Is Pink Himalayan Salt Better for You? The Facts

Pink Himalayan salt is not meaningfully better for you than regular table salt. By weight, it contains roughly the same amount of sodium, and the trace minerals that give it its pink color exist in amounts too small to affect your health. In one important way, switching to pink salt can actually work against you: it contains almost no iodine, a nutrient that regular iodized table salt was specifically designed to deliver.

The Mineral Claim, by the Numbers

Pink Himalayan salt contains trace amounts of minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron. These are the source of its distinctive color and the centerpiece of most marketing. The problem is scale. The concentrations are so low that you would need to consume dangerously large quantities of salt to get a nutritionally relevant dose of any of them.

Consider iron, the mineral responsible for the pink hue. A typical serving of salt in a day (under 6 grams, if you’re following health guidelines) delivers a fraction of a milligram of iron from pink Himalayan salt. Your daily iron requirement is 8 to 18 milligrams depending on age and sex. You’d get more iron from a single bite of spinach. The same math applies to every other trace mineral in pink salt: present on a lab report, irrelevant on your plate.

Sodium Content Is Nearly Identical

One teaspoon of salt contains about 2,300 mg of sodium regardless of whether it’s pink, white, or gray. The American Heart Association notes that while coarser salts like Himalayan pink salt may seem to have less sodium per teaspoon, that’s only because the larger crystals don’t pack as tightly on the spoon. Gram for gram, the sodium content is essentially the same.

This matters because sodium is the reason health organizations recommend limiting salt in the first place. If you’re sprinkling pink salt more liberally because you believe it’s healthier, you may end up consuming more sodium than you would with regular table salt. The health risks of excess sodium, including high blood pressure and increased cardiovascular strain, don’t change based on the color of the crystals.

The Iodine Problem

Iodized table salt was introduced in the 1920s to prevent iodine deficiency, which causes thyroid problems and, in severe cases, developmental issues in children. It’s fortified to provide about 45 micrograms of iodine per gram. Pink Himalayan salt contains almost none, typically less than 0.1 milligram per kilogram, which is hundreds of times lower than iodized salt.

If you replace all the iodized salt in your diet with pink Himalayan salt and don’t eat iodine-rich foods like seafood, dairy, or seaweed regularly, you could gradually develop a shortfall. This is especially relevant for pregnant women, who need more iodine for fetal brain development. It’s one of the few areas where choosing pink salt over table salt creates a concrete nutritional disadvantage.

Processing and Additives

One genuinely different feature of pink Himalayan salt is how it’s produced. It’s mined by hand from ancient salt deposits in Pakistan using traditional methods. No explosives are used, and the salt is not chemically treated or refined. Regular table salt, by contrast, is typically processed to remove impurities and often contains anti-caking agents to prevent clumping.

For people who prefer less processed foods, this is a reasonable point in pink salt’s favor. Anti-caking agents in table salt (like calcium silicate) are considered safe by food regulators, but if minimizing additives matters to you, pink salt delivers on that front. Just recognize that “less processed” and “healthier” are not the same thing.

Heavy Metals Worth Knowing About

The same lack of processing that keeps pink salt free of additives also means it retains whatever contaminants exist naturally in the mine. Laboratory analyses have found that pink Himalayan salt tends to carry higher levels of heavy metals than refined table salt. Lead concentrations in pink salt samples have been measured at 100 to 400 parts per billion, and lead has been detected in 96% of salt products tested across varieties.

At the small amounts of salt most people consume daily, these levels are unlikely to pose an acute risk. But there is no established safe threshold for lead exposure, and the contamination is worth considering if you use pink salt heavily, or if you’re feeding it to young children who are more vulnerable to lead’s effects.

What Actually Matters for Your Health

The most important thing about any salt is how much of it you eat. The average American consumes about 3,400 mg of sodium per day, well above the 2,300 mg recommended limit. Most of that sodium comes from processed and restaurant foods, not from the salt shaker. Switching from table salt to pink Himalayan salt does nothing to address this.

If you enjoy the taste or texture of pink salt, there’s no strong reason to avoid it. It’s a perfectly fine seasoning. But treating it as a health upgrade misreads the evidence. The trace minerals are nutritionally insignificant, the sodium load is the same, and you lose the iodine that table salt was designed to provide. The best thing you can do for your health when it comes to salt is simply use less of it, regardless of what color it is.
