Ovulation happens after your period, roughly in the middle of your menstrual cycle. On a typical 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs around day 14, counting from the first day of your period. Your period marks the beginning of each new cycle, and ovulation follows about two weeks later.

Where Ovulation Falls in Your Cycle

Your menstrual cycle has two main phases separated by ovulation. The first phase, called the follicular phase, starts on the first day of your period and lasts until ovulation. During this time, one of your ovaries is preparing an egg for release. On average, this phase runs about 13 to 14 days, but it’s the most variable part of the cycle. It can be shorter or longer depending on hormones, stress, illness, and other factors.

The second phase begins right after ovulation and lasts about 14 days, ending when your next period starts. This phase is much more consistent from cycle to cycle. That’s why the most reliable way to pinpoint ovulation is actually to count backward: most people ovulate about 14 days before their next period begins, regardless of how long their overall cycle is.

Why the “Day 14” Rule Doesn’t Fit Everyone

A normal menstrual cycle lasts anywhere from 24 to 38 days. If your cycle is 24 days, you likely ovulate around day 10. If it’s 35 days, ovulation may not happen until day 21. The 14-day figure only applies neatly to a textbook 28-day cycle, and many people don’t have one.

The reason for this variation is that the first half of your cycle (before ovulation) stretches or shrinks, while the second half stays relatively fixed at about two weeks. So if your cycles tend to run long, it’s because your body is taking longer to prepare and release an egg, not because anything unusual is happening after ovulation.

What Triggers Ovulation

As your body prepares an egg during the first half of your cycle, estrogen levels climb. That rising estrogen eventually triggers a sharp spike in luteinizing hormone, often called LH. This LH surge is the direct signal that causes the ovary to release an egg, typically within 24 to 36 hours. The Fertile Window Around Ovulation

Once released, an egg survives for less than 24 hours. Sperm, on the other hand, can live inside the reproductive tract for three to five days. In practical terms, the five days leading up to ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself are the days when pregnancy is possible.

Physical Signs That Ovulation Is Near

Your body gives a few observable clues. The most noticeable for many people is a change in cervical mucus. In the days after your period, discharge tends to be thick, white, and dry. As ovulation approaches (around days 10 to 14 of a 28-day cycle), it becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy, resembling raw egg whites. This wet, slippery consistency lasts about three to four days and helps sperm travel more easily. Once ovulation passes, the mucus thickens again.

Basal body temperature also shifts. Your resting temperature rises slightly (about half a degree Fahrenheit) after ovulation and stays elevated for the rest of that cycle. The catch is that this rise only confirms ovulation after it has already happened, so it’s more useful for tracking patterns over several months than for predicting ovulation in real time.

Some people also notice mild one-sided pelvic pain, breast tenderness, or increased sex drive around ovulation, though these signs vary widely from person to person.

Estimating Ovulation With Irregular Cycles

If your cycle length changes from month to month, pinpointing ovulation takes a bit more tracking. One established method is to record the length of six to twelve consecutive cycles, then use the shortest and longest to estimate your fertile window. You subtract 18 from your shortest cycle to find the first potentially fertile day, and subtract 11 from your longest cycle to find the last. For example, if your shortest cycle is 26 days and your longest is 32, your fertile window would roughly fall between day 8 and day 21.

This approach casts a wide net, which is the point. With irregular cycles, ovulation can shift significantly from one month to the next. Combining calendar tracking with ovulation predictor kits or cervical mucus monitoring narrows the window more reliably than any single method alone.

The Sequence in Simple Terms

  • Days 1 to 5 (approximately): Your period. The lining of the uterus sheds, and your cycle resets.

  • Around day 14: Ovulation. The egg is released and is viable for up to 24 hours.
  • Days 15 to 28: The post-ovulation phase. If the egg isn’t fertilized, hormone levels drop and your next period begins.

These numbers assume a 28-day cycle. If yours is shorter or longer, the ovulation day shifts earlier or later, but the overall sequence stays the same: period first, ovulation in the middle, then the countdown to the next period.
