By comparison, one cup of whole cow’s milk contains about 306 mg. On paper, fortified oat milk matches or slightly exceeds dairy milk in calcium content.

The key word here is “fortified.” Oat milk doesn’t naturally contain significant calcium. Manufacturers add calcium compounds during production, most commonly tricalcium phosphate or calcium carbonate. Without that fortification step, oat milk would be a poor source of calcium. This matters because not every brand fortifies to the same level, and some don’t fortify at all.

Organic Oat Milk Is a Different Story

If you buy organic oat milk, check the label carefully. Organic-certified plant milks cannot contain added vitamins and minerals under current regulations, which means organic oat milk typically has little to no calcium. This catches a lot of people off guard, especially those choosing organic because they assume it’s the healthier option. If calcium intake is a priority for you, conventional fortified oat milk is the better pick, or you’ll need to get that calcium elsewhere.

Your Body Absorbs Less Than the Label Suggests

Here’s where things get complicated. The calcium listed on an oat milk carton reflects what’s in the liquid, not what your body actually takes in. Calcium bioavailability, the percentage your body can absorb and use, varies significantly depending on the source.

Skim milk has a bioavailability of roughly 30%, meaning your body absorbs about a third of the calcium present. One study looking at plant milks fortified with tricalcium phosphate (the type commonly used in oat milk) estimated bioavailability as low as 3% to 5%, though that figure likely underestimates real-world absorption. A human study on soy milk fortified with the same compound found bioavailability closer to 18%. The truth probably falls somewhere in between, but the takeaway is clear: you absorb meaningfully less calcium from oat milk than from dairy milk, even when the label shows similar numbers.

Two factors work against absorption. First, the calcium compounds used in fortification simply aren’t absorbed as readily as the naturally occurring calcium in dairy. Second, oats contain phytic acid, a compound that binds to minerals like calcium and makes them harder for your body to use. A study on adolescent boys found that calcium absorption from an oatmeal-based meal was only 74% as effective as from a meal without phytic acid. Phytic acid also interferes with the absorption of iron, zinc, and magnesium.

How to Get the Most Calcium From Oat Milk

Fortified calcium tends to settle at the bottom of the carton, so shaking it well before pouring makes a real difference. If you skip this step, your first few glasses may contain less calcium than the label claims, and the last pour will be concentrated with it.

Pairing oat milk with vitamin D helps, since vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in your gut. Many fortified oat milks already include vitamin D (a typical serving provides about 25% of your daily value), which partially offsets the lower bioavailability. Consuming calcium alongside food rather than on an empty stomach also tends to improve absorption.

If oat milk is your primary milk substitute and you’re relying on it for calcium, consider whether one or two cups a day is truly meeting your needs. Given the absorption gap, you may be getting the equivalent of half or less of what the label suggests in usable calcium. Supplementing with other calcium-rich foods like leafy greens, tofu made with calcium sulfate, canned sardines or salmon with bones, or fortified orange juice can help close that gap.

Comparing Oat Milk to Other Plant Milks

Most major plant milks (soy, almond, rice, oat) are fortified to similar calcium levels, typically 300 to 450 mg per cup. The bioavailability challenges aren’t unique to oat milk either. All plant milks fortified with tricalcium phosphate face the same absorption limitations. Soy milk has a slight edge because soy protein itself may support calcium retention, and it’s the most studied alternative in terms of nutritional adequacy. But across the board, no plant milk delivers calcium as efficiently as dairy.

Among plant milks, oat milk stands out for its fiber content (about 2 grams per cup) and its naturally creamy texture, which makes it popular in coffee and cooking. Its calcium content, when fortified, is competitive with any option on the shelf. Just don’t mistake the number on the nutrition panel for the amount your bones are actually receiving.
