Slugging is generally not a good idea if you have active acne. Coating your face in a thick layer of petrolatum (the core of slugging) can trap excess oil and bacteria against your skin, potentially making breakouts worse. But the relationship between slugging and acne is more nuanced than a simple “never do it.” In certain situations, a modified version of slugging can actually support acne-prone skin.
What Slugging Does to Your Skin
Slugging involves applying a thick layer of petroleum jelly as the final step in your nighttime skincare routine. The petrolatum acts as a physical seal over your skin, dramatically reducing the amount of moisture that evaporates overnight. In clinical measurements, applying Vaseline decreased transepidermal water loss from about 11.3 to 7.4 grams per square meter per hour, roughly a 35% reduction. That trapped moisture helps the outer layer of skin repair itself, stimulates the production of natural lipids between skin cells, and leaves your face noticeably softer by morning.
For dry or damaged skin, this is genuinely helpful. The problem is that acne-prone skin has different needs.
Why Slugging Can Worsen Breakouts
Skin that’s already oily has an adequate, sometimes excessive, lipid layer on its surface. Adding a heavy occlusive on top doesn’t address what’s driving the breakouts. Instead, it creates conditions where oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria sit pressed against your pores all night.
The American Academy of Dermatology specifically advises against putting petroleum jelly on your face if you’re acne-prone, noting it may cause breakouts in some people. Cleveland Clinic dermatologists are more blunt: slugging could actually make your acne worse, not better. Your skin is a living organ that constantly sheds dead cells and releases oils, and those need to slough off freely. A thick occlusive barrier can interfere with that process.
There’s an important distinction to make here, though. The idea that petrolatum itself clogs pores is surprisingly poorly supported. A comprehensive review published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that several studies claiming petrolatum is comedogenic provided no references to back the claim. Early research did show mild comedogenicity when petrolatum was applied under continuous occlusion for six weeks, but a follow-up study by the same researchers actually reported improvement in acne papules with petrolatum use. So the issue isn’t necessarily that petroleum jelly is pore-clogging by nature. It’s that sealing in whatever is already on oily, breakout-prone skin creates a problematic environment.
Fungal Acne Is a Bigger Concern
If what you’re dealing with is fungal acne (technically called Malassezia folliculitis), slugging is especially risky. This type of breakout, which looks like clusters of small, uniform bumps often on the forehead, chest, or back, results from an overgrowth of yeast that naturally lives on your skin. That overgrowth happens more readily when follicles are occluded. Hot, humid conditions, excessive sweating, and occlusive topical products all promote flares.
Sealing your skin under petroleum jelly overnight creates exactly the warm, moist, low-oxygen environment this yeast thrives in. If your breakouts are fungal rather than bacterial, slugging is one of the worst things you can do.
When Slugging Might Help Acne-Prone Skin
Here’s where things get interesting. Many common acne treatments actively damage the skin barrier. Benzoyl peroxide increases water loss from the skin and disrupts its natural microbial balance. Retinoids suppress oil production and speed up skin cell turnover, but the tradeoff is thinner skin, dryness, and flaking. These are all signs of barrier damage, and a compromised barrier can actually make acne harder to treat and more likely to recur.
Research published in Medical Science Monitor emphasizes that repairing the skin barrier is crucial for improving the effectiveness of acne treatment, preventing recurrence, and reducing the secondary sensitivity that many people develop from their acne medications. If your face is peeling, tight, and irritated from a retinoid or benzoyl peroxide, some form of occlusive support can help your barrier recover and allow you to tolerate your treatment long-term.
The key is being strategic about it. Rather than slathering your entire face, you can apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly only to the driest, most irritated patches (often the cheeks or around the nose) while avoiding your breakout zones. Some dermatologists call this “selective slugging,” and it lets you protect damaged areas without sealing oil-producing zones.
Better Alternatives for Acne-Prone Skin
If your goal is barrier repair without the risks of full-face slugging, lighter options exist. Water-based or silicone-based moisturizers provide hydration without heavy occlusion. Oil-free formulas hydrate without adding shine or trapping sebum. Products containing ceramides are particularly useful because they replenish the natural lipid components of your skin barrier and stabilize its structure, addressing the same underlying problem that slugging targets but without the occlusive seal.
Squalane is another ingredient worth looking for. It’s a lightweight oil that mimics your skin’s natural sebum composition, so it absorbs cleanly without sitting on the surface. Moisturizers built around squalane and ceramides can deliver meaningful barrier support while remaining compatible with breakout-prone skin.
If you’re determined to try slugging despite having occasional breakouts, a few precautions make it safer. Cleanse thoroughly first so you’re not sealing in dirt or excess oil. Avoid layering active ingredients like chemical exfoliants or retinoids underneath the petroleum jelly, since the occlusive layer traps those actives against your skin and intensifies irritation. Start with a very thin layer rather than the thick coat you see in online tutorials, and limit it to two or three nights per week to see how your skin responds.
