Propel water is sugar-free, but it’s surprisingly acidic, with a pH between 3.4 and 3.6. That puts it in the same range as soda and orange juice, well below the 5.5 pH threshold where tooth enamel starts to dissolve. So while Propel won’t cause cavities the way sugary drinks do, it can erode your enamel over time, especially if you sip it throughout the day.

Propel’s ingredient list starts with water, but the second ingredient is citric acid. Citric acid gives the drink its tart, refreshing taste, and it’s also a chelating agent, meaning it binds to calcium and pulls it away from surfaces. A study published in the British Dental Journal found that flavored waters with pH values between 2.74 and 3.34 dissolved tooth mineral at rates equal to or greater than pure orange juice, a well-established erosive drink. When extracted teeth were exposed to these flavored waters, their surfaces showed changes consistent with erosive dissolution. The researchers concluded that flavored waters should be treated as acidic drinks, not as water with flavoring.
The Good News: No Cavity Risk
Propel uses two artificial sweeteners: sucralose and acesulfame potassium. Neither one feeds the bacteria in your mouth. Cavity-causing bacteria thrive on fermentable sugars, breaking them down into acid that eats into enamel. But these sweeteners can’t be fermented by oral bacteria at all. Sucralose has been specifically tested and confirmed to be non-cavity-causing. So from a bacterial standpoint, Propel is genuinely better for your teeth than juice, soda, or sports drinks that contain sugar.
The distinction matters. Cavities and erosion are two different problems. Cavities are holes created by bacterial acid in specific spots, usually between teeth or in grooves. Erosion is a broader loss of enamel across the tooth surface caused by direct acid exposure from food and drinks. Propel carries erosion risk but not cavity risk.
Sipping Habits Matter More Than Amount
Your saliva is remarkably good at neutralizing acid and re-depositing minerals back onto your teeth. After you drink something acidic, your mouth typically needs 20 to 30 minutes to return to a safe pH. If you drink a bottle of Propel in a few minutes, your saliva handles it relatively well. The problem starts when you nurse a bottle over several hours, because every sip resets the clock on that recovery period.
Research on athletes confirms that the frequency of acidic drink consumption matters more for dental erosion than the total amount consumed. People who sip frequently, breathe through their mouths during exercise (which dries out saliva), or have naturally low saliva flow are at the highest risk. If you’re carrying a Propel bottle on a long run or keeping one at your desk all morning, your teeth spend far more cumulative time in an acidic environment than if you drank the same amount quickly.
How to Protect Your Teeth
You don’t necessarily need to give up Propel, but a few habits can significantly reduce its impact on your enamel:
- Drink it in one sitting rather than sipping over hours. This gives your saliva time to recover and remineralize your teeth between exposures.
- Use a straw to direct the liquid past your teeth and toward the back of your mouth.
- Rinse with plain water afterward. A quick swish helps dilute the acid clinging to your enamel.
- Wait before brushing. Brushing immediately after an acidic drink can scrub away softened enamel. Give your teeth at least 30 minutes to reharden before you pick up a toothbrush.
If you’re drinking Propel purely for hydration rather than during intense exercise, plain water is a simpler choice that carries zero erosion risk. For workouts where you actually need electrolyte replacement, the trade-off is more reasonable, just be mindful of how you drink it.
How Propel Compares to Other Drinks
Propel sits in an awkward middle ground. It’s better than soda or juice for your teeth because it doesn’t fuel cavity-causing bacteria. But its acidity is nearly identical to those drinks, so the erosion risk is comparable. Plain water (pH around 7.0) and milk (pH around 6.7) are both far gentler. Plain sparkling water without added flavoring typically has a pH around 4.5 to 5.0, which is mildly acidic but still significantly less erosive than Propel’s 3.4 to 3.6 range.
