Roundup is not safe for dogs during and immediately after application. The active ingredient, glyphosate, has relatively low toxicity to mammals on its own, but the full Roundup formula contains surfactants that are significantly more toxic and can cause serious gastrointestinal and respiratory problems if a dog ingests or inhales them. Most veterinary guidance recommends keeping dogs off treated areas for at least 48 hours.
Why the Full Formula Matters More Than Glyphosate Alone
Glyphosate kills plants by disrupting a biological pathway that mammals don’t have, which is why it’s often described as having low toxicity to people and pets. But Roundup isn’t just glyphosate. It contains a surfactant called polyethoxylated tallow amine (POEA) that helps the herbicide stick to and penetrate plant leaves. POEA is roughly four to five times more toxic than glyphosate when ingested orally, based on lethal dose comparisons in rats. It also potentiates lung toxicity, meaning it makes glyphosate more damaging to respiratory tissue than glyphosate would be on its own.
In animal studies, when Roundup was delivered directly to lung tissue, it caused 80% to 100% mortality at very small doses. POEA alone caused similar but slightly less severe effects. This matters because dogs sniffing freshly sprayed grass can inhale droplets or residue, and dogs that walk through treated areas will lick their paws.
Symptoms of Roundup Exposure in Dogs
The most common signs of glyphosate product poisoning in dogs are vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. In a review of clinical cases, vomiting was reported in 65 dogs, diarrhea in 47, and lethargy in 30. These are the hallmarks of gastrointestinal irritation and tend to appear within a few hours of exposure.
More serious but less common effects include respiratory distress and fluid buildup in the lungs (pulmonary edema), which was reported in five dogs across the cases studied. Depression and irritation of the mouth and digestive tract lining are also documented. Most dogs recover with supportive care, but the severity depends on how much they ingested and whether the product contained POEA or similar surfactants.
How Dogs Get Exposed
The most likely exposure route is oral. Dogs walk across treated lawns, then lick their paws or fur. They may also eat grass directly, drink from puddles where herbicide has collected, or chew on a container. Skin contact is a lower risk for systemic poisoning but can cause local irritation. Inhalation is a concern primarily during or right after spraying, when fine droplets are still airborne.
Puppies and small breeds face higher risk simply because a smaller body weight means any given amount of chemical produces a proportionally larger dose. Dogs that are enthusiastic grass-eaters or puddle-drinkers are also at greater risk.
How Long Roundup Stays Active
Glyphosate breaks down faster on plant surfaces than in soil. On foliage, biodegradation is relatively quick, but in soil the average half-life is about 60 days. The practical concern for dog owners is the drying period: wet herbicide on grass blades is far more likely to transfer to fur and paws than dried residue.
The standard recommendation is to keep pets off treated areas for at least 48 hours after application and to wait until the spray is completely dry at a minimum. “Completely dry” means no visible moisture on leaves, which typically takes a few hours in warm, sunny conditions but longer on cool or humid days. The 48-hour window provides a larger safety margin, especially since dogs are in close physical contact with grass.
Does Roundup Cause Cancer in Dogs?
This is a reasonable concern, given the ongoing debate about glyphosate and cancer in humans. A 2025 study in Golden Retrievers looked specifically at whether glyphosate exposure was linked to canine multicentric lymphoma, the most common blood cancer in dogs. Researchers measured glyphosate levels in the urine of 30 dogs with lymphoma and 30 matched healthy controls. Every single dog, sick or healthy, had detectable glyphosate in their urine, reflecting how widespread the chemical is in the environment.
The key finding: there was no significant difference in glyphosate levels between dogs with lymphoma and dogs without it, either in the year before diagnosis or at the time of diagnosis. The researchers also calculated whether any dogs reached estimated blood concentrations high enough to damage DNA in lab tests. None of the 60 dogs reached that threshold for glyphosate at any point. So while glyphosate can damage canine cells at certain concentrations in a lab setting, real-world exposure levels in this study did not appear to reach those levels or correlate with cancer risk.
This doesn’t close the question entirely, but it’s the most direct evidence available on dogs specifically.
What to Do if Your Dog Is Exposed
If your dog has walked through a freshly treated area, wash their paws and any affected fur with soap and water to remove residue. If you suspect your dog drank or ate a significant amount of a glyphosate product, contact your veterinarian or call the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline at 888-426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661. Have the product label available so you can provide the brand name and ingredient list.
Do not try to make your dog vomit without veterinary guidance. Inducing vomiting is sometimes the wrong call depending on the product and the situation, and Cornell University’s veterinary school specifically warns against it without professional direction. For most mild exposures, washing the chemical off and monitoring for vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual lethargy is appropriate. If symptoms appear or worsen, get to a vet.
Pet-Safer Alternatives
If you want to avoid the risk entirely, several herbicide options skip glyphosate and synthetic surfactants. Vinegar-based weed killers use acetic acid, sometimes combined with salt, to burn down weeds on contact. These are non-selective (they kill any plant they touch, just like Roundup) and generally break down quickly in the environment. They work best on young, small weeds and often require repeated applications for established ones.
Other approaches include boiling water poured directly on weeds, manual pulling, corn gluten meal as a pre-emergent (it prevents seeds from sprouting), and simply allowing clover or other ground covers to outcompete weeds. None of these match glyphosate’s effectiveness on tough perennial weeds, but for a yard shared with dogs, reducing chemical exposure may be worth the tradeoff in weed control.
