Is Pink Salt the Same as Himalayan Salt?

Pink salt and Himalayan salt are closely related but not identical. Pink salt is a broad category that includes any naturally pink-colored salt, regardless of where it comes from. Himalayan salt is one specific type of pink salt, mined from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan near the Himalayan mountain range. All Himalayan salt is pink salt, but not all pink salt is Himalayan.

Why the Names Get Used Interchangeably

Himalayan salt dominates the pink salt market so thoroughly that most people assume the two terms mean the same thing. If you pick up a bag of pink salt at a grocery store, there’s a good chance it is Himalayan salt. But several other pink salts exist, and they come from entirely different parts of the world with distinct flavor profiles and mineral makeups.

Murray River salt, for example, comes from an ancient underground aquifer in Australia’s Murray-Darling Basin. It has a pale apricot-pink color and a flaky texture quite different from the coarse crystals most people associate with Himalayan salt. Peruvian pink salt from Maras, in the Cusco region, is harvested by solar evaporation from mineral-rich mountain springs that have been feeding ancient terraced pools for centuries. Its color ranges from pink to cream with brown tints. Pink salt can also come from mines in the United States. Each source produces a salt with a slightly different mineral balance, which affects both color and taste.

What Makes Pink Salt Pink

The pink color comes primarily from trace minerals, especially iron. Himalayan salt is characterized by relatively large amounts of magnesium, silicon, potassium, titanium, and iron compared to other salts. Iron oxide is the main driver of the rosy hue, and the exact shade varies from pale pink to deep rose depending on how concentrated those trace minerals are in a given batch.

Despite the mineral content that gives it color, pink Himalayan salt is still overwhelmingly sodium chloride. Salt in general is about 98% sodium chloride by weight. Himalayan salt contains slightly less sodium chloride than refined table salt, but the difference is small enough that it barely matters in a typical recipe. The trace minerals that make up the remaining fraction are present in such tiny amounts that you’d need to eat unrealistic quantities of salt to get meaningful nutritional benefit from them.

The Iodine Gap

One practical difference worth knowing: pink salt, including Himalayan, is a poor source of iodine. Natural iodine levels in Himalayan salt are typically less than 2 milligrams per kilogram. Iodized table salt, by contrast, is fortified to provide roughly 45 milligrams of iodine per kilogram. That’s more than a twentyfold difference. If you’ve fully switched from iodized table salt to pink salt for all your cooking and seasoning, you may want to make sure you’re getting iodine from other sources like seafood, dairy, or eggs.

Trace Contaminants in Himalayan Salt

Because Himalayan salt is unrefined and mined from ancient seabed deposits, it contains trace amounts of elements you wouldn’t find in processed table salt. Testing has detected low levels of lead (100 to 400 parts per billion), and measurable traces of uranium, thorium, and radium from the geological formations where the salt formed. Aluminum has also been found in a majority of salt products tested, sometimes elevated by anti-caking agents.

These numbers sound alarming in isolation, but the concentrations are extremely small relative to daily intake. The amount of salt a person eats in a day is measured in grams, which means exposure to these contaminants stays well below thresholds considered harmful. Still, Himalayan pink salt actually shows higher heavy metal levels than many other salt types, which runs counter to its reputation as the “purest” option on the market.

How to Tell What You’re Buying

If the distinction matters to you, check the label. Genuine Himalayan salt will typically list Pakistan or the Khewra Salt Mine as its origin. Phrases like “pink sea salt” or “natural pink salt” without a specific geographic source could mean the salt comes from Australia, Peru, or elsewhere. Some brands use “Himalayan-style” language without the salt actually originating from Pakistan.

For everyday cooking, the functional differences between various pink salts are subtle. They all deliver sodium chloride with trace minerals and without the iodine fortification of table salt. Where they diverge is in texture, exact color, and minor flavor nuances that matter more as a finishing salt on a dish than as an ingredient dissolved into a pot of soup. If you’re buying pink salt for its look and mild mineral flavor, any variety will deliver that. If you specifically want salt from the Khewra Mine, verify the origin before you buy.
