Rosehip oil can help fade acne scars, particularly the dark or red marks left behind after breakouts and, to some degree, the texture changes in scarred skin. In a clinical study, 63% of people using rosehip oil showed no signs of discoloration after 12 weeks, compared to just 21% in the control group. It’s not a miracle fix for deep pitted scars, but for the flat, discolored marks most people mean when they say “acne scars,” it has real evidence behind it.
What Rosehip Oil Actually Does for Scars
Rosehip oil works on acne scars through a few overlapping mechanisms. The oil contains naturally occurring trans-retinoic acid, which is the same active compound found in prescription retinoids. This promotes skin cell turnover, helping newer, more evenly pigmented skin replace the damaged layers on top. It’s present in much lower concentrations than a prescription product, which means slower results but also far less irritation.
The oil is also unusually rich in essential fatty acids. Linoleic acid makes up roughly 44 to 54% of the oil, with alpha-linolenic acid adding another 19 to 37% depending on the source. If you have deep ice pick or boxcar scars, rosehip oil alone probably won’t make them disappear, but it can soften their appearance and improve the surrounding skin tone.
Hypertrophic scars, the raised kind, also showed improvement in the study, though these are less common with typical facial acne.
How to Use It
Apply two to three drops of cold-pressed rosehip oil directly to your scars twice a day, morning and evening. You can use it after any water-based serums and before heavier moisturizers. It absorbs relatively quickly for an oil and layers well under sunscreen. Most people see visible improvement starting around six weeks, with more noticeable results by 12 weeks of consistent use.
Rosehip oil scores a 1 on the comedogenic scale (0 to 5), meaning it’s highly unlikely to clog pores. To get the most out of your bottle, store it in the refrigerator, choose dark glass packaging, and plan to replace it every three to six months. If it smells off, like old cooking oil or crayons, it’s gone rancid and should be discarded regardless of the expiration date on the label.
What Rosehip Oil Won’t Do
Rosehip oil is not a substitute for prescription retinoids, professional chemical peels, or procedures like microneedling when it comes to significant textural scarring. The trans-retinoic acid it contains is present at concentrations far below what you’d find in even a low-strength prescription. For mild to moderate discoloration and early scarring, it performs well as a standalone treatment. For deeper or older scars, it works best as a supporting product alongside more targeted treatments.
It also won’t prevent new acne.
