Polypropylene is one of the most chemically resistant plastics available, holding up well against a wide range of acids, bases, solvents, and salt solutions at room temperature. It handles most everyday chemicals with negligible effect, which is why it shows up in everything from laboratory containers to industrial piping and food packaging. Its main weakness is strong oxidizing agents, including concentrated nitric acid, chromic acid, and halogens, which can degrade the material relatively quickly.
What Polypropylene Resists Well
Polypropylene performs best against the chemical classes you’re most likely to encounter in industrial and laboratory settings. Strong mineral acids like hydrochloric and sulfuric acid at low to moderate concentrations cause negligible damage at room temperature. The same goes for caustic and ammoniacal solutions (strong bases), inorganic salt solutions, many organic solvents, and detergents. At 20°C, dilute acids up to about 10% concentration earn the highest compatibility rating across the board, meaning the material shows essentially no change in weight, strength, or appearance even after prolonged exposure.
Common disinfectants are also safe. Polypropylene tolerates benzalkonium chloride, formalin, formaldehyde, hydrogen peroxide (at typical disinfecting concentrations), and ethanol without meaningful degradation. This makes it a popular choice for medical and lab plasticware that needs regular sterilization.
Where Polypropylene Breaks Down
The clear vulnerability is strong oxidizing agents. Thermo Fisher Scientific rates polypropylene’s resistance to strong oxidizers as “F,” meaning you can expect some visible effect (crazing, cracking, loss of strength, or discoloration) after about seven days of constant exposure at room temperature. Polypropylene is slightly more susceptible to oxidizers than polyethylene plastics, which is worth noting if you’re choosing between the two.
Specific chemicals to avoid include fuming nitric acid, concentrated chromic acid, and halogens like chlorine and bromine in their pure or highly concentrated forms. Even at room temperature, 70% nitric acid earns a “C” rating (moderate effect), and at 60°C it jumps to “D” (severely affected). Similarly, 98% sulfuric acid rates “C” at room temperature and becomes completely unsuitable at higher temperatures.
How Temperature Changes the Picture
Temperature is the single biggest factor that shifts polypropylene from “excellent” to “unsuitable” for a given chemical. A solution that causes zero problems at 20°C can damage the material badly at 60°C or above. The pattern is consistent across most acids:
- Hydrochloric acid at 30%: Negligible effect at 20°C, moderate effect at 60°C, severely affected at 100°C.
- Sulfuric acid at 60%: Negligible effect at 20°C, moderate effect at 80°C.
- Nitric acid at 60%: Negligible effect at 20°C, severely affected at 80°C.
Dilute solutions (around 2 to 10%) remain safe across a much wider temperature range. For instance, 2% hydrochloric acid and 10% sulfuric or nitric acid all show negligible effect even at 100°C. The takeaway: if you’re working at elevated temperatures, keep concentrations low or verify compatibility with a detailed chart for your exact conditions. Length of exposure also matters. Brief contact is far more forgiving than continuous immersion over days or weeks.
Polypropylene vs. HDPE
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is the material most often compared to polypropylene for chemical storage. Both are polyolefins with broadly similar resistance profiles, but they diverge in a few areas. Polypropylene handles dilute and concentrated acids like nitric acid well, along with alcohols and bases. HDPE performs better with some reducing agents and oxidants, and is slightly more tolerant of strong oxidizing chemicals overall.
If your primary concern is oxidizing environments, HDPE has a small edge. If you need better heat tolerance (polypropylene’s melting point sits about 20 to 30°C higher than HDPE) or resistance to repeated flexing, polypropylene is the stronger choice. For most common acids, bases, and solvents at moderate temperatures, either material works.
Food and Medical Use
Polypropylene is FDA-compliant for food contact applications, which means it meets strict limits on how much chemical migration can occur from the plastic into food or beverages. Additives used in food-grade polypropylene are regulated to very low levels, typically not exceeding 0.2% by weight, to minimize any leaching. The material is approved for contact with all standard food types under a wide range of temperature conditions, from freezer storage through hot-fill processing. It is not, however, cleared for contact with infant formula or human milk under certain additive formulations, so specialized containers exist for those uses.
For medical and laboratory applications, polypropylene’s chemical inertness means it won’t react with most reagents, biological samples, or cleaning solutions. It can be autoclaved (steam sterilized) without warping, which is a practical advantage over many other plastics.
Practical Guidelines for Selection
When evaluating polypropylene for a specific chemical application, three variables matter most: the chemical itself, its concentration, and the operating temperature. Dilute acids and bases at room temperature are almost universally safe. As concentration climbs past 50 to 60%, or temperature rises above 60°C, you should check a detailed compatibility chart for your exact combination. Any application involving strong oxidizers, halogens, or fuming acids is likely a poor fit regardless of temperature.
Stress also plays a role. Polypropylene under mechanical load, such as during centrifugation or under pressure in piping, can fail at lower chemical thresholds than an unstressed sample. If your application combines chemical exposure with physical force, build in an extra margin of safety or consider a fluoropolymer like PTFE for the most demanding environments.
