Healthcare is shifting toward a model that is more predictive, more personalized, and increasingly delivered outside hospital walls. The global digital health market alone is projected to grow from $483 billion in 2026 to over $1.17 trillion by 2035, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 10.8%. That investment is funding changes across nearly every layer of medicine, from how diseases are detected to how drugs are prescribed to where patients receive care.
Gene Editing Is Moving From Labs to Clinics
CRISPR, the gene-editing technology that once felt like science fiction, is now in late-stage clinical trials for multiple diseases. Casgevy, the first CRISPR-based therapy approved for sickle cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia in adults and older children, is already being used in patients. CRISPR Therapeutics and Vertex are now running a Phase 3 trial to extend that treatment to children aged 5 to 11 and expect to apply for approval in the first half of 2026.
Other conditions are close behind. Intellia Therapeutics dosed its first patient in a global Phase 3 trial for hereditary angioedema in January 2025, with plans to file for U.S. approval in late 2026 and a commercial launch expected in early 2027. The company is also running two separate Phase 3 trials for hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis, a progressive condition that damages the heart and nerves. These aren’t theoretical timelines. The patients are already enrolled, the dosing is underway, and regulatory submissions are months away rather than years.
What makes this significant for the average person is the shift it represents. These are not treatments that manage symptoms. They edit the underlying genetic code that causes the disease, offering the possibility of a one-time fix for conditions that previously required lifelong medication or repeated blood transfusions.
Prescriptions Tailored to Your DNA
More than 95% of the population carries at least one genetic variant that affects how their body processes common medications. That means the standard dose of a widely prescribed drug could be too strong, too weak, or outright dangerous depending on your genetic makeup. Pharmacogenomics, the practice of using genetic information to guide prescriptions, is moving from niche academic research into everyday clinical use.
Several applications are already proven. Genetic testing before prescribing the blood thinner warfarin helps doctors find the right dose faster, reducing the risk of dangerous bleeding or clotting. Screening patients for a specific gene variant before starting thiopurine treatment for inflammatory bowel disease catches those at high risk for severe drops in blood cell counts, allowing doctors to lower the dose preemptively. HIV patients are routinely screened for a genetic marker that predicts a serious allergic reaction to the antiviral abacavir, a test that has effectively eliminated that side effect in clinical practice.
The direction this is heading is preemptive panel testing: a single genetic test run before you ever need a prescription, with results stored in your medical record so that every future prescription can be cross-referenced against your personal drug-response profile. The infrastructure for this exists. The main barriers are cost, insurance coverage, and integrating genetic data into electronic health records in a way that’s useful to busy clinicians.
Wearable Sensors and Continuous Monitoring
Continuous glucose monitors have already transformed diabetes management, letting people track blood sugar in real time through a small sensor worn on the skin. Current devices from major manufacturers achieve accuracy rates (measured by a metric called MARD, where lower is better) between 8.5% and 9.4%, which is reliable enough for making insulin dosing decisions throughout the day.
The next frontier is fully non-invasive monitoring, sensors that read glucose levels without piercing the skin at all. Several devices are in development. Wizmi, for example, has reported a MARD of 7.23%, which would actually be more accurate than current needle-based sensors. Others, like the Tensor Tip CoG and GlucoTrack, have accuracy ranges that still need improvement before they can replace existing technology. The first non-invasive glucose monitor ever approved by the FDA, the GlucoWatch Biographer, was ultimately pulled from the market because of long warm-up times, daily calibration requirements, and poor performance detecting dangerously low blood sugar. That history explains why regulators are cautious, but the technology has advanced considerably since then.
Beyond glucose, the broader trend is continuous monitoring of multiple health indicators: heart rhythm, blood oxygen, sleep quality, activity levels, and skin temperature. The clinical value comes not from any single reading but from patterns over time. A gradual rise in resting heart rate, a change in sleep architecture, or subtle shifts in heart rhythm variability can signal problems days or weeks before symptoms appear. The practical effect is medicine that reacts to early warnings rather than waiting for a crisis.
Care Moving Outside the Hospital
Hospital-at-home programs, where patients receive acute-level care in their own homes with remote monitoring and visiting clinical teams, expanded rapidly during the pandemic. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services studied outcomes from its Acute Hospital Care at Home initiative and found a mixed picture. For some diagnoses, readmission rates were higher for home-based patients. For others, traditional inpatient care had higher readmission rates. The honest takeaway is that hospital-at-home works well for carefully selected patients with certain conditions but is not a universal replacement for inpatient care.
What is clear is that the model is here to stay. Patients consistently prefer recovering at home, infection risks are lower outside hospital environments, and health systems need the freed-up bed capacity. The technology stack that supports it (remote vital sign monitoring, video consultations, portable diagnostic equipment, medication delivery) is mature enough to make this practical at scale. The remaining challenges are regulatory: defining which patients qualify, ensuring safety standards, and establishing reimbursement structures that make the model financially sustainable for health systems.
A Looming Workforce Crisis
Every technological advance in healthcare depends on having people to deliver care, and the projected shortages are staggering. By 2038, the U.S. is expected to face a shortage of 141,160 physicians, including nearly 70,610 primary care doctors. The nursing shortfall is even larger: roughly 108,960 registered nurses and 245,950 licensed practical nurses.
These numbers get dramatically worse in rural areas. Nonmetropolitan areas face a projected 58% shortage of physicians overall, a 39% shortage of primary care doctors, and a 46% shortage of both dentists and OB-GYNs. Metropolitan areas, by comparison, face shortages in the low single digits for most specialties. The gap between urban and rural healthcare access, already significant, is set to widen considerably.
Mental and behavioral health is another pressure point. Projections show shortages of nearly 99,800 psychologists, 99,780 mental health counselors, and 43,810 psychiatrists by 2038. At a time when demand for mental health services is rising sharply, the supply of providers is falling further behind.
Technology can offset some of this. AI tools that handle documentation, scheduling, and preliminary data review can free clinicians to spend more time with patients. Telehealth extends the reach of specialists to underserved areas. But automation cannot replace the human judgment, physical examination skills, and patient relationships that define healthcare. Addressing the workforce gap will require parallel investments in training pipelines, loan forgiveness programs, and scope-of-practice reforms that allow nurse practitioners and physician assistants to practice more independently.
AI as a Clinical Tool, Not a Replacement
Artificial intelligence is already embedded in healthcare in ways most patients never see. AI algorithms flag potential cancers on mammograms and chest X-rays, identify irregular heart rhythms in wearable device data, and help pathologists analyze tissue samples. The technology excels at pattern recognition across enormous datasets, catching subtle signals that a fatigued human eye might miss.
Where AI is heading is predictive analytics: identifying which patients are most likely to develop complications, deteriorate after surgery, or be readmitted after discharge. This lets care teams intervene earlier rather than react after a problem has already developed. In drug development, AI is compressing the early stages of identifying promising compounds, a process that traditionally takes years of lab work.
The realistic picture is that AI will function as an increasingly powerful assistant to clinicians rather than a standalone decision-maker. Diagnostic AI still requires human oversight, particularly for complex or ambiguous cases. Regulatory frameworks are still catching up to the pace of development. And the liability questions around AI-assisted medical decisions remain largely unresolved. But as a tool that handles routine analysis, surfaces relevant information, and reduces administrative burden, AI is already reshaping daily clinical workflows and will only become more integrated over the next decade.
