Is Wegovy Single Use? How the Pen Works and Why

Yes, Wegovy is a single-use, disposable, pre-filled pen. Each pen contains exactly one dose of semaglutide, and you throw it away after a single injection. There is no way to refill it or use it a second time.

What Comes in the Box

Each Wegovy carton contains four individual pens, one for each week of a monthly supply. Every pen is pre-loaded with a fixed dose, so there’s no measuring or dialing involved. The five available strengths are 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg. Your prescriber determines which strength you receive based on where you are in the gradual dose-increase schedule, which starts at the lowest strength and works up to 2.4 mg over about four months.

If you’re prescribed a three-month supply, you’ll typically receive three separate packs, each containing four pens, for a total of 12 injections.

How the Pen Works

The Wegovy pen is an autoinjector, meaning the needle deploys and retracts automatically. You press the pen against your skin and hold it in place. A yellow bar begins to move, showing that the injection is underway. You’ll hear two clicks during the process, but don’t pull the pen away after the second click. Wait until the yellow bar stops moving completely to make sure you’ve received the full dose.

Once the injection is finished, the needle retracts back into the pen body. At that point, the pen is spent and cannot deliver another dose.

Why You Can’t Reuse It

The pen is engineered for a single activation. After firing, the internal mechanism is locked and the pre-filled medication chamber is empty. Beyond the mechanical limitation, reusing any needle or syringe carries real infection risk. The CDC warns that even invisible quantities of bacteria like staph or MRSA, or viruses like hepatitis C, can contaminate a needle after one use. A fresh, sterile needle should be used for every injection, no exceptions.

Storage Before Use

Unused pens should stay refrigerated between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C), ideally in their original carton. If needed, you can keep an unused pen at room temperature for up to 28 days, as long as the temperature stays at or below 86°F (30°C) and the pen isn’t exposed to direct light or freezing conditions. That 28-day window starts once the pen leaves the fridge, so it’s worth noting the date if you take one out for travel or convenience.

Disposing of Used Pens

After each injection, place the used pen immediately into a sharps disposal container. Don’t toss it into regular household trash. Sharps containers are available at most pharmacies, and you should stop adding to a container once it’s about three-quarters full.

Getting rid of the full container depends on where you live. Common options include drop-off sites at pharmacies, hospitals, or fire stations; household hazardous waste collection; and mail-back programs that let you ship sealed containers to a disposal facility for a fee.
