Warm formula is not measurably easier to digest than cold or room-temperature formula. Studies on newborns have consistently found that stomach emptying speed is the same regardless of whether the formula is served warm or cool. The CDC states plainly that infant formula does not need to be warmed before feeding. That said, there are a few real reasons some babies seem to prefer warm bottles, and understanding them can help you figure out what works for yours.
What the Research Shows About Digestion Speed
The most direct way to measure digestibility is to track how quickly the stomach empties after a feeding. Two separate studies on newborns tested this by comparing feeds given at body temperature versus room temperature. Both found the same result: temperature had no effect on gastric emptying rate. The stomach processes warm and cool formula at the same speed.
This makes sense biologically. Once liquid reaches the stomach, the body adjusts it to core temperature relatively quickly. A few degrees of difference at the start of a feeding don’t change the chemical process of breaking down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates in any meaningful way.
Why Some Babies Tolerate Warm Feeds Better
Even though digestion speed doesn’t change, there is some evidence that warm feeds lead to better “feeding tolerance” in certain babies. Research on premature infants found that warming milk to body temperature (around 98.6°F or 37°C) appeared to improve how well they accepted and kept down the feeding. The North American Human Milk Banking Association recommends warming feeds to body temperature specifically for premature infants, particularly those at higher risk for intestinal complications.
For healthy, full-term babies, the picture is simpler. Most will happily drink formula at any temperature once they’re used to it. But babies who have only been breastfed are accustomed to milk arriving at body temperature, so a cold bottle can be startling or off-putting. What looks like a digestive problem (fussiness, refusing the bottle, spitting up) may actually be a preference issue. The baby isn’t struggling to digest cold formula. They just don’t like it yet.
Temperature, Gas, and Fussiness
Parents often notice their baby seems gassier or fussier with cold bottles and assume the temperature is causing digestive trouble. A few things could explain this that aren’t really about temperature at all. A baby who resists a cold bottle may swallow more air while fussing and latching poorly, which leads to more gas. Switching to a warm bottle calms the baby, the latch improves, less air gets swallowed, and the gas problem seems to disappear.
If your baby is consistently gassy or colicky, temperature is unlikely to be the root cause. Issues like the flow rate of the nipple, feeding position, the type of formula protein, or a sensitivity to an ingredient are far more common culprits. Warming the bottle is worth trying as one easy variable to change, but don’t expect it to solve persistent digestive discomfort on its own.
How Warm Is Warm Enough
Breast milk leaves the body at roughly 98.6°F (37°C), so that’s the biological baseline babies evolved to drink at. You don’t need to hit this number precisely. Anything in the range of body temperature to slightly below feels comfortable to most infants.
To test, drop a few drops of formula on the inside of your wrist or the back of your hand. It should feel warm, not hot. If it feels neutral or slightly warm against your skin, it’s in the right zone. Overheating formula is a bigger concern than underheating it. When milk is heated above body temperature, fat absorption can drop by roughly a third, which actually does reduce nutritional value.
Safe Ways to Warm a Bottle
The simplest method is holding the bottle under warm running water for a minute or two, swirling it gently. A bowl of warm (not boiling) water works the same way. Bottle warmers designed for this purpose are convenient but not necessary.
Microwaves are the one method to avoid. They heat liquid unevenly, creating hot spots even when the outside of the bottle feels fine. One study measured temperatures at different points inside microwaved bottles and found the top portion reached nearly 113°F (45°C) while other areas stayed much cooler. Swirling the bottle after microwaving does bring the overall temperature down to a safe range (around 95°F), but the risk of missing a hot pocket and burning your baby’s mouth isn’t worth the convenience.
Cold Formula Is Perfectly Fine
If your baby accepts cold or room-temperature formula without complaint, there is no nutritional or digestive reason to warm it. The CDC confirms that warming is entirely optional. Many parents find that introducing room-temperature bottles early makes life significantly easier, especially for nighttime feeds and outings where warming isn’t practical.
Babies who resist cold formula at first can often be transitioned gradually. Start with their preferred warm temperature and make each bottle slightly cooler over the course of a week or two. Most babies adjust without fuss once the change is gradual enough.
