The expectorant loosens mucus in your airways by increasing fluid in the respiratory tract and relaxing the muscles around your bronchial tubes, making it easier to cough up phlegm when you do cough.
Neither of these ingredients is a sedating antihistamine. That’s the key distinction. Sedating antihistamines are what make you drowsy, and they’re the defining ingredient in most “nighttime” or “PM” formulas.
How It Differs From Nighttime Formulas
Robitussin’s nighttime products, like Robitussin Nighttime Cough DM, add an antihistamine such as doxylamine or chlorpheniramine on top of the cough suppressant. These antihistamines block histamine (which causes allergy-type symptoms) but also have a strong drying and sedating effect. That sedation is intentional: it helps you sleep through coughing fits at night.
Regular Robitussin DM skips the antihistamine entirely. This means it controls your cough and loosens chest congestion without pushing you toward sleep. Can It Still Make You Drowsy?

Choosing the Right Formula for Your Symptoms

If nighttime coughing is keeping you awake, a nighttime formula with an added antihistamine may help you sleep through it. Some people use regular Robitussin DM during the day and switch to a nighttime version at bedtime. If you do this, check that you’re not doubling up on dextromethorphan or exceeding the maximum number of doses across both products in 24 hours.
