Why Sweetness Has Nothing to Do With Caffeine
Caffeine is a natural compound found in the tea leaf itself. It dissolves into the water during brewing, and adding or omitting sugar doesn’t change how much ends up in your cup. Research has shown that sugar can slightly alter the solubility of individual caffeine molecules in water, but there’s no evidence this changes the amount your body absorbs or how the caffeine affects you. The “unsweet” label is purely about taste, not chemistry.
Caffeine by Tea Type
Not all teas deliver the same dose. Per 8-ounce cup, here’s what to expect:
- Black tea: ~48 mg
- Green tea: ~29 mg
- Brewed coffee (for comparison): ~96 mg
Black tea has roughly half the caffeine of a same-size cup of coffee. Green tea has about a third. If you’re switching from coffee to unsweetened tea to cut back on caffeine, you’ll get a noticeable reduction but not zero.

Tea steeped in room-temperature water (about 68°F) for four minutes released only around 10 mg of caffeine per cup. The same tea steeped at 122°F for four minutes released about 24 mg. At a full boil (212°F), four minutes of steeping pulled out roughly 43 mg. Hotter water extracts caffeine faster and more completely.
Time matters too, but it plateaus. At boiling temperature, caffeine concentration peaked at about 47 mg around the six-minute mark and didn’t climb further. So steeping your tea for 10 minutes instead of six won’t add much more caffeine, but steeping for just one minute at a full boil cuts the caffeine nearly in half (around 25 mg). If you want less caffeine from the same tea bag, a shorter steep or cooler water will get you there.
Restaurant and Bottled Unsweetened Tea
Fast-food and bottled teas are where serving size really changes the equation. A small unsweetened iced tea at Chick-fil-A contains about 47 mg of caffeine, which is comparable to a home-brewed cup. But a large has around 85 mg, getting closer to coffee territory. Most restaurant iced teas come in 20- to 32-ounce cups, so you could easily take in 80 to 100 mg of caffeine from a single glass without realizing it.
Bottled unsweetened teas from brands like Pure Leaf and Gold Peak vary, but most 16- to 18-ounce bottles contain somewhere between 50 and 90 mg of caffeine. Check the label, since some brands now list caffeine content voluntarily.
What About Decaf Tea?
Decaffeinated tea still contains small amounts of caffeine, typically 1 to 2 percent of the original amount. That works out to roughly 1 to 2 mg per cup for most decaf black teas. It’s a tiny amount, but it’s not zero. Products labeled “caffeine-free” are a different category entirely, meaning the ingredient never contained caffeine in the first place (like herbal teas). Enforcement of decaf labeling is loose, so some decaf products may contain more caffeine than you’d expect.
How Unsweetened Tea Fits Into Daily Limits
The FDA considers up to 400 mg of caffeine per day a safe amount for most adults. At 48 mg per cup, you could drink about eight cups of brewed black tea before hitting that ceiling. Most people aren’t anywhere near that. Even if you’re having two or three large iced teas from a restaurant, you’re still well under the limit, assuming you aren’t also drinking coffee, energy drinks, or soda throughout the day. Where people run into trouble is stacking multiple caffeine sources without tracking the total.
