Skateboarding won’t match the sustained, steady-state cardio of a 45-minute run or a long bike ride. Running at 6 mph scores around 10 METs, nearly double skateboarding’s 6.0. If your goal is maximizing calories burned per minute or training for endurance events, running and cycling are more efficient tools.

But skateboarding has a major advantage over those activities: people actually want to do it. The variable nature of trick attempts creates a psychological reward loop. You never know how many tries it’ll take to land something, which keeps you pushing for “just one more.” That built-in motivation means skaters routinely spend two or three hours at a park without it feeling like exercise. A runner who dreads every minute of a 30-minute jog burns fewer weekly calories than a skater who happily skates for two hours, four days a week.

Fractures were the most common type, and the upper limbs took the worst of it: wrist and hand injuries made up nearly two-thirds of all upper limb cases. Ankle injuries were the most common lower limb problem.

Head injuries accounted for a smaller but more serious portion, with concussions making up about 62% of head injury cases. The typical injured skater in this data set was young (average age 19), and patients over 30 made up only 14% of cases. That likely reflects who skates most, not who’s most vulnerable.

Wearing a helmet and wrist guards dramatically reduces your risk of the two most consequential injury types. If you’re picking up skateboarding specifically for fitness, starting with cruising and basic carving rather than trick attempts keeps the injury profile closer to cycling or rollerblading. As your comfort level grows, you can gradually take on more challenging terrain.

Making Skateboarding Work as Cardio

If you want skateboarding to function as real cardiovascular exercise, the key is minimizing downtime. Cruising through your neighborhood for 30 to 45 minutes without stopping gives you steady moderate-intensity cardio similar to a brisk bike ride. At a skatepark, focus on continuous flow rather than standing around between attempts. Pumping through bowls and transition keeps your heart rate elevated more consistently than flatground trick practice, where you might spend a lot of time picking up your board.

For the best cardio benefit, aim for sessions of at least 30 minutes where you’re actively moving for most of that time. Three to five sessions per week puts you well within the CDC’s aerobic activity guidelines. Pair it with some basic strength training and you have a complete fitness routine built around something you genuinely look forward to doing.
