Yes, the standard Mounjaro pen sold in the United States is a pre-filled, single-dose auto-injector. Each pen contains exactly one dose of medication in 0.5 mL of solution, and it is designed to be used once and then discarded. You do not need to measure, mix, or dial a dose.
How the Single-Dose Pen Works
The Mounjaro single-dose pen is built for simplicity. The needle is hidden inside the device, so you never need to see or handle it. There are no cartridges to load, no air bubbles to clear, and no priming steps. You remove the gray base cap, place the clear base flat against your skin, press the purple injection button, and hold it in place.
Two audible clicks guide you through the process. The first click signals the injection has started. The second click means it’s finished. After that second click, a gray plunger becomes visible through the pen body, confirming the full dose was delivered. The entire injection takes only a few seconds.
Available Strengths
Mounjaro single-dose pens come in six strengths, each containing 0.5 mL of solution:
- 2.5 mg (starting dose)
- 5 mg
- 7.5 mg
- 10 mg
- 12.5 mg
- 15 mg
Your prescriber selects the strength, and each pen is pre-filled with that exact amount. You don’t adjust anything on the device itself. As your dose increases over time, you’ll simply receive pens with a higher strength.
Single-Dose Pen vs. KwikPen
Mounjaro is also available in a different format called the KwikPen, which is a multi-dose, single-patient-use device containing four doses. The KwikPen works more like a traditional insulin pen: it requires priming before each injection to remove air bubbles, uses attachable pen needles, and has a dose window that shows a “0” when the full dose has been delivered. If the “0” doesn’t appear after injecting, you reinsert the needle and finish the injection without redialing.
The single-dose auto-injector is the more common format prescribed in the U.S. and is generally considered easier to use because it eliminates priming, needle attachment, and dose confirmation steps. The KwikPen may be more common in other markets, including Canada and parts of Europe.
Storage Before Use
Unused Mounjaro pens should be stored in the refrigerator. If you need to carry one with you or prefer to keep it at room temperature, an unused pen can stay unrefrigerated for up to 30 days as long as the temperature stays below 86°F (30°C). After 30 days out of the fridge, an unused pen should be thrown away even if it still contains medication. Don’t freeze the pen, and keep it out of direct sunlight or extreme heat.
Disposal After Use
Because the pen contains a built-in needle, it counts as a sharp and needs to go into a proper sharps disposal container immediately after use. Don’t throw it in the regular trash or recycling. A rigid, puncture-resistant container works. You can buy FDA-cleared sharps containers at most pharmacies, or use a heavy-duty household plastic container with a tight lid, like a laundry detergent bottle.
Fill the container no more than three-quarters full, then check your local guidelines for final disposal. Options vary by area but typically include drop-off sites at pharmacies or hospitals, household hazardous waste collection events, and mail-back programs.
