Is Yawning a Sign of Tiredness or Something Else?

Yawning is linked to tiredness, but it’s not simply a signal that you need sleep. It happens most often during transitions between states of alertness, like when you’re waking up or winding down for bed. The current scientific evidence points to yawning as your body’s way of regulating brain temperature and boosting arousal, which explains why it clusters around moments when your brain is shifting gears rather than when you’re at your sleepiest.

What Yawning Actually Does to Your Brain

For decades, the popular explanation was that yawning pulls in extra oxygen when levels run low. That idea has been thoroughly debunked. A well-known experiment showed that breathing pure oxygen didn’t reduce yawning, and breathing air high in carbon dioxide didn’t increase it, even though both changed breathing rate. So yawning isn’t about oxygen at all.

The leading explanation today is the brain cooling hypothesis. When you yawn, the deep inhalation draws cool ambient air into your airways while the wide stretch of your jaw increases blood flow to your brain. Together, these actions work like a radiator, pulling heat away from brain tissue. A study comparing outdoor yawning rates in Arizona found that nearly half of winter participants yawned (at an average air temperature of 71°F), compared to less than a quarter in summer, when temperatures hovered near body temperature at 98.6°F. When the surrounding air is already as warm as your body, yawning can’t cool anything down, so the brain appears to suppress it.

Research in rats confirmed this directly: brain temperature was highest just before a yawn and dropped measurably afterward.

Why It Happens When You’re Tired

Brain temperature peaks right before sleep and is lowest during sleep itself. That pre-sleep rise in temperature is exactly the condition that triggers yawning. So the association with tiredness is real, but the relationship is more nuanced than “yawn equals sleepy.” Your brain is warming up as it prepares to transition into sleep, and yawning is one mechanism it uses to manage that thermal shift.

The same logic applies to waking up. When you yawn in the morning, your metabolism is ramping up quickly, generating heat that needs to be managed. Yawning during that transition helps regulate temperature while also promoting alertness. Research shows that yawning stimulates blood flow along the carotid artery in your neck through the physical compression of a deep jaw stretch, which may directly increase cortical arousal, essentially giving your brain a small jolt toward wakefulness.

Heart rate also rises during a yawn, driven by a brief spike in sympathetic nervous system activity. This is consistent with the idea that yawning is less about shutting down and more about resetting. It shows up not only when you’re drowsy but also before important events, during boring tasks, and at moments of behavioral transition, all times when your brain needs a push toward a more alert state.

How Much Yawning Is Normal

Adults yawn about nine times a day on average, though some people yawn up to 20 times daily and that’s still within a normal range. Each yawn lasts four to seven seconds. Yawning more on a day when you slept poorly, or during a tedious afternoon meeting, is completely expected. It becomes worth paying attention to only when the frequency is noticeably higher than your personal baseline and isn’t explained by fatigue or boredom.

Why Yawns Are Contagious

Seeing, hearing, or even reading about yawning can trigger one. This isn’t random. Contagious yawning appears to rely on a perception-action mechanism: when you observe someone else in a particular physical state, your brain activates neural representations of that same state, producing a matching response. It’s the same basic wiring involved in empathy, which is why the two have been studied together.

There’s a social dimension to it as well. People are more likely to “catch” a yawn from friends and family than from strangers, mirroring the way empathy is stronger with people we’re close to. Men and women are equally likely to catch a contagious yawn, but women who do catch one tend to yawn more frequently in response. Interestingly, people with lower measured empathy, including children with autism spectrum disorder and adults with high levels of psychopathic traits, are less likely to engage in contagious yawning at all.

Other Triggers Beyond Tiredness

Because yawning is tied to brain temperature and arousal regulation rather than sleepiness alone, several non-fatigue factors can set it off. Boredom is a classic trigger: your brain’s activity level is dropping, and yawning acts as an attempt to re-engage. Stress and anxiety before a big event can do it too, as your brain heats up with increased metabolic demand.

Certain medications also cause excessive yawning as a side effect. Antidepressants that affect serotonin are the most common culprits, including widely prescribed drugs like fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, and escitalopram, along with others that act on both serotonin and norepinephrine. The mechanism ties back to temperature: increased serotonin activity raises both brain and core body temperature, which in turn triggers more yawning as a compensatory cooling response.

When Frequent Yawning Signals Something Else

Excessive yawning that goes well beyond your normal pattern and isn’t linked to poor sleep, boredom, or medication can occasionally point to an underlying medical issue. Conditions associated with unusually frequent yawning include epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain tumors, and vasovagal reactions, where stimulation of the vagus nerve causes drops in heart rate and blood pressure. In rare cases, it has been observed alongside heart attack and aortic dissection.

These are uncommon causes. For most people, a stretch of frequent yawning reflects exactly what it feels like: you’re tired, your brain is warm, or you’re stuck in a low-stimulation environment. The yawn itself is your body’s attempt to fix the problem, not just announce it.
