Waking up drenched in sweat is surprisingly common and usually has a straightforward explanation. In most cases, the cause is environmental (a warm bedroom, heavy blankets) or tied to something temporary like a viral illness, stress, or alcohol. But when it happens repeatedly or comes with other symptoms, night sweats can signal hormonal changes, medication side effects, sleep disorders, or less commonly, something that needs medical attention.
The Simplest Explanation: Your Bedroom Is Too Warm
Your body temperature naturally dips during sleep, and your brain is highly sensitive to anything that interferes with that cooling process. The recommended bedroom temperature for adults is 60 to 67°F (15 to 19°C), which feels cooler than most people expect. If your room is above that range, or you’re sleeping under heavy bedding, your body compensates by sweating. Memory foam mattresses, synthetic sheets, and fleece pajamas all trap heat close to your skin, compounding the problem.
Before looking for a medical cause, it’s worth ruling out the basics. Drop your thermostat, switch to lighter bedding, and see if the sweating stops. If it does, you’ve found your answer.
Hormonal Shifts and Menopause
For women in their 40s and 50s, night sweats are one of the hallmark symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. As estrogen levels decline, the brain’s internal thermostat becomes hypersensitive. The body’s “thermoneutral zone,” the temperature range where you feel comfortable and don’t need to sweat or shiver, narrows significantly. Small, normal increases in core body temperature that would ordinarily go unnoticed instead trigger a full-blown sweating response.
These episodes can be intense enough to soak through pajamas and sheets. They often come in waves over several years and can persist well beyond the final menstrual period. Night sweats that start months or years after menopause symptoms have ended warrant a separate evaluation, since they’re less likely to be hormonal at that point.
Medications That Cause Night Sweats
Up to 22% of people taking antidepressants experience excessive sweating as a side effect. This happens across all major classes of antidepressants, not just one type. The sweating can be particularly noticeable at night, when you’re lying still and more aware of it.
Other medications commonly linked to night sweats include fever-reducing drugs like aspirin and acetaminophen (which can paradoxically cause rebound sweating), blood pressure medications, and hormonal treatments. If your night sweats started around the same time as a new prescription or a dosage change, that timing is a strong clue. Don’t stop any medication on your own, but it’s worth bringing up with whoever prescribed it.
Sleep Apnea: A Hidden Cause
About 30% of people with obstructive sleep apnea report night sweats, yet most of them don’t connect the two. When your airway collapses during sleep, oxygen levels drop and your body enters a stress response. Frequent awakenings and the accompanying physical struggle increase activity in the nervous system, which ramps up sweating. If you also snore heavily, wake up with headaches, or feel exhausted despite a full night’s sleep, sleep apnea is worth investigating. Treating the apnea often resolves the sweating.
Alcohol, Illness, and Stress
Drinking alcohol before bed is one of the most common triggers for a one-off episode of drenching sweat. Alcohol dilates blood vessels and disrupts your body’s temperature regulation as your liver metabolizes it overnight. Even a moderate amount can be enough.
Acute infections, from the common flu to COVID, frequently cause night sweats as your immune system raises your core temperature to fight off the pathogen. This kind of sweating usually resolves as the illness clears. Anxiety disorders can also activate the same fight-or-flight pathways that trigger sweating, and the effect can be pronounced during sleep when your conscious coping strategies are offline.
When Night Sweats Signal Something Serious
Rarely, persistent night sweats are an early sign of a more serious condition. In oncology, “drenching sweats” have a specific clinical meaning: sweating severe enough that you need to change your bedclothes. When this occurs alongside unexplained weight loss of more than 10% of your body weight over six months and unexplained fevers above 100.4°F (38°C), these three symptoms together are considered red flags for lymphoma and other blood cancers. Individually, night sweats are almost never caused by cancer, but the combination matters.
Certain infections also produce characteristic night sweats. Tuberculosis is the classic example, where sweating at night is listed among the core symptoms alongside a persistent cough, chest pain, and coughing up blood. HIV can also cause night sweats, particularly during the early acute infection phase or as the disease progresses. An overactive thyroid gland is another possibility: it speeds up your metabolism and raises your baseline body temperature, making sweating more likely around the clock, not just at night.
What Warrants a Medical Visit
A single night of heavy sweating after a hot bedroom, a few drinks, or a stressful day is rarely concerning. The pattern matters more than any single episode. The Mayo Clinic recommends scheduling an appointment if night sweats occur regularly, interrupt your sleep, or come with a fever, unexplained weight loss, localized pain, a persistent cough, or diarrhea.
Practical Ways to Sleep Cooler
While you’re sorting out the underlying cause, a few changes can reduce the severity of nighttime sweating. Keep your bedroom between 60 and 67°F. Choose sheets and sleepwear made from materials that pull moisture away from your skin rather than trapping it. Merino wool is one of the best options: its fibers absorb moisture on the inside while the outer surface repels water, so sweat moves away from your body rather than pooling against it. Nylon blends and treated polyester also wick effectively. Cotton absorbs sweat readily but holds onto it, leaving you damp rather than dry.
Sleeping on a breathable mattress topper, using a fan for air circulation, and avoiding alcohol, spicy food, and heavy meals within a few hours of bedtime all help reduce the thermal load your body has to manage overnight.
