A dog that suddenly starts walking funny is telling you something is wrong, and the cause could range from a minor muscle strain to a serious neurological problem. The key to figuring out what’s going on is watching exactly how your dog’s movement has changed, because different types of abnormal walking point to very different underlying issues.
Three Types of Abnormal Walking
Not all “walking funny” looks the same, and the distinction matters. Veterinarians group abnormal movement into three broad categories, each pointing to a different part of the body.
Lameness (limping): Your dog favors one leg, putting weight on it briefly and gingerly before quickly shifting to the other side. The stride on the painful leg looks shortened. If the pain is severe enough, your dog may carry the leg entirely and refuse to put it down. Lameness is almost always caused by pain in a joint, bone, or soft tissue.
Ataxia (loss of coordination): Your dog looks drunk. They sway, stumble, cross their legs over each other, or seem unsure where their feet are landing. This isn’t about pain. It’s a failure of the nervous system to coordinate movement properly. You might notice your dog’s paws knuckling under so the tops of the toes drag on the ground.
Weakness (paresis): Your dog can move but struggles to generate the force needed to walk normally. They may tremble, collapse unexpectedly, or have trouble getting up from lying down. A key difference: a painful limb gets carried off the ground, while a weak limb gets dragged along it.
Sometimes these categories overlap. A dog with pain in both back legs may walk with a stiff, stilted gait that looks neurological. If you’re not sure what you’re seeing, a short video of your dog walking on a flat surface is one of the most useful things you can bring to a vet appointment.
Joint and Ligament Problems
Orthopedic injuries are among the most common reasons a dog starts walking funny, particularly in the back legs. One of the most frequent culprits is a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), the dog equivalent of an ACL tear in humans. This ligament stabilizes the knee joint, and when it ruptures, your dog will limp on the affected leg, sometimes severely.
A torn CCL can happen suddenly during play or exercise, or it can degrade slowly over weeks. With a chronic tear, you may notice the muscles on the affected thigh looking thinner than the other side, and the knee joint itself may feel thicker or swollen. Dogs with this injury often sit with the bad leg kicked out to the side rather than tucked neatly underneath them.
Arthritis is another major cause, especially in older or larger dogs. Stiffness that’s worse in the morning or after rest, reluctance to jump, and a slow, careful gait are hallmarks. A monthly injection that targets pain signaling has become widely used for canine arthritis. In clinical trials, it showed significant improvement in pain relief compared to placebo, and a global safety review of over 18 million doses found adverse events were rare, occurring in fewer than 10 out of every 10,000 treated dogs.
Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, luxating patellas (kneecaps that slip out of place), and panosteitis (growing pains in young large-breed dogs) all produce their own versions of limping or stiffness.
Vestibular Disease: The “Drunk Dog” Walk
If your dog is suddenly tilting their head to one side, stumbling, walking in circles, or falling over, you’re likely looking at a vestibular problem. The vestibular system controls balance, and when it malfunctions, dogs can look alarmingly disabled. You might also notice their eyes flicking rapidly back and forth or up and down, a sign called nystagmus.
In older dogs, this is often idiopathic vestibular syndrome, sometimes called “old dog vestibular disease.” It comes on suddenly and looks terrifying. The first 48 to 72 hours are typically the worst, with dogs sometimes unable to stand or eat without help. The good news: most dogs improve significantly within one to three weeks and often return to normal. Some are left with a permanent slight head tilt, but it rarely affects their quality of life. No specific treatment has been proven to speed recovery, though your vet may provide supportive care for nausea or difficulty eating.
Vestibular signs can also result from ear infections, polyps, or less commonly, brain lesions. Your vet will want to distinguish between peripheral vestibular disease (inner ear) and central vestibular disease (brain), because the treatment and outlook differ substantially.
Spinal and Nerve Problems
Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is one of the most common spinal conditions in dogs, particularly in long-backed breeds like Dachshunds, Corgis, and Basset Hounds. A disc between the vertebrae bulges or ruptures and presses on the spinal cord. Mild cases cause a wobbly, uncoordinated walk. Severe cases cause sudden paralysis.
Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive disease of the spinal cord that typically starts with subtle hind-leg weakness in dogs over seven or eight years old. Early signs include scuffing the back paws, swaying in the hindquarters, and difficulty with stairs. It gradually worsens over months. Breeds at higher risk include German Shepherds, Boxers, Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Standard Poodles, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and Pugs, among others. A genetic test is available through the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory for the associated gene mutation.
Tick paralysis is another possibility, especially if your dog spends time outdoors in tick-prone areas. A neurotoxin in tick saliva disrupts normal nerve and muscle function. Weakness typically begins in the legs two to seven days after a tick attaches and can progress to full paralysis within hours to days. The treatment is straightforward: find and remove the tick. Most dogs recover quickly once it’s gone.
What the Vet Visit Looks Like
Your vet will start by watching your dog stand and walk, looking for asymmetry in muscle mass, joint swelling, and how your dog distributes weight. They’ll then watch your dog walk and trot, often in a hallway, looking for subtle clues like a head bob (indicating front-leg pain) or a hip hike (back-leg pain).
Next comes hands-on examination. Starting at the toes and working up each limb, the vet palpates every bone, joint, tendon, and muscle group, comparing left to right. They’re checking for pain responses, swelling, grinding sensations in the joints (called crepitus), and abnormal range of motion. Long bones get firm pressure to check for fractures or bone tumors. Each joint is moved through its full range to identify where the problem is.
A basic neurological exam happens at the same time. The vet will flip your dog’s paw over so the top rests on the ground. A normal dog immediately corrects the position. A dog with nerve damage may leave the paw flipped, not realizing it’s wrong. This simple test helps separate an orthopedic problem from a neurological one. Depending on results, your vet may recommend X-rays, blood work, or advanced imaging like an MRI.
When It’s an Emergency
Some changes in walking require an immediate vet visit, not a wait-and-see approach. Sudden paralysis, where your dog abruptly cannot move one or more legs, is always an emergency. Dogs with acute spinal cord problems like disc ruptures or “spinal strokes” (fibrocartilaginous embolism) sometimes yelp during activity and then suddenly can’t walk. The faster these dogs get veterinary care, the better their chances of recovery.
Other red flags that warrant urgent attention:
- Rapidly worsening weakness over hours rather than days
- Loss of bladder or bowel control alongside the walking changes
- Severe pain with crying, panting, or refusal to move
- Swollen, hot limb that could indicate a fracture or serious infection
- Known tick exposure with progressive leg weakness
Helping Your Dog at Home
While you’re waiting for your vet appointment or supporting recovery after a diagnosis, a few practical adjustments make a real difference. Place rugs or yoga mats on slippery floors, since hard surfaces are difficult for dogs with weak or painful legs. Block access to stairs if your dog is unsteady. Use a rolled towel under the belly as a makeshift sling to help support a dog that’s struggling to walk outside for bathroom breaks. For longer-term needs, rear-end support harnesses are available that let you take weight off your dog’s hind legs during walks.
Keep your dog at a healthy weight. Even a few extra pounds put meaningful stress on compromised joints and make neurological weakness harder to manage. Short, gentle leash walks on flat ground maintain muscle tone without overdoing it. Ramps for getting in and out of the car or onto furniture reduce the impact on sore joints and protect healing spines.
