They work by shredding layers of skin the same way a kitchen grater shreds cheese, and that aggressive removal creates tiny cuts that can let bacteria and fungus into your skin. Several states have actually banned the sharpest versions of these tools from professional salons, and podiatrists generally recommend gentler alternatives.

How Foot Graters Damage Skin

The problem with metal foot files and credo blades is that they don’t distinguish between dead callused skin and the healthy living tissue underneath. A pumice stone or foot scrub works gradually, wearing down the surface layer through friction. A grater-style tool, by contrast, slices. Each pass creates microabrasions, tiny tears in the skin that are invisible to the naked eye but large enough for bacteria and fungus to enter.

These micro-tears are especially risky on the feet, where warm, moist conditions inside shoes create an ideal environment for infection. Even if you’re careful and only target thick calluses, it’s extremely easy to remove too much skin in one session. The result is raw, tender patches that can crack, bleed, or become inflamed over the following days. And because the tool removes skin so efficiently, many people over-use it, thinning out calluses that actually serve a protective purpose. Your body responds by growing the callus back thicker than before, creating a cycle of aggressive removal and regrowth.

Infection Risks Are Higher Than You’d Think

Metal foot files are difficult to fully sterilize, especially the ones with fine perforations where dead skin gets trapped. OSHA notes that salon workers can be exposed to fungal infections through contact with infected skin or through equipment that hasn’t been properly cleaned. Proper disinfection requires soaking tools in an EPA-registered disinfectant for 10 to 30 minutes between uses. UV sanitizing boxes, commonly seen in salons, only store already-clean tools. They don’t actually disinfect them.

At home, most people rinse their foot grater under the tap and toss it back in the bathroom cabinet. That’s nowhere near enough to eliminate the bacteria and fungal spores that collect in the tool’s grooves. Staphylococcus, the bacteria behind staph infections, and dermatophytes, the fungi responsible for athlete’s foot, both thrive on improperly cleaned metal surfaces. If you nick yourself with a contaminated tool, you’re essentially introducing those organisms directly into broken skin.

Why Some States Have Banned Them in Salons

The sharpest version of the foot grater, known as a credo blade, is banned in salon settings across multiple states. New Jersey’s cosmetology board, for example, explicitly prohibits licensed practitioners from using “a credo blade, skin scraper, lancet, or other comparable implement.” New York, Virginia, and several other states have similar restrictions. These bans exist because the tools were causing injuries and infections in professional pedicure settings, even when used by trained technicians. If professionals can’t safely control the tool, that says something about using one at home.

People With Diabetes Face Serious Risks

For anyone with diabetes, using a cheese grater tool on the feet is genuinely dangerous. Diabetes often causes nerve damage in the feet, which means you may not feel when the tool has cut too deep. You could shave into live tissue without realizing it. At the same time, diabetes reduces blood flow to the feet, making infections harder to fight and wounds slower to heal. The American Diabetes Association warns that untrimmed calluses can break down into open ulcers, but also advises never trying to cut or shave calluses yourself, since doing so can lead to ulcers and infection. If you have diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, or poor circulation, callus care should be handled by a podiatrist.

Safer Ways to Remove Calluses

A pumice stone is the most commonly recommended alternative. Soak your feet in warm, soapy water for 5 to 10 minutes first, and soak the pumice stone at the same time. Never use a dry pumice stone. Wet, it glides across the skin and removes dead layers gradually through gentle abrasion rather than cutting. Use light, circular motions and stop immediately if you feel any pain or see redness. You can use a pumice stone daily, but most people only need it a few times a week.

For thicker calluses, urea-based foot creams offer a chemical approach that doesn’t involve scraping at all. Urea softens and dissolves the protein that holds dead skin cells together. Creams with 20% urea work well for mild rough patches, while 40% urea formulas are designed for stubborn calluses. Some products combine 40% urea with salicylic acid for extra exfoliating power. You apply the cream to dry calluses, often at night with socks over top, and the dead skin loosens over several days so it can be gently wiped or rubbed away. This avoids the micro-tear problem entirely.

Foot soaking files made from fine-grit glass or ceramic also offer more control than metal graters. They remove smaller amounts of skin per pass, making it much harder to accidentally cut into live tissue. Whichever tool you choose, the key principle is the same: work gradually, stop before the skin feels tender, and let your feet recover between sessions.
