Random bruising on the legs usually happens because the small blood vessels near the skin’s surface break more easily than you’d expect, often from minor bumps you don’t even notice. Your legs are one of the most common spots for unexplained bruises because they’re exposed to everyday contact with furniture, doorframes, and other objects. In most cases the cause is harmless, but persistent or unusual bruising can sometimes point to a medication side effect, a nutritional gap, or an underlying health condition worth investigating.
How Bruises Form
Bruises appear when tiny blood vessels called capillaries break near the skin’s surface. Blood leaks out of those vessels and collects in the surrounding tissue, producing the familiar red, purple, or black mark. Your body gradually reabsorbs the leaked blood, which is why bruises shift through colors (green, yellow, brown) before fading completely over one to three weeks.
Legs bruise more easily than many other body parts for a simple reason: gravity. Blood in the lower body is already under more pressure, and your legs bump into things constantly throughout the day. You might not register a light knock against a desk or bed frame, but it can be enough to rupture a few fragile capillaries.
Aging and Skin Changes
One of the most common reasons bruising seems to increase “out of nowhere” is gradual changes in your skin and blood vessels. As you age, the tissues that support capillaries weaken, and capillary walls themselves become more fragile. At the same time, your skin thins and loses the protective fatty layer that once cushioned blood vessels from impact. The result is that a bump that wouldn’t have left a mark ten years ago now produces a visible bruise.
Years of sun exposure accelerate this process. Chronic UV damage breaks down the connective tissue in the deeper layers of skin, making blood vessels even more vulnerable. This is why many people notice bruises concentrated on areas with more sun history, like the forearms and lower legs. In older adults, this pattern is common enough to have its own name: senile purpura. It’s not dangerous, but it can be alarming if you’re not expecting it.
Medications That Increase Bruising
If you take any medication that affects blood clotting, unexplained bruises on your legs may be a direct side effect. The most well-known culprits include:
- Over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and naproxen (Aleve), which reduce your blood’s ability to clot
- Blood thinners such as warfarin, rivaroxaban (Xarelto), apixaban (Eliquis), and heparin
- Anti-platelet drugs like clopidogrel (Plavix), which prevent blood cells from clumping together to form clots
- Corticosteroids, which thin the skin over time and make capillaries easier to break
- Certain antibiotics and antidepressants, which can interfere with normal clotting
Even some dietary supplements contribute. Ginkgo biloba, fish oil, and vitamin E all have mild blood-thinning effects that can increase bruising, especially when combined with medications. If you’ve recently started a new medication or supplement and noticed more bruises on your legs, that connection is worth exploring with your provider.
Venous Problems in the Legs
Your leg veins contain one-way valves that push blood upward toward the heart. When those valves become damaged, blood flows backward and pools in the lower legs, a condition called chronic venous insufficiency. The pooling creates high pressure inside the veins, and over time that pressure can burst the smallest capillaries near the skin’s surface.
When capillaries burst from venous pressure, the skin in that area takes on a reddish-brown discoloration that can look like bruising but doesn’t follow the usual color-change pattern. People with varicose veins or a history of blood clots in the legs are more prone to this. If you notice persistent brownish discoloration around your ankles or lower calves rather than distinct bruise marks that fade, venous insufficiency is a likely contributor.
Exercise and Prolonged Standing
Long walks, running, hiking, or simply standing for hours can trigger bruise-like rashes on the lower legs. This happens through a combination of overexertion, heat, dehydration, and the sustained pull of gravity on blood vessels. The condition, sometimes called exercise-induced vasculitis, involves inflammation in the small blood vessels just under the skin. People with varicose veins or venous insufficiency tend to be more susceptible.
These marks typically appear after unusually long periods of activity, like a day spent walking at a theme park or a longer-than-usual hike. They usually resolve on their own within a week or two with rest and elevation.
Nutritional Deficiencies
Your body needs specific nutrients to maintain strong blood vessels and produce clotting proteins. Vitamin C is essential for collagen production, which keeps capillary walls intact. A significant vitamin C deficiency weakens those walls and causes easy bruising, bleeding gums, and slow wound healing. Vitamin K plays a different but equally important role: it’s required for the production of several clotting factors. Without enough vitamin K, your blood simply takes longer to clot after a vessel breaks, making bruises larger and more frequent.
Iron deficiency can also play a role. When iron levels drop low enough to reduce platelet function, bruising becomes more likely even from minor contact.
Blood and Clotting Disorders
Less commonly, random bruising on the legs signals an underlying problem with your blood’s ability to clot. Several conditions can cause this:
Von Willebrand disease is the most common inherited bleeding disorder. It involves low levels or poor function of a protein that helps platelets stick together at the site of an injury. People with this condition often bruise easily throughout their lives and may also experience heavy periods, prolonged bleeding after dental work, or frequent nosebleeds.
Thrombocytopenia, a low platelet count, can result from many causes including autoimmune conditions, certain infections, and some cancers like leukemia. Platelets are the first responders when a blood vessel breaks. When your platelet count drops significantly, even the tiniest capillary ruptures produce visible bruises or tiny pinpoint spots called petechiae.
Liver disease is another important cause. Your liver manufactures most of the proteins involved in blood clotting. When the liver is damaged, as in cirrhosis, it can’t produce enough of these proteins. At the same time, an enlarged spleen (a common complication of cirrhosis) traps platelets and pulls them out of circulation, compounding the problem. Easy bruising alongside fatigue, yellowing skin, or abdominal swelling is a combination that warrants prompt evaluation.
How Doctors Evaluate Unexplained Bruising
When bruising is frequent, large, or appears without any known injury, a doctor will typically start with blood tests. A complete blood count reveals whether your platelet levels are normal. Two additional tests, called PT and PTT, measure how long your blood takes to form a clot. Each test checks a different set of clotting factors, so together they give a broad picture of your clotting system. If clotting times are prolonged, that can point toward liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, von Willebrand disease, or hemophilia.
Your doctor will also ask about your medication and supplement use, family history of bleeding problems, and whether you’ve noticed bleeding in other areas like your gums, nose, or stool.
Patterns Worth Paying Attention To
Most unexplained leg bruises are harmless, especially if you’re over 40, take NSAIDs regularly, or simply have fair skin (bruises show up more easily on lighter skin). But certain patterns suggest something more serious is going on. Bruises larger than a centimeter that appear without any trauma are considered clinically meaningful. Bruises that show up in unusual locations like the torso, back, or face, rather than just the limbs, deserve more attention. Multiple bruises appearing at the same time, bruises accompanied by bleeding from the gums or nose, or a family history of bleeding problems all increase the likelihood of an underlying disorder.
In children, bruising in areas that don’t typically get bumped, like the upper arms, back, or cheeks, or bruises that appear before a child is mobile enough to injure themselves, are red flags that providers are trained to evaluate carefully.
