Olive oil is not a good sunscreen. It has an estimated SPF of about 8, which falls far below the SPF 30 minimum recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology. While olive oil contains compounds that offer some antioxidant benefits for skin, relying on it for sun protection leaves you exposed to the vast majority of UV radiation.
How Much UV Olive Oil Actually Blocks
Lab testing of plant oils puts olive oil’s sun protection factor at roughly 8. To put that in perspective, SPF 30 sunscreen blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 8 blocks only around 87%. That gap matters enormously over a day at the beach or even a long walk. The difference between blocking 87% and 97% of UV means you’re absorbing roughly four times as much burning radiation with olive oil compared to a standard sunscreen.
Other kitchen oils perform similarly or worse. Coconut oil lands around the same SPF 8 range, and many herbal essential oils fall between SPF 1 and 7. None of these come close to meeting the minimum protection threshold set by either the FDA or dermatology guidelines.
Olive Oil Can Actually Make Sun Damage Worse
The bigger concern isn’t just that olive oil blocks too little UV. It’s that olive oil may actively undermine your skin’s own defenses. Olive oil is roughly 70% oleic acid, a fatty acid that disrupts the outermost layer of skin and increases its permeability. Research on plant oils has found that oils high in oleic acid break down the skin barrier more aggressively than oils with a balanced fatty acid profile. Continuous topical application of oleic acid can even trigger dermatitis.
A compromised skin barrier means UV radiation, along with other irritants, penetrates more easily. The Cleveland Clinic has described applying olive oil before sun exposure as essentially priming yourself for sunburn.
The Antioxidant Benefits Are Real but Limited
Olive oil does contain polyphenols, and these compounds have genuine effects on skin cells exposed to UV. In lab studies on human skin cells, olive polyphenol fractions reduced the buildup of reactive oxygen species (the unstable molecules that damage DNA and accelerate aging) caused by UVA radiation. They also triggered damaged cells to self-destruct, which is actually a protective mechanism that clears out cells at risk of becoming cancerous.
Animal studies tell a similar story with an important caveat. When researchers applied olive oil to mice after UVB exposure, tumor development dropped dramatically, with roughly 60% fewer tumors compared to untreated mice. But when olive oil was applied before UV exposure, it provided almost no tumor protection at all. The researchers concluded that whatever active compounds in olive oil fight skin damage, they appear to be destroyed by UV light itself. In other words, olive oil’s protective ingredients break down in the very conditions where you’d need them most.
Olive Oil Degrades in Sunlight
When exposed to light, olive oil undergoes measurable chemical changes. Studies tracking the breakdown found that one of its key pigments degrades by more than 90% under light exposure, while its vitamin E content drops by 22 to 35%. The oil’s natural carotenoids (the same pigments that give carrots their color) held up better, acting as physical light filters, but they can’t compensate for the loss of other protective compounds.
This instability is the core problem with treating olive oil as sun protection. A proper sunscreen is formulated to remain stable on your skin under UV exposure for a predictable period. Olive oil’s beneficial compounds are actively consumed and destroyed by the same sunlight you’re trying to block.
What Olive Oil Can Do for Your Skin
None of this means olive oil is bad for skin in every context. Applied after sun exposure, its antioxidant properties may help reduce oxidative damage to skin cells. It’s also a decent moisturizer for many people, though those with sensitive or acne-prone skin should be cautious given oleic acid’s barrier-disrupting effects.
If you want the skin benefits of olive oil’s polyphenols, the safest approach is using it as part of an after-sun routine or as a nighttime moisturizer, not as a replacement for sunscreen. For actual UV protection, a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen remains the only reliable option. The two products serve completely different purposes, and treating one as a substitute for the other puts your skin at real risk.
