Talking to yourself out loud is completely normal, and most people do it. Far from being a quirky habit to hide, speaking to yourself serves real cognitive functions that researchers have studied for decades. It can sharpen your focus, boost your memory, and help you work through complex problems. The behavior is so fundamental to human development that children rely on it as one of their primary tools for learning.
Why People Talk to Themselves
The technical term for talking to yourself is “private speech,” and it starts in early childhood. The developmental psychologist Lev Vygotsky proposed that young children first learn to guide their behavior by listening to adults talk them through tasks. Over time, kids begin repeating those instructions to themselves out loud, using speech as a way to regulate their own actions. By around age five, most children start internalizing this speech, turning it into the silent inner monologue that adults experience as “thinking.”
But that internalization is never total. Adults continue to talk out loud to themselves throughout life, especially during moments that demand concentration, emotional processing, or problem-solving. You might narrate your way through assembling furniture, give yourself a pep talk before a job interview, or mutter while searching for your keys. Each of these serves a slightly different purpose, but they all trace back to the same mechanism: using your own voice to organize your thoughts and direct your behavior.
It Actually Improves Your Performance
Talking to yourself out loud isn’t just a comfort habit. It measurably improves how well you think. A 2023 study published in Consciousness and Cognition tested 118 young adults on a card-matching game that relied on visual-spatial working memory. Participants performed significantly better on trials where they talked out loud compared to trials where they stayed silent. The researchers confirmed this wasn’t just a correlation: when participants were specifically instructed to remain quiet, their performance dropped.
Interestingly, this benefit held regardless of how difficult the task was. Whether the cards were easy or hard to label verbally, speaking out loud still helped. The people who benefited most were those who naturally used more self-talk during the task and those who reported regularly talking to themselves in everyday life. In other words, if you’re already a habitual self-talker, you’re likely getting an even bigger cognitive boost from it.
Two Types of Self-Talk
Not all self-talk works the same way. Researchers distinguish between two main types: instructional self-talk and motivational self-talk.
- Instructional self-talk involves giving yourself step-by-step directions. “Okay, now flip this piece over, line it up with the edge, then press down.” This type is especially useful for tasks that require precision, coordination, or sequencing.
- Motivational self-talk is more about psych and persistence. “You’ve got this. Keep going. Almost there.” This type tends to shine during tasks that demand endurance or effort rather than fine motor control.
Research on physical tasks found that both types helped equally with skill-based activities like throwing accuracy. But for endurance tasks like push-ups, motivational self-talk outperformed instructional self-talk. The takeaway: the kind of self-talk that helps most depends on what you’re trying to do. Talking yourself through a recipe benefits from instructions. Pushing through the last mile of a run benefits from encouragement.
What Your Brain Does During Self-Talk
When you speak to yourself out loud, your brain activates all the same regions required for normal speech, including the areas responsible for language production, motor planning for your mouth and vocal cords, and auditory processing (because you hear yourself talking). Brain imaging studies using fMRI have confirmed that vocalized self-talk engages a wide network spanning multiple brain systems, not just the language centers.
This is part of why speaking out loud is more powerful than just thinking quietly. When you vocalize a thought, you’re recruiting more of your brain to process it. You’re producing language, hearing it, and then re-processing it as input. That extra loop of feedback helps information stick and keeps your attention anchored to the task at hand.
When Self-Talk Might Signal Something Else
Ordinary self-talk feels like you talking to you. You know the words are yours, you’re choosing to say them, and you could stop anytime. This is the key distinction between healthy private speech and something that warrants clinical attention.
The difference comes down to two dimensions: who you experience as the source of the speech, and where it seems to come from. With normal self-talk, you recognize the voice as your own and you feel in control of it. With auditory hallucinations, the voice feels foreign, as if it belongs to someone or something else, and it may seem to come from outside your head rather than from within. The person hearing the voice doesn’t feel like they’re generating it.
Talking to yourself is not listed as a symptom of any mental health condition on its own. It becomes relevant to a clinician only when paired with other experiences: hearing voices you don’t recognize as your own, feeling compelled to speak by an outside force, or losing the sense that you’re the one directing your thoughts. If your self-talk feels voluntary and recognizably “you,” it’s just your brain doing what brains do.
How to Use Self-Talk More Effectively
Since self-talk genuinely improves performance, you can lean into it intentionally rather than treating it as an embarrassing slip. When you’re learning something new or working through a complicated task, narrate your steps out loud. You’ll process the information more deeply than if you just think it through silently.
Before high-pressure situations, use motivational self-talk in the second person. Saying “you can do this” rather than “I can do this” creates a slight psychological distance that research has linked to better emotional regulation. It’s the same reason coaches talk to athletes as “you” rather than asking them to repeat affirmations in first person.
And if you catch yourself muttering in the grocery store or narrating your search for a parking spot, there’s no reason to feel self-conscious about it.
