Is Splooting a Sign of Hip Dysplasia in Dogs?

Splooting by itself is not a sign of hip dysplasia. Most dogs and cats that sploot are simply stretching or cooling off, and the position is completely normal, especially in young, flexible animals. However, if splooting is new, one-sided, or accompanied by other changes in movement, it can sometimes point to joint discomfort worth investigating.

Why Healthy Animals Sploot

Splooting is one of the most common resting positions in dogs and cats. In a full sploot, both hind legs stretch straight out behind the body. In a half sploot, one leg extends back while the other tucks underneath. A side sploot sends one leg out to the side. All three are normal variations.

The two main reasons healthy animals sploot are temperature regulation and stretching. On a warm day, a dog or cat will press its belly against cool tile or shaded grass to bring its body temperature down. The position also gives the hips, spine, and back legs a deep stretch, similar to the sphinx pose in yoga. Short-legged breeds like corgis and Chihuahuas are famous full-splooters, while larger dogs tend to prefer the half sploot because their longer limbs make the full version less comfortable.

If your pet has splooted happily since puppyhood or kittenhood with no stiffness, limping, or reluctance to move afterward, the position almost certainly reflects good flexibility rather than a problem.

When Splooting Could Signal a Problem

Context matters more than the position itself. A few patterns are worth paying attention to:

  • New onset in an adult dog. A dog that never splooted before and suddenly starts may be shifting into the position to relieve pressure on a sore joint.
  • Consistent one-sidedness. Always extending the same leg while tucking the other can indicate discomfort in the extended hip (taking weight off it) or stiffness in the tucked one.
  • Difficulty getting up afterward. If your dog sploots and then struggles to stand, walks stiffly for the first few steps, or yelps, the stretch may be aggravating an underlying issue.
  • Accompanying gait changes. Bunny-hopping (both back legs moving together when running), swaying hips, or visible lameness alongside frequent splooting raises the concern level significantly.

A dog that holds a limb in a flexed or guarded position, whether sitting, standing, or lying down, is often responding to pain in or around that limb. The same applies to “frog sitting,” where a dog sits with both knees splayed outward instead of tucked neatly underneath. These postural shifts are the body’s way of redistributing weight away from something that hurts.

What Hip Dysplasia Actually Looks Like

Hip dysplasia is a developmental disorder where the ball-and-socket joint of the hip fits together too loosely. The connective tissue that holds the joint capsule tight has an abnormal composition, allowing the top of the thigh bone to slide around more than it should. Over time, that excess movement grinds down cartilage and reshapes the bone surfaces, eventually leading to arthritis.

The clinical signs are more obvious than splooting alone. Dogs with hip dysplasia typically show lameness in one or both back legs, a reluctance to exercise or jump, abnormal gaits like bunny-hopping or a swaying walk, and muscle loss in the hindquarters. You might also notice that the shoulder muscles look unusually bulky, because the dog has been compensating by putting more weight on the front end. Many affected dogs have trouble with stairs, resist getting into cars, or seem stiff after rest.

Overall prevalence across all breeds sits around 15.6%, but the range is dramatic. Bulldogs have the highest rate at nearly 78%, while Italian greyhounds sit at essentially zero. Breeds in the molossoid and mountain dog families (think mastiffs, Bernese mountain dogs, Saint Bernards) run about 20% prevalence as a group. Sighthounds like greyhounds and whippets are the least affected at around 5%.

How Vets Diagnose Hip Dysplasia

No one can diagnose hip dysplasia just by watching your dog sit or lie down. Diagnosis starts with a physical exam where the vet manipulates the hip joint. One key test involves rotating the thigh bone outward and listening for a pop or click as it slips back into the socket. That sound, called a positive Ortolani sign, indicates the joint is looser than it should be.

Confirmation requires X-rays. Two major screening programs exist. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) uses a standard hip X-ray that three veterinary radiologists independently grade on a seven-point scale from “excellent” down to “severely dysplastic.” The University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program (PennHIP) takes a different approach, using a special positioning device while the dog is sedated to measure exactly how far the thigh bone can be pulled from the socket. That measurement produces a distraction index: a score near zero means a tight, well-fitting joint, while a score approaching one means severe laxity.

If your dog’s splooting has you worried, a vet visit with a hands-on orthopedic exam is the logical first step. X-rays are only needed if the physical exam or your dog’s symptoms suggest something is off.

Breeds That Deserve Extra Attention

If you own a breed with high hip dysplasia rates, it makes sense to watch splooting and other postural habits a little more carefully. Bulldogs, pugs, mastiffs, rottweilers, German shepherds, golden retrievers, and Saint Bernards all carry elevated risk. Mixed breeds actually have a higher average prevalence (21.5%) than most purebred groups, likely because crossbreeding doesn’t eliminate the genetic factors involved.

For these dogs, splooting that changes in frequency, becomes one-sided, or appears alongside any stiffness or reluctance to move warrants a closer look. In lower-risk breeds, especially naturally flexible ones like corgis, the same splooting is far less likely to mean anything medical.

Supporting Hip Health

Whether your dog has been diagnosed with hip dysplasia or you simply want to protect their joints, weight management is the single most effective thing you can do. For dogs that already have arthritis, losing excess weight alone often provides significant pain relief. Keeping your dog lean throughout life slows both the onset and progression of joint disease.

Fish oil is the supplement with the strongest research behind it for joint health. Cornell’s veterinary college recommends one teaspoon per 20 pounds of body weight daily. Glucosamine and chondroitin may help slow cartilage breakdown, though the evidence is less definitive. Green-lipped mussel extract has also shown benefits at a dose of 77 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day. Look for products carrying the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) seal, which indicates quality testing.

Some veterinary experts suggest starting joint supplements around age one, when growth is complete. Others base the decision on the individual dog’s activity level, breed risk, and whether early signs of joint wear are already visible. For dogs with confirmed hip dysplasia, the gold standard treatment is hip replacement surgery. When surgery isn’t an option, management combines weight control, controlled exercise, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications to keep the dog comfortable and mobile.
