The short answer: caffeine is a mild diuretic, and InBody scans measure your body composition by sending electrical currents through your body’s water. Anything that shifts your hydration level, even slightly, can change the readings. That’s why InBody’s official pre-test instructions say to avoid caffeine on the day of your test. But the real picture is more nuanced than a blanket “no coffee” rule suggests.
How an InBody Scan Actually Works
An InBody device uses a technology called bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). You stand barefoot on metal plates and grip handles, and the machine sends tiny electrical currents through your body. Those currents travel through water, so the device is really measuring how much water you have and where it’s distributed. Other Factors That Affect Your Results More
Caffeine gets a lot of attention, but several other factors have a bigger impact on BIA accuracy. Exercise within a few hours of your scan redistributes blood flow and body water, potentially skewing results more than a cup of coffee. Eating a large meal adds weight and water to your digestive system that the device can misinterpret. Even the time of day matters: you’re typically more dehydrated in the morning and more hydrated by evening.
Creatine supplementation is another one worth knowing about. A study using the InBody 770 found that just one week of creatine loading increased total body water by about 2%, which the device read as an increase in fat-free mass. If you’ve recently started or stopped taking creatine, your scan results will reflect that water shift rather than actual muscle gain or loss.
For the most reliable results, standard preparation looks like this:
- No caffeine on the day of your test
- No food for 3 to 4 hours before
- No intense exercise for at least 12 hours before
- Consistent hydration in the days leading up, not just chugging water right before
- Same time of day for repeat scans
If You Already Drank Coffee
If you had your morning coffee and then realized you have a scan later, don’t panic. The research suggests that for regular coffee drinkers, the impact is minimal. Your results won’t be wildly inaccurate. The bigger concern is whether you’ll follow the same routine next time you scan, since consistency between tests is what makes your trend data useful.
Drinking extra water to “flush out” or offset the caffeine isn’t a great strategy either. Overhydrating before a scan introduces its own distortion, potentially making you appear to have more lean mass than you do. The goal is to arrive in your normal, everyday hydration state, not artificially inflated or depleted.
