Sparkling Ice is a zero-calorie flavored sparkling water, which makes it look like a weight loss winner on paper. But the picture is more complicated than the nutrition label suggests. The drink’s sweetener, carbonation, and your overall eating habits all influence whether it helps or hinders your goals.

What’s Actually in Sparkling Ice

Sparkling Ice contains carbonated water, natural flavors, artificial colors, and sucralose (the same compound sold as Splenda). Sucralose is roughly 600 times sweeter than sugar, and because about 85% of it passes through the body undigested, the drink clocks in at zero calories per bottle. On a pure calorie-counting basis, swapping a regular soda or juice for Sparkling Ice eliminates a significant chunk of daily sugar intake. A single can of regular cola has around 140 calories and 39 grams of sugar, so the trade looks favorable.

That said, zero calories doesn’t automatically mean “good for weight loss.” The ingredients interact with your metabolism and appetite in ways that go beyond the number on the label.

How Sucralose Affects Your Metabolism

Sucralose on its own doesn’t raise blood sugar. But a 2020 study published in Cell Metabolism found something important: when people consumed sucralose-sweetened drinks alongside carbohydrates (food, essentially) for just 10 days, their insulin sensitivity decreased compared to people who had the same carbs with plain water or sugar. The effect was specific to the combination of sucralose plus carbs. People who drank sucralose beverages without eating carbohydrates at the same time didn’t show the same insulin spike. In practice, though, most people drink Sparkling Ice with meals or snacks, which means the combination scenario is the realistic one. The study was small and short-term, but the insulin changes were statistically significant, and the researchers actually stopped a parallel trial in adolescents early because two participants in the sucralose-plus-carbs group developed highly elevated insulin levels.

Carbonation and Hunger

The bubbles in Sparkling Ice may also work against weight loss. A 2017 study found that carbonated beverages increase levels of ghrelin, the hormone that tells your brain you’re hungry. Rats that drank carbonated beverages over the course of a year gained weight faster than rats drinking flat versions of the same beverage or plain water. The researchers confirmed the ghrelin effect in humans too: 20 healthy men showed higher ghrelin levels after drinking carbonated beverages compared to flat alternatives.

This doesn’t mean a single Sparkling Ice will send you to the fridge. But if you’re drinking several bottles a day, the cumulative effect on hunger signaling could make it harder to stick to your calorie goals. You might find yourself snacking more without connecting it to what you drank.

Diet Drinks vs. Water for Weight Loss

The most direct comparison comes from a year-long randomized controlled trial published in Nature. Participants who had already completed a weight management program were split into two groups: one drank non-nutritive sweetened beverages (like Sparkling Ice), and the other drank water. After 52 weeks, the water group maintained a loss of 6.1 kg, while the diet beverage group maintained 7.5 kg. The diet drink group did slightly better statistically, but the researchers noted the difference wasn’t clinically significant, meaning it was too small to matter in real-world terms.

This suggests that diet beverages don’t sabotage weight loss in a dramatic way, at least over one year. But they also don’t provide a meaningful advantage over plain water. If you enjoy Sparkling Ice and it keeps you from reaching for sugary drinks, it serves a useful role. If you’re drinking it because you think it actively promotes weight loss, the evidence doesn’t support that.

The WHO’s Position on Artificial Sweeteners

In 2023, the World Health Organization released a guideline advising against using non-sugar sweeteners for weight control. Their systematic review concluded that replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners “does not help with weight control in the long term” and does not reduce body fat in adults or children. The review also flagged potential risks from long-term use, including a higher likelihood of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, though the WHO acknowledged these associations could be influenced by the habits and health profiles of people who tend to use artificial sweeteners in the first place.

The guideline applies to all artificial sweeteners, including sucralose. The one exception: people who already have diabetes, for whom reducing sugar intake with sweetener substitutes may still make sense.

Effects on Your Teeth

Weight loss aside, it’s worth knowing that Sparkling Ice is acidic. Flavored sparkling waters typically have a pH around 4.0, well below the 5.5 threshold where tooth enamel starts to soften. Lab testing found that flavored sparkling water caused less enamel damage than energy drinks or kombucha, but it’s still meaningfully more erosive than plain water. If you’re sipping Sparkling Ice throughout the day, the repeated acid exposure can weaken enamel over time. Drinking it with meals rather than between them, and rinsing with plain water afterward, reduces the risk.

The Practical Takeaway

Sparkling Ice is not a weight loss tool. It’s a zero-calorie drink that can replace higher-calorie options, and that substitution alone can create a calorie deficit. But the sucralose may blunt your insulin sensitivity when paired with food, the carbonation may subtly increase your appetite, and the long-term evidence shows no body fat reduction from using artificial sweeteners. If you genuinely prefer it over sugary drinks and it helps you avoid liquid calories, it can play a supporting role. Plain or unflavored sparkling water does the same job without the metabolic trade-offs.
