Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) isn’t dangerous, but it is one of the harsher cleansing agents used in shampoos. It strips oils aggressively, can damage the outer protective layer of each hair strand, and disrupts the skin barrier on your scalp. Whether that matters depends on your hair type, how often you wash, and how sensitive your skin is.
What SLS Actually Does to Hair
SLS is a surfactant, meaning its job is to grab onto oil and dirt so water can rinse them away. It does this very well, which is exactly the problem. The molecule is small enough to penetrate the hair cuticle, the shingle-like outer layer that protects each strand. When SLS gets underneath those shingles, it causes the hair shaft to swell and forces additional cuticle layers open. Over time, this leads to rougher texture, increased breakage, and faster color fading in dyed hair.
For people with thick, oily hair who wash a few times a week, this level of cleansing power may be perfectly fine. But if your hair is fine, dry, curly, color-treated, or chemically processed, repeated exposure to SLS accelerates the kind of damage you’re already prone to.
How SLS Affects Your Scalp
The scalp side of the equation matters just as much. SLS disrupts the lipid barrier that keeps your skin hydrated, a measurable effect that researchers track through something called transepidermal water loss (essentially how fast moisture escapes through the skin). In a study of 35 healthy subjects, a single application of SLS increased moisture loss from the skin for two to five days afterward, with significant variation from person to person. Some people’s skin recovered quickly; others took nearly a week.
At concentrations of 2% and higher, SLS causes measurable irritation in patch testing, and irritation increases as the concentration goes up. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel, which evaluates ingredient safety for the cosmetics industry, considers SLS safe in rinse-off products like shampoo because contact time is brief. But for anything that stays on the skin, they recommend concentrations below 1%. This distinction is important: SLS in a shampoo you rinse out in 60 seconds is a very different exposure than SLS in a leave-in product.
If you notice scalp itching, flaking, or tightness after washing, SLS could be the culprit. People with eczema, psoriasis, or generally sensitive skin are more likely to react.
SLS vs. SLES: A Common Confusion
Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) sounds almost identical but behaves differently. SLES is essentially SLS that has been chemically modified through a process called ethoxylation, which makes the molecule larger. That larger size means SLES doesn’t penetrate the skin as easily, disrupts the natural lipid barrier less, and causes less protein damage to both skin and hair. Most mainstream “gentle” shampoos have quietly swapped SLS for SLES for this reason.
SLES still foams well and cleans effectively, so if you want a conventional-feeling shampoo that’s less harsh, checking for SLES instead of SLS on the label is a simple first step. It’s not irritation-free, but it’s a meaningful step down in aggressiveness.
Does SLS Cause Hair Loss?
This is the claim that circulates most widely online, and the evidence is thin. SLS can damage hair strands, making them weaker and more prone to snapping. That breakage can look like hair loss, especially around the hairline or where hair is already fragile. But there is no strong clinical evidence that SLS penetrates deeply enough to damage hair follicles or trigger the kind of follicle miniaturization seen in pattern baldness.
If you’re noticing more hair in your drain, SLS could be contributing to breakage, but it’s unlikely to be the root cause of actual hair thinning. Hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, stress, and genetics are far more common drivers of true hair loss.
Gentler Alternatives to Look For
If you want to move away from SLS entirely, look for shampoos built around glucoside-based surfactants. These are plant-derived, non-ionic cleansers that are significantly milder. The most common ones you’ll see on ingredient labels include coco glucoside, decyl glucoside, and lauryl glucoside. Cocamidopropyl betaine is another mild option frequently used in “sulfate-free” formulas.
These alternatives clean effectively but produce less foam, which can feel like they’re not working as well. Foam is not actually a measure of cleaning power. Decyl glucoside in particular creates a rich, dense lather that feels closest to a traditional shampoo experience. Coco glucoside foams reasonably well too. Some options like sucrose cocoate produce very little lasting foam and work better in cream-based formulas.
The trade-off is that gentler surfactants may not cut through heavy product buildup or very oily scalps as efficiently. Some people find that alternating between a sulfate-free shampoo for regular use and an SLS-based clarifying shampoo once or twice a month gives them the best of both worlds.
How to Spot SLS on a Label
SLS appears under several names on ingredient lists. The most common are sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and lauryl sulfate sodium salt. You might also see brand-specific trade names, but in most consumer shampoos sold in the US and EU, the INCI name “sodium lauryl sulfate” is what you’ll find. Don’t confuse it with “sodium laureth sulfate” or “sodium lauryl ether sulfate,” both of which refer to the gentler SLES.
SLS often shows up in the first five ingredients, which means it’s present at a relatively high concentration. If it appears further down the list, the amount is lower and less likely to cause issues.
