Radon gas produces no immediate symptoms. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, so you cannot detect it with your senses. There is no such thing as acute “radon poisoning” the way you might experience carbon monoxide poisoning. Instead, radon causes damage silently over years, and the only known health consequence definitively linked to it is lung cancer, which typically develops 5 to 25 years after prolonged exposure. An estimated 21,000 Americans die from radon-related lung cancer every year, making it the second leading cause of the disease after smoking.
Why Radon Has No Early Warning Signs
When you breathe in radon, tiny radioactive particles settle in your lung tissue. These particles release a type of radiation called alpha particles, which deliver intense, localized energy to nearby cells. That energy tears through DNA strands, creating clusters of damage in a small area rather than the scattered, repairable hits caused by other forms of radiation. Studies have shown that radon exposure causes large-scale genetic deletions, removing thousands of base pairs of DNA at once. Over time, these mutations accumulate and can trigger uncontrolled cell growth.
None of this produces pain, inflammation, or any sensation you would notice. Your lungs don’t have the kind of nerve endings that would alert you to microscopic DNA damage. By the time symptoms appear, lung cancer has already developed.
Signs of Radon-Related Lung Cancer
Because radon’s only confirmed health effect is lung cancer, the “symptoms of radon poisoning” are really the symptoms of lung cancer itself. These include:
- A persistent cough that doesn’t go away or gets worse over weeks
- Coughing up blood or bloody mucus
- Chest pain, especially pain that worsens with deep breathing
- Shortness of breath during activities that didn’t previously cause it
- Unexplained weight loss
These symptoms usually don’t appear until the cancer is fairly advanced, which is part of what makes radon so dangerous. There is no early-stage warning that tells you radon has been affecting your lungs. The damage happens quietly for years or decades before a tumor grows large enough to cause problems.
Smoking Dramatically Multiplies the Risk
Radon is dangerous on its own, but the combination of radon and smoking is far worse than either risk alone. The two act synergistically, meaning they amplify each other’s effects rather than simply adding together.
The numbers are stark. At 4 pCi/L, which is the EPA’s action level for homes, about 62 out of every 1,000 smokers exposed over a lifetime will develop lung cancer. For people who have never smoked, that number drops to about 7 out of 1,000. At very high levels like 20 pCi/L, roughly 260 out of 1,000 smokers will develop lung cancer compared to 36 out of 1,000 nonsmokers. Even among nonsmokers, though, radon kills about 3,000 Americans per year, so it is not a risk limited to people who smoke.
Other Possible Health Effects
Lung cancer is the only outcome definitively proven to result from radon exposure, but researchers are investigating other connections. A study from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health found that women who had experienced an ischemic stroke and lived in areas with the highest radon concentrations had a 46% increased risk of developing a blood cell condition called clonal hematopoiesis, which involves genetic mutations in the stem cells that produce blood. This condition has been linked in previous research to higher rates of blood cancers like leukemia and cardiovascular disease. However, the association was limited to stroke patients and did not appear in the general population, so the evidence is preliminary.
How Radon Enters Your Home
Radon forms naturally from the decay of uranium in soil, which exists in nearly all ground. The gas seeps upward through the earth and enters homes through cracks in the foundation, gaps around pipes, and other openings where the building meets the ground. Soil gas is the primary source. In some cases, radon can also enter through well water or, rarely, from building materials themselves.
Because radon levels vary enormously from house to house, even neighbors on the same street can have very different concentrations. The only way to know your level is to test. Inexpensive home test kits are widely available at hardware stores and online. The EPA recommends taking action if your home tests at 4 pCi/L or above, and considering mitigation even between 2 and 4 pCi/L, because there is no known safe level of radon exposure.
What Mitigation Looks Like
If your home tests high, a radon mitigation system can typically reduce levels by up to 99%. The most common approach uses a vent pipe and fan to pull radon from beneath the foundation and release it above the roofline, where it disperses harmlessly into outdoor air. Installation usually takes less than a day, and the systems run continuously with minimal energy costs. After installation, you retest to confirm levels have dropped below 4 pCi/L.
Testing is especially important if you live in a region with granite or shale bedrock, if your home has a basement or crawl space, or if you spend significant time on the lowest level of your home. Since radon causes no symptoms until serious damage is done, testing is the only form of early detection available.
