Shilajit for Men: Testosterone, Fertility, and Strength

Shilajit is primarily used by men to support testosterone levels, improve fertility, and enhance physical performance. This dark, tar-like resin found in Himalayan and other mountain ranges has been a staple in traditional medicine for centuries, but modern clinical trials are now putting numbers behind some of those claims. The most studied benefits center on hormonal health, sperm quality, and exercise recovery.

What Shilajit Actually Contains

Shilajit is composed of 60 to 80% organic matter, 20 to 40% mineral matter, and roughly 5% trace elements. The primary active component is fulvic acid, a compound that acts as a carrier molecule, helping your body absorb nutrients more efficiently at the cellular level. Fulvic acid is widely considered responsible for most of shilajit’s biological effects, from its antioxidant activity to its role in energy production.

The resin also contains a range of polysaccharides built primarily from glucose and galactose, along with other plant-derived sugars. These components work together, but fulvic acid is the one researchers focus on most when studying shilajit’s effects on male health.

Testosterone and Hormonal Support

The benefit most men search for is testosterone support, and the clinical evidence here is encouraging. A placebo-controlled trial in healthy male volunteers found that 90 consecutive days of shilajit supplementation significantly increased total testosterone, free testosterone, and DHEAS (a precursor hormone your body converts into testosterone and other sex hormones). Purified shilajit raised these hormones by 19 to 31% compared to placebo.

Free testosterone is the form that’s actually available for your body to use, so an increase there matters more than a bump in total testosterone alone. The fact that DHEAS also rose suggests shilajit may be working upstream in the hormonal pathway rather than simply mimicking testosterone. That said, these results come from studies lasting around three months, and hormonal changes typically don’t appear until at least four to six weeks of consistent daily use.

Fertility and Sperm Quality

For men dealing with low sperm counts, shilajit has some of the more compelling data among natural supplements. A clinical study in 28 men with oligospermia (low sperm concentration) found that processed shilajit taken over 90 days produced significant improvements across several markers:

  • Total sperm count: increased by 61.4%
  • Semen volume: increased by 37.6%
  • Normal sperm morphology: improved by 18.9%
  • Sperm motility: improved by 12.4 to 17.4% at different time intervals

The study also found a decrease in pus cells and epithelial cells in semen samples, which suggests reduced inflammation in the reproductive tract. These are meaningful numbers for men actively trying to conceive, particularly because the improvements appeared across multiple fertility parameters rather than just one.

Muscle Strength and Exercise Recovery

Shilajit’s effect on physical performance ties back to how your cells produce energy. Animal research found that shilajit supplementation nearly doubled post-exercise levels of ATP, the molecule your cells burn as fuel. Muscle tissue in the supplemented group contained 0.49 micromoles of ATP per gram after exercise, compared to just 0.25 in the unsupplemented group. The overall energy status of muscle cells was also significantly higher.

In humans, an eight-week trial using 500 mg per day found that men in the higher-strength group retained significantly more muscular strength after a fatiguing protocol. Their strength declined by only about 9% after exhaustive exercise, compared to 16 to 17% in the placebo and low-dose groups. The high-dose group also showed lower levels of hydroxyproline, a marker of collagen breakdown that indicates muscle and connective tissue damage. Lower levels after exercise suggest less structural wear and faster recovery.

These results were most pronounced in the stronger half of participants, which hints that shilajit may be more beneficial for men who are already physically active rather than sedentary.

How Long It Takes to Work

Shilajit is not a fast-acting supplement. The timeline looks roughly like this: within the first two weeks, some users notice a mild uptick in energy levels. Between weeks two and six, improvements in endurance, mental clarity, and stress tolerance tend to become more noticeable. The hormonal and fertility benefits, including measurable increases in testosterone and sperm quality, generally require one to three months of continuous daily use. The clinical trials showing significant results all used 90-day protocols, so patience is part of the equation.

Dosage and Form

Most clinical studies use 300 to 500 mg per day of purified shilajit, taken once daily. The 500 mg dose produced the clearest performance benefits in the muscular strength trial, while lower doses didn’t separate from placebo. Shilajit comes as a resin (the traditional form), capsules, or powder. Resin is typically dissolved in warm water or milk. The form matters less than the purity.

Safety and Quality Concerns

The biggest risk with shilajit isn’t the substance itself but contamination. Raw, unprocessed shilajit can contain lead, mercury, and arsenic, all naturally present in the rock formations where it’s harvested. Purified, lab-tested products remove these contaminants, but cheap or unregulated products often skip this step. Look for brands that provide third-party lab testing and specifically confirm heavy metal levels are within safe limits. Avoid any product sold as “raw” or “unprocessed” shilajit, as the cost savings aren’t worth the exposure risk.

At standard doses of 300 to 500 mg per day, purified shilajit is generally well tolerated. It can lower blood pressure and blood sugar, so men already taking medication for either condition should be aware of potential interactions.
