Milk is neither purely good nor purely bad for you. It delivers a strong package of nutrients, but it also comes with trade-offs depending on your body, your health risks, and what else you eat. The honest answer is that milk is a convenient source of protein and calcium that most people can include in a healthy diet, but it’s not essential and it’s not risk-free.
What One Cup of Milk Actually Gives You
A single cup of whole milk contains about 8 grams of protein, 276 milligrams of calcium (roughly a quarter of most adults’ daily needs), and about 98 IU of vitamin D. That’s a solid nutritional profile from one glass. The calcium in milk has about 30% bioavailability, meaning your body absorbs around 100 milligrams of the 276 listed on the label. That’s comparable to what you’d get from calcium-fortified orange juice or calcium-set tofu, and better absorbed than calcium from most leafy greens (with the exception of bok choy, which has a higher absorption rate of about 50%).
Whole milk also contains about 4.5 grams of saturated fat per cup. If you drink two or three glasses a day, that saturated fat adds up quickly toward the recommended daily limit. Switching to low-fat or skim milk cuts that number significantly while preserving most of the protein and calcium.
Heart Health: Not Harmful, Not Helpful

So milk fat isn’t dangerous on its own, but it’s not doing your heart any favors compared to plant-based fats and whole grains.
Inflammation: Likely Neutral or Mildly Beneficial
A common claim is that dairy promotes inflammation. The clinical evidence doesn’t support this. A systematic review of randomized trials in overweight and obese adults found that dairy consumption does not worsen inflammatory markers. In fact, several studies showed the opposite: people eating more dairy had improvements in key inflammation markers like C-reactive protein and certain immune signaling molecules. One large observational study found that people consuming more than two servings of dairy per day had CRP levels 29% lower than those eating one serving or less.
The overall conclusion from researchers is that dairy is either neutral or mildly beneficial for inflammation. It certainly doesn’t appear to be the inflammatory trigger that some popular health advice suggests.
Prostate Cancer: A Real Concern for Men
The clearest negative signal for milk comes from prostate cancer research. A study following over 28,000 men in the Adventist Health Study found that those with higher dairy intake had a meaningfully elevated risk. Men at the 90th percentile of dairy consumption (about 430 grams per day, or roughly two cups of milk) had a 27% higher risk of prostate cancer compared to men at the 10th percentile (about 20 grams per day). For advanced prostate cancers, the increase was 38%.
Importantly, non-dairy sources of calcium did not show the same association. This suggests something specific to dairy, not just calcium itself, may be involved. One leading hypothesis points to hormones and growth factors naturally present in cow’s milk. The risk increases were nonlinear, meaning even modest dairy intake appeared to raise risk, with the steepest jump at relatively low doses. For men, especially those with a family history of prostate cancer, this is worth weighing against milk’s nutritional benefits.
Acne and Skin
If you’ve noticed breakouts after drinking milk, you’re not imagining it. Dairy consumption has been linked to acne through its effects on hormones. Milk naturally contains and stimulates insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and influences androgen activity, both of which play roles in triggering acne. The connection appears stronger with skim milk than whole milk in some studies, possibly because of differences in processing or hormonal concentration. This doesn’t mean milk causes acne in everyone, but for people prone to breakouts, reducing dairy is a reasonable experiment.
Weight Loss: Don’t Count on It
You may have seen claims that dairy helps with weight loss, often attributed to its calcium or protein content. The evidence doesn’t hold up well. While one meta-analysis suggested that dairy-rich, calorie-restricted diets improved fat loss and preserved lean body mass, that analysis had significant limitations and inconsistent results across trials. The calcium in cheese can theoretically reduce fat absorption by binding to fatty acids in the gut, but this effect has been shown to be trivially small in practice.
The bottom line from nutrition researchers: dairy consumption on its own has no clinically meaningful effect on energy balance or weight loss. Milk’s protein can help you feel full, which is useful, but it’s not a weight-loss tool.
Lactose Intolerance: More Common Than You Think
The question of whether milk is good for you is partly a question of whether your body can handle it. Between 30 and 50 million Americans are lactose intolerant, meaning they lack enough of the enzyme needed to break down milk sugar. The prevalence varies dramatically by ancestry. Over 90% of Asian Americans are lactose intolerant, about 80% of African Americans and Native Americans, while the condition is least common among people with Northern European heritage.
If you’re lactose intolerant, drinking regular milk causes bloating, gas, cramps, and diarrhea. Lactose-free milk provides the same nutrients without the digestive problems. Fermented dairy like yogurt and aged cheese also contain less lactose and are often tolerated better.
How to Think About Milk in Your Diet
Milk is a genuinely good source of protein, calcium, and vitamin D. For children, adolescents, and people who struggle to get enough of these nutrients elsewhere, it’s a practical and affordable option. You can get the same calcium from fortified plant milks, tofu, or certain vegetables, but you have to be intentional about it. Spinach, despite its reputation, delivers almost no usable calcium because compounds in the leaves block absorption, leaving you with only about 5% of its calcium content.
If you’re a man concerned about prostate cancer risk, moderating dairy intake makes sense given the dose-dependent relationship seen in research. If you’re prone to acne, cutting back on milk for a few weeks can help you gauge whether dairy is a trigger. If you’re focused on heart health, the type of fat you replace dairy with matters more than whether you drink milk at all. Swapping a glass of whole milk for a handful of walnuts or a serving of oatmeal is a measurably better trade for your cardiovascular system than simply adding or removing milk from your routine.
For most people, a moderate amount of milk (one to two servings per day) fits into a healthy diet without obvious harm. It’s not a superfood, and it’s not a poison. It’s a nutrient-dense food with specific trade-offs that depend on who you are and what else you’re eating.
