Polyethylene glycol 3350 (the active ingredient in MiraLAX) is generally safe for dogs when used at appropriate doses under veterinary guidance. It’s an osmotic laxative that works by drawing water into the colon to soften stool, and veterinarians commonly recommend it for constipation in dogs. That said, its use in dogs is considered “off label,” meaning the FDA has not formally approved it for veterinary use, so getting the dose and duration right matters.

How PEG 3350 Works in Dogs

PEG 3350 is a large, inert molecule that your dog’s intestines barely absorb. When it reaches the colon, it pulls water in through osmosis, softening hard stool and making it easier to pass. Unlike stimulant laxatives that force the intestinal muscles to contract, PEG simply changes the water balance in the gut. This makes it one of the gentler options for relieving constipation.

Veterinarians classify it alongside other osmotic laxatives like lactulose and magnesium-based products. PEG tends to be well tolerated because it doesn’t get absorbed into the bloodstream in meaningful amounts, which limits the potential for systemic side effects.

Typical Dosage for Dogs

Dosing depends on your dog’s size. A common guideline is 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon mixed into wet food twice daily for dogs under 30 pounds. Larger dogs over 55 pounds typically get 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon twice daily. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists a range of 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon given orally or in food every 12 hours, adjusted until stools reach a soft consistency.

The powder is tasteless and odorless, which helps with compliance. Many dogs will eat it without fuss when it’s stirred into wet food. If your dog is a picky eater, mixing PEG into chicken broth can improve acceptance. Veterinary clinics report that many dogs will voluntarily drink PEG dissolved in broth even at higher volumes used for colonoscopy preparation.

Always start at the low end of the dosing range. The goal is soft, formed stool, not diarrhea. If the stool becomes watery, the dose is too high and should be reduced.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects are mild and self-limiting: loose stool, bloating, and occasional nausea. Some dogs may vomit, though this seems more common at higher doses used in clinical settings rather than the small amounts given for everyday constipation. In a study of 46 dogs receiving large prep doses via feeding tube, regurgitation occurred in 25 to 52 percent of cases depending on what anti-nausea medication was used beforehand. At normal laxative doses mixed into food, vomiting is far less frequent.

Diarrhea is a sign the dose needs to come down, not necessarily that the medication is harmful. If you reduce the amount and the diarrhea resolves, you’ve simply overshot the effective dose.

The more serious concern with prolonged use is electrolyte imbalance. Because PEG draws water into the colon, it can shift the balance of sodium and potassium in the body over time. One documented case involved fatal low sodium levels, though that occurred during a high-volume bowel preparation for a colonoscopy, not during standard laxative use. Mild, non-clinical elevations in potassium have also been observed in animals on PEG. For dogs using PEG regularly over weeks, periodic blood work to check electrolytes and hydration status is a reasonable precaution, especially in older dogs or those with other health issues.

When PEG Should Not Be Used

PEG is contraindicated in dogs with known or suspected bowel obstruction, a perforated bowel, or active inflammatory bowel disease. If your dog is straining but hasn’t passed stool in several days, is vomiting repeatedly, has a distended abdomen, or seems to be in significant pain, the problem may be an obstruction rather than simple constipation. Giving a laxative to a dog with a blockage can make things worse.

Dogs with kidney disease need extra caution. Impaired kidneys have a harder time managing the fluid and electrolyte shifts that PEG causes. If your dog has been diagnosed with chronic kidney issues, the risks of unsupervised PEG use go up considerably.

Watch Out for Toxic Additives

Plain, unflavored PEG 3350 powder (sold as MiraLAX or store-brand equivalents) is what veterinarians recommend. The danger comes from flavored or sugar-free versions of laxative products that may contain xylitol, a sugar alcohol that is extremely toxic to dogs. Xylitol can cause a rapid, dangerous drop in blood sugar and liver failure in dogs, even in small amounts.

The FDA warns that xylitol shows up in a wide range of over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements, chewable vitamins, and sugar-free products. Before giving your dog any human product, check the full ingredient list. If xylitol (sometimes listed as “birch sugar”) appears anywhere on the label, do not use it. Stick to the plain, unflavored powder with PEG 3350 as the only active ingredient.

How to Use PEG Safely at Home

If your vet has recommended PEG for your dog’s constipation, here’s what a practical routine looks like:

  • Mix with wet food. Stir the measured dose into a small portion of canned food or broth to ensure your dog consumes the full amount.
  • Keep water available. PEG works by pulling water into the colon, so your dog needs to stay well hydrated. Make sure fresh water is always accessible.
  • Start low. Begin with the smallest dose for your dog’s weight range. Increase only if there’s no improvement after 24 to 48 hours.
  • Adjust based on stool. The target is soft, formed stool. If it turns watery, cut the dose back. If there’s no change after a couple of days, contact your vet before increasing further.
  • Don’t use long-term without monitoring. Short courses of a few days are low risk. If your dog needs PEG for more than a week or two, blood work to check electrolytes is worth discussing with your vet.

PEG typically produces results within one to three days. If your dog hasn’t had a bowel movement after 48 to 72 hours on an appropriate dose, the constipation may have a cause that a simple laxative won’t fix, such as a dietary issue, dehydration, or an underlying condition that needs a different approach.
