Relative Location in Geography: Definition & Examples

Relative location describes where a place is in relation to other places. Unlike absolute location, which pins a spot on Earth using exact coordinates like latitude and longitude, relative location uses landmarks, distances, directions, and even travel time to explain where something is. It’s the difference between saying “40.7484° N, 73.9857° W” and saying “the Empire State Building is about 15 blocks from Central Park.” Both describe the same place, but relative location tells you something coordinates alone cannot: how that place connects to the world around it.

How Relative Location Works

Relative location uses reference points that people already understand. You might describe a city as “20 minutes from the airport,” “just south of the state capital,” or “on the coast near the Mexican border.” Each of these descriptions positions a place using distance, direction, travel time, or proximity to a recognizable landmark. The format is flexible. A real estate listing might say a house is “two blocks from the elementary school,” while a weather report might describe a storm as “200 miles east of the coastline.”

Cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) are one of the most common tools. The Empire State Building, for instance, is 365 kilometers (227 miles) north of the White House in Washington, D.C. Cultural labels work too. The “Wild West” is a relative location that loosely refers to parts of the United States west of the Mississippi River, with no precise boundaries at all.

National Geographic makes an interesting observation: even absolute location is technically a form of relative location. Latitude and longitude coordinates simply describe a place’s position relative to the Equator and the prime meridian, two reference lines humans chose as anchors.

Relative Location vs. Absolute Location

Absolute location never changes. The coordinates of a building stay the same whether a new highway is built nearby or a neighboring city doubles in population. Relative location, on the other hand, shifts as the surrounding context changes. A town that was once “a full day’s journey from the capital” might become “a 90-minute drive” after a highway is constructed. The town hasn’t moved, but its relationship to the capital has fundamentally changed.

This dynamic quality is what makes relative location so useful in practice. Coordinates tell you where something sits on a grid. Relative location tells you what that position means: how accessible a place is, what resources are nearby, and how connected it is to everything else.

Where It Fits in Geography

Relative location is one half of the broader “location” theme in the Five Themes of Geography, a framework that organizes the discipline into five core concepts: location, place, region, movement, and human-environment interaction. Location itself splits into absolute (coordinates) and relative (position in context). The other themes build outward from there. “Place” describes what makes a location unique, while “movement” explores how people, goods, and ideas travel between locations.

Geographers also use the terms “site” and “situation” to distinguish between a place’s internal characteristics and its external relationships. Site refers to the physical features of a specific spot: its elevation, soil, water sources, and climate. Situation is essentially a synonym for relative location. It describes where a place sits in relation to its surroundings, how accessible it is, and what connections it has to other places. Gibraltar’s situation, for example, is defined by its position at the southern tip of Spain, near Morocco, controlling the narrow strait between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. That positioning has shaped its strategic importance for centuries.

Why Relative Location Matters

Relative location is one of the strongest forces shaping how cities grow, economies develop, and people move. A city sitting at the intersection of major highways attracts more trade and migration than a remote town without that infrastructure. Ports define the economic life of inland cities by controlling the flow of goods and people. Border towns develop unique cultural and economic identities specifically because of their proximity to another country.

Proximity also shapes everyday decisions in ways most people don’t think of as “geography.” A home’s value rises or falls based on its nearness to good schools, transit stations, or employment centers. A neighborhood adjacent to a floodplain or fault line faces higher insurance rates, stricter building codes, and lower perceived value. A business park near an international airport has a completely different economic profile than one 100 miles inland. None of these qualities come from coordinates. They come from relationships between places.

Trade agreements and supply chains operate on relative location as well. Economic ties between countries create interdependencies that have little to do with raw distance and everything to do with connectivity. Two cities on opposite sides of an ocean can be more economically “close” than two cities 50 miles apart if one pair is linked by shipping routes and trade agreements while the other is separated by a mountain range with no road.

How Relative Location Changes Over Time

Because relative location depends on infrastructure, technology, and human activity, it shifts as those things evolve. As cities expand and new communities develop on their edges, areas that were once easy to reach can become isolated if transportation networks don’t keep pace with growth. Research on urban accessibility has shown that expanding cities often create pockets that are difficult to reach by existing transit systems, even though they’re geographically close to the city center.

Technology reshapes relative location at a larger scale too. Video conferencing, high-speed internet, and global shipping have made previously remote places far more “connected” without changing their coordinates at all. A rural town with fiber-optic internet has a different relative location in the modern economy than the same town would have had 30 years ago. Similarly, a new rail line or airport terminal can redefine a region’s accessibility overnight, drawing investment and population growth that wouldn’t have been possible before.

This is precisely why geographers consider relative location more analytically useful than absolute location for understanding how human systems work. Coordinates are fixed and mathematical. Relative location captures the living, shifting web of connections that actually determines how people experience a place.
