These short-term effects depend heavily on how much you consume, how quickly, and whether you’ve eaten. Here’s what happens in your body from the first drink onward.
How Alcohol Moves Through Your Body
After you swallow an alcoholic drink, most of the alcohol is absorbed through the lining of your small intestine and into your bloodstream. How fast it peaks depends on what you’re drinking. Spirits mixed with a carbonated mixer reach peak blood alcohol concentration in about 36 minutes on average, while wine takes closer to 54 minutes and beer about 62 minutes. Drinking on an empty stomach speeds this up considerably, because food in your stomach slows the rate at which alcohol passes into your intestine.
Once in the bloodstream, alcohol reaches your brain, liver, heart, and other organs rapidly. Your liver breaks it down at a roughly fixed rate, typically processing about one standard drink per hour. If you drink faster than your liver can keep up, your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) climbs, and the effects intensify.
What Happens in Your Brain
Alcohol’s most immediate target is your central nervous system. It amplifies the activity of your brain’s primary calming chemical while simultaneously dampening the main excitatory one. The net result is a brain that’s increasingly sedated: signals between nerve cells slow down, and the regions responsible for judgment, impulse control, and coordination become progressively impaired. This is why even a small amount of alcohol can make you feel relaxed and socially looser, while larger amounts make you clumsy, confused, or drowsy.
Alcohol also triggers a burst of dopamine, the brain chemical tied to pleasure and reward. That initial wave of warmth and euphoria is largely dopamine at work. It’s also why alcohol can feel rewarding in the moment, even as it’s impairing your ability to think clearly.

- BAC 0.08% (three to four drinks): This is the legal driving limit in the United States. Muscle coordination drops measurably, danger detection weakens, and reasoning suffers. One study found that at this level, reaction time slows by an average of 120 milliseconds. That tenth of a second translates to roughly 13 extra feet of travel at highway speed before you even begin to brake.
- BAC 0.15% to 0.30%: Confusion, vomiting, and heavy drowsiness set in. Walking becomes difficult, speech is slurred, and emotional control deteriorates sharply.
- BAC 0.30% to 0.40%: This range is life-threatening. Loss of consciousness, severely slowed breathing, and alcohol poisoning become likely. Without medical attention, a BAC this high can be fatal.

Alcohol irritates the lining of your stomach directly. Interestingly, the type of drink matters more than you might expect. Beer and wine are powerful stimulants of stomach acid production, with beer triggering acid output nearly equal to what your stomach produces at maximum capacity. Higher-proof spirits like whiskey or gin do not stimulate acid secretion in the same way. This is because beer and wine contain fermentation byproducts that drive acid release independent of the alcohol itself.
For many people, this means beer or wine on an empty stomach is more likely to cause that burning, nauseated feeling than a shot of liquor. Drinking water between alcoholic beverages slows this process but doesn’t eliminate it entirely.
Body Temperature Changes
That warm, flushed feeling after a drink is real but misleading. Alcohol causes blood vessels near your skin to widen, sending warm blood to the surface. Your skin heats up, and you feel warmer. Sleep Disruption
Alcohol’s sedative effect makes you fall asleep faster, but the quality of that sleep is poor. You’re also more likely to wake up in the second half of the night as alcohol’s sedative effect wears off and a mild rebound stimulation takes over. Signs of Alcohol Poisoning
The most serious short-term risk of alcohol is poisoning, which occurs when BAC rises high enough to suppress the brain regions that control breathing and consciousness. Warning signs include vomiting while unconscious or semiconscious, extremely slow or irregular breathing (fewer than eight breaths per minute), skin that looks pale or bluish, low body temperature, and inability to be woken up. A person showing these signs needs emergency help immediately. Putting someone “to sleep it off” at this stage can be fatal if they stop breathing or choke on vomit.
