Is Sugar Bad for Cats? Risks, Diabetes, and More

Sugar is not toxic to cats the way chocolate or onions are, but it offers them absolutely nothing beneficial and can cause real problems over time. Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their bodies evolved to run on animal protein and fat, not carbohydrates. They lack key biological tools for handling sugar, from the taste buds to detect it to the liver enzymes to process it efficiently.

Why Cats Can’t Even Taste Sugar

Cats are one of the few mammals that cannot detect sweetness at all. The gene responsible for building the sweet taste receptor (called Tas1r2) is broken in domestic cats. It exists in their DNA, but it’s been permanently switched off through a mutation that occurred far back in their evolutionary history. Research published in PNAS confirmed that cats with this defective gene “do not prefer sweet carbohydrates and noncaloric sweeteners and probably cannot detect them.”

This matters because it tells you something fundamental about what cats are designed to eat. As a species drifted further toward a meat-only diet over millions of years, the ability to taste sweetness became irrelevant. The gene degraded because there was no survival advantage in keeping it. So when your cat licks frosting off a cupcake, it’s responding to the fat content or the texture, not the sugar.

How Cats Process Sugar Differently

Beyond taste, cats are metabolically ill-equipped to handle sugar. In humans and dogs, the liver produces an enzyme called glucokinase that acts as a gatekeeper for processing glucose. It helps the body efficiently regulate blood sugar after a carbohydrate-heavy meal. Cats lack this enzyme pathway entirely. Their livers simply aren’t built to manage large surges of glucose the way omnivores’ livers are.

This isn’t a deficiency or a disease. It’s the normal state for a carnivore. Cats evolved to get their energy from protein and to convert amino acids into glucose slowly and steadily, rather than absorbing big doses of sugar from their food. When sugar enters a cat’s system, the body has to work around the missing machinery, which means blood glucose and insulin levels can spike in ways that aren’t well regulated.

Sugar, Weight Gain, and Diabetes Risk

The most concrete health risk of sugar for cats is its contribution to obesity and insulin resistance. A study published in the journal Nutrition Research compared cats fed a high-glycemic rice-based diet to those fed a lower-glycemic sorghum and corn-based diet. The cats on the rice-based diet consumed more calories, gained more weight, and showed higher blood glucose and insulin levels after meals. The lower-glycemic diet, by contrast, led to reduced calorie intake and less weight gain.

The mechanism is similar to what happens in humans. Foods that cause a rapid spike in blood sugar also cause a rapid spike in insulin, followed by a crash that triggers hunger again sooner. Over time, this cycle promotes overeating. For indoor cats that already have limited activity levels, the added calories from sugary or high-glycemic foods tip the scales toward obesity faster than many owners realize. And feline obesity is directly linked to type 2 diabetes, a condition that is increasingly common in pet cats and can require twice-daily insulin injections for the rest of the animal’s life.

Because cats already lack the glucokinase pathway that helps other species regulate blood sugar, they’re starting from a disadvantage. Adding sugar or high-glycemic carbohydrates to their diet pushes an already limited system harder than it’s designed to go.

What About Dental Health?

Interestingly, one concern that doesn’t hold up for cats is the idea that sugar causes dental problems. In humans, sugar feeds bacteria that produce acid, leading to cavities and gum disease. But cats don’t get cavities in the same way. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, studies have shown that sugars do not contribute to plaque accumulation in cats. Feline dental disease, including the painful tooth resorption that affects many cats, has different causes related to inflammation and immune response rather than dietary sugar.

So while sugar is problematic for cats in several ways, rotting their teeth isn’t one of them.

Common Sources of Hidden Sugar

Most cat owners aren’t spooning sugar into their pet’s bowl, but sugar sneaks into a cat’s diet through less obvious routes. Some commercial cat foods and treats contain ingredients like corn syrup, molasses, caramel coloring, or fruit extracts. These are added for texture, color, or to make the food more appealing to the human buying it, since cats can’t taste the sweetness anyway.

Human foods are the other common source. Yogurt, ice cream, bread, cereal, and flavored milk all contain sugar that a curious cat might sample. A single lick won’t cause harm, but regularly sharing sugary human foods introduces unnecessary carbohydrates into a system that isn’t built for them.

When reading cat food labels, look for named animal proteins as the first ingredients. If sugar, syrup, or sweetener appears on the list, it’s there for manufacturing purposes, not for your cat’s nutrition.

What Cats Actually Need Instead

A cat’s ideal diet is high in animal protein, moderate in fat, and very low in carbohydrates. In the wild, a cat’s prey (mice, birds, small reptiles) contains roughly 50 to 60 percent protein, 30 to 40 percent fat, and only about 1 to 2 percent carbohydrates. Many commercial dry foods contain 30 to 40 percent carbohydrates or more, which is already well above what a cat’s metabolism is optimized for.

Wet food tends to be lower in carbohydrates and higher in protein than dry kibble, making it a closer match to what cats evolved to eat. For cats that are already overweight or showing early signs of insulin resistance, switching to a lower-carbohydrate wet food can make a meaningful difference in blood sugar stability and weight management. The goal isn’t to eliminate every trace of carbohydrate, but to keep the overall sugar and starch load low enough that your cat’s limited metabolic toolkit can handle it comfortably.
