Talking to yourself is not just normal, it’s associated with stronger cognitive function. Research consistently links self-directed speech to better problem-solving, sharper focus, and more effective emotional regulation, all markers of mental agility. In one study of young adults, every single participant used private speech during challenging tasks, suggesting it’s a universal cognitive tool rather than an oddity.

Why Your Brain Uses Self-Talk

The connection between talking to yourself and thinking well has roots in how the brain develops. Children naturally begin speaking aloud to themselves as they learn to solve problems, turning language they once used with others inward to guide their own behavior. This process, first described by the developmental psychologist Lev Vygotsky in the 1930s, is now well supported by decades of research. Private speech in childhood lays the foundation for the internal monologue adults use to plan, reason, and stay on task.

What’s interesting is that adults don’t fully outgrow the habit. When a task gets harder, people tend to shift from silent thinking back to speaking aloud. That shift isn’t a sign of struggling. It’s the brain recruiting an additional channel, auditory processing, to support complex thought. The harder the problem, the more likely you are to talk your way through it.

Self-Talk Sharpens Focus and Memory

When people say the name of an object out loud while looking for it, they find it faster than when they read the name silently. The effect is especially strong when the object you’re looking for doesn’t match a typical mental image. For common-looking targets, a photograph works about as well as hearing the name. But for unusual-looking versions of an object, the auditory label outperforms even picture cues. Not all self-talk works the same way. The type that helps most depends on what you’re doing.

A particularly powerful technique involves a small shift in language: instead of saying “I’m so stressed about this,” you refer to yourself by name or use “you.” Something like “Alex, you can handle this” or “you’ve been through worse.” This distanced self-talk reduces emotional reactivity compared to first-person self-talk, and it works across a wide range of stressful situations, whether you’re reflecting on something painful from the past or bracing for something difficult ahead. The effect holds even for people who score high on measures of emotional vulnerability, meaning it helps the people who need it most.

When Self-Talk Signals Something Else

The kind of self-talk linked to cognitive benefits is fundamentally different from auditory hallucinations. In a healthy brain, when you imagine saying a word, your auditory cortex actually quiets down. It correctly predicts the sound and dials back its response, recognizing the voice as your own. This is the same dampening mechanism that keeps your own voice from sounding startlingly loud to you when you speak.

In people who experience auditory hallucinations, the opposite happens. The brain reacts more strongly to inner speech, as though it’s coming from someone else. The key distinction isn’t volume or frequency of self-talk. It’s whether the voice feels like yours and whether you feel in control of it. Deliberately talking yourself through a problem, narrating your grocery list, or giving yourself a pep talk are all healthy cognitive strategies. Hearing a voice that feels external, that says things you didn’t intend, or that you can’t stop is a qualitatively different experience.

Talking to yourself doesn’t prove you’re a genius, but it does reflect your brain actively engaging its higher cognitive functions. Self-directed speech improves visual search speed, boosts precision on complex tasks, strengthens emotional control, and supports the same executive functions involved in planning, reasoning, and self-monitoring. The people who talk to themselves most tend to do so when facing the hardest problems, not the easiest ones. That pattern suggests self-talk is a sign of a brain working at full capacity rather than one that’s struggling. Everyone does it.
