Most poppy varieties prefer a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.5 to 8.0). Once established, particularly perennial Oriental poppies, they are drought-tolerant and resent excessive watering. They develop deep taproots, which allow them to seek moisture far below the surface, making them sensitive to competition from shallow-rooted, moisture-loving neighbors.

Successful placement relies on adequate spacing to ensure proper air circulation and resource availability. Perennial poppies need to be spaced at least 10 to 12 inches apart to allow their root systems to access sufficient nutrients. When interplanting, place the poppy first, then position companions, ensuring beneficial plants do not overhang or shade the poppy seedlings early on.
For maintenance, a mixed bed requires targeted watering and feeding to respect the poppy’s low-input needs. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between applications; this encourages the taproot to develop fully.
