regions of cellulose, leaving behind only the crystalline portions.

The result is filtered, washed, and dried into the microcrystalline cellulose powder used in manufacturing. Every reagent in this chain is synthetic or mineral-based. Some newer production methods use cellulase enzymes derived from fungi like Aspergillus niger rather than acid hydrolysis, but these enzymes are also non-animal in origin.

Why It’s in So Many Products

MCC serves several roles in tablets and processed foods. In supplements, it works as a binder that holds tablet ingredients together, a diluent that distributes active ingredients evenly throughout the tablet, and a disintegrant that helps the tablet break apart in your digestive tract so the active ingredients can be absorbed. In food products, it functions as an anti-caking agent, a texture modifier, and a fat replacer in low-calorie formulations.

Its popularity comes down to the fact that it’s cheap, chemically inert, and plays well with almost any active ingredient. It passes through your body largely undigested, much like dietary fiber.

The Animal Testing Question

While MCC itself contains no animal ingredients, its safety profile was established partly through animal studies, which matters to some vegans who define veganism beyond just dietary ingredients. Toxicology research on microcrystalline cellulose has historically been conducted in rats, rabbits, dogs, mice, and hamsters. In one long-term study, rats were fed extremely high doses (15,000 mg per kilogram of body weight) for 72 weeks with no adverse effects on survival, feed efficiency, or blood markers.

These studies were conducted to satisfy regulatory safety requirements rather than by MCC manufacturers for marketing purposes. This is a common situation with food additives: virtually every ingredient approved for human consumption has undergone animal testing at some point in its regulatory history. Whether this disqualifies an ingredient as “vegan” depends on your personal framework. Most vegan certification organizations consider MCC vegan because the product itself is entirely plant-derived and no ongoing animal testing is required for its continued use.

Other Additives to Watch For

If you’re scanning a supplement label and spotted microcrystalline cellulose, you can check that one off as plant-based. But other common inactive ingredients in the same product deserve a closer look. Magnesium stearate, for example, is the magnesium salt of stearic acid, which can be sourced from either animal fat or vegetable fat. Unless the label specifies “vegetable-sourced” or the product carries a vegan certification, there’s no way to know from the ingredient list alone.

Gelatin capsules are another obvious one, derived from animal collagen. Look for “vegetable capsule” or “hypromellose” (HPMC) on the label as plant-based alternatives. Shellac, sometimes used as a tablet coating, comes from the lac insect. Lactose, used as a filler in some medications, is a milk sugar. MCC itself is straightforwardly vegan, but the product it’s in may not be, so it’s worth reading the full ingredient list rather than stopping at one item.
