A normal body temperature for most adults falls between 97°F (36.1°C) and 99°F (37.2°C), with the long-standing average of 98.6°F (37°C) serving as a rough midpoint. But that classic number, established in 1851 by a German physician who measured thousands of patients, is likely higher than what most people actually run today.
Why 98.6°F May Not Be Your Normal
The 98.6°F standard comes from over 170 years ago, when Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich took millions of temperature readings from 25,000 patients in Leipzig, Germany. His data put the average at 37°C, and the number stuck. But a large-scale study published in eLife, drawing on nearly 190,000 temperature measurements spanning from the Civil War era to 2017, found that average human body temperature has been steadily dropping: about 0.05°F per decade of birth.
Men born in the early 1800s had temperatures roughly 1°F higher than men today. Women showed a similar pattern, with a decline of about 0.6°F since the 1890s. The researchers couldn’t pinpoint a single cause, but reduced rates of chronic infection and inflammation in modern populations, along with climate-controlled living environments, are leading explanations. The practical takeaway: if your thermometer consistently reads 97.5°F or 98.0°F when you feel perfectly fine, that’s likely your normal.
How Temperature Changes Throughout the Day
Your body temperature isn’t a fixed number. It rises and falls in a predictable daily cycle tied to your internal clock. Temperatures tend to be lowest in the early morning hours and highest in the late afternoon and evening. This swing can easily account for a full degree of difference over the course of a day, which means a reading of 97.4°F before breakfast and 98.8°F after dinner can both be perfectly normal for the same person.
Other everyday factors shift your temperature too. Physical activity generates heat, so a reading taken right after exercise will be elevated. Women of childbearing age experience a temperature dip in the first half of the menstrual cycle and a rise during and after ovulation, a pattern reliable enough that some use it for fertility tracking. Even a hot meal or a warm drink can temporarily nudge the number up.
Where You Measure Matters
Not all thermometer placements give the same reading, and the differences are consistent enough to predict. Oral temperature (under the tongue) is the standard reference point for adults, with an average of 98.6°F. Other sites read higher or lower by a predictable margin:
- Rectal: 0.5 to 1°F higher than oral
- Ear (tympanic): 0.5 to 1°F higher than oral
- Armpit (axillary): 0.5 to 1°F lower than oral
- Forehead (temporal): 0.5 to 1°F lower than oral
So an armpit reading of 97.6°F and an ear reading of 99.2°F could reflect the exact same core temperature. If you’re comparing a number to fever thresholds, it helps to know which site was used. For infants and young children, rectal readings are considered the most accurate.
Normal Ranges for Children
Children run slightly warmer than adults on average, and the fever threshold depends on how the temperature is taken. A child is generally considered to have a fever at these cutoffs:
- Rectal, ear, or forehead: 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
- Oral: 100°F (37.8°C) or higher
- Armpit: 99°F (37.2°C) or higher
For babies under three months, any rectal temperature at or above 100.4°F warrants a call to a pediatrician, even if the baby seems otherwise fine. Infants in this age range can’t mount the same immune response as older children, so fever in a newborn is treated more seriously. For children between 3 and 24 months, the concern level rises when rectal temperatures exceed 102°F (38.9°C) or when a lower fever is accompanied by unusual fussiness, lethargy, or discomfort.
How Aging Affects Body Temperature
Older adults tend to run cooler than younger people. One study found that average temperatures in a group of 96 adults ranged from as low as 95.4°F to 99.3°F, a spread wide enough that a single “normal” number isn’t very useful. Several factors drive this shift: thinning skin and reduced fat in the extremities allow more heat to escape, metabolism slows with age (producing less heat), and certain common medications can lower baseline temperature.
This lower baseline creates a real clinical problem. An older person fighting an infection might register 99°F and technically not meet the standard fever threshold, even though that reading represents a significant jump from their personal normal of, say, 96.8°F. Knowing your own baseline when you’re healthy is more useful than relying on any single cutoff. If you or an older family member runs consistently below 98°F, a smaller temperature spike deserves attention.
When a Reading Becomes a Fever
For adults, an oral temperature of 100°F (37.8°C) or higher is generally classified as a fever. Most fevers in the 100 to 102°F range accompany common viral infections and resolve on their own within a few days. A temperature of 103°F (39.4°C) or higher in an adult is the point where medical guidance becomes important.
A persistent low-grade temperature in the 99 to 100°F range can sometimes reflect nothing more than a warm afternoon, recent exercise, or hormonal changes. But if it lingers for several days without an obvious explanation, it’s worth paying attention to. On the other end, a temperature below 95°F (35°C) is classified as hypothermia, which is a medical emergency regardless of age. This can result from prolonged cold exposure, wet clothing, or, in older adults, even moderately cool indoor environments if heating is inadequate.
Finding Your Own Baseline
Given how much individual variation exists, the most practical thing you can do is take your temperature a few times when you’re feeling completely well. Use the same thermometer and the same measurement site each time, and note the time of day. After a handful of readings, you’ll have a personal baseline that’s far more useful than the textbook 98.6°F. When you do feel sick, you’ll be able to spot a meaningful change rather than guessing whether your number is “normal enough.”
