Tilting your head to the side and gently pulling on your earlobe is the fastest way to get water out of your ear, but it doesn’t always work on the first try. Water gets trapped in the ear canal because of surface tension, the same force that makes water bead up on a countertop. Your ear canal is a narrow, curved tube (only about 6 millimeters wide in adults), and it has a waxy coating that actually pins water droplets in place rather than letting them slide out freely. The narrowest section of the canal, called the isthmus, can hold water especially tight because surface tension overpowers gravity at that small scale. That’s why simply tipping your head sideways sometimes isn’t enough.
Why Water Gets Stuck
Your ear canal is shaped like a cylinder that ends at the eardrum. When water flows in, it can form a sealed column between the narrow walls. As you tilt your head to drain it, the air pocket behind the water loses pressure and creates a slight vacuum that pulls the water back in. Meanwhile, the waxy lining of the canal grips the edges of the water droplet. You’re essentially fighting two forces at once: surface tension holding the water against the canal walls and a low-pressure air pocket pulling it inward.
Children’s ear canals are roughly half the diameter of an adult’s (about 3.2 mm across versus 6 mm), which makes surface tension even more dominant. That’s one reason kids seem to struggle with trapped water more often after swimming or bath time.
The Gravity and Jiggle Method
Lie down on your side with the affected ear facing the floor, or stand and tilt your head so the ear points straight down. You want the canal as close to vertical as possible so gravity has the best shot at pulling the water column out. While holding that position, gently jiggle your earlobe or tug it in different directions. This reshapes the canal just enough to break the seal that surface tension has created. Give it 30 seconds to a minute. If nothing drains, try hopping gently on one foot with your head still tilted. The added vibration can be enough to dislodge the water.
The Palm Vacuum Technique
Tilt your head so the affected ear faces down, then cup your palm flat over the ear opening to create a tight seal. Press your palm in gently, then pull it away quickly. Repeat this a few times. Each push compresses the air in the canal, and each release creates a brief suction that can shift the water past the narrow point where it’s stuck. Think of it like a tiny plunger. This is one of the more effective methods because it directly counteracts the vacuum that trapped the water in the first place.
The Earlobe Pull
Reach behind your head with the opposite hand, grab the outer part of your ear, and pull it back and slightly upward. This straightens the natural curve of the ear canal, giving the water a more direct path out. Combine this with a head tilt toward the floor for the best results. The CDC specifically recommends pulling the earlobe in different directions while the ear faces down as a post-swim drying step.
Chewing, Yawning, and Jaw Movement
Moving your jaw changes the shape of the ear canal slightly because the joint sits right next to it. Chewing gum, making exaggerated yawning motions, or moving your jaw side to side can shift the water enough to break its grip on the canal walls. Try combining jaw movement with a head tilt. This works particularly well when the water feels deep but isn’t causing real pain.
Using a Hair Dryer
Set a hair dryer to its lowest heat and lowest fan speed. Hold it several inches from your ear and let the warm air flow into the canal opening. The gentle heat evaporates the trapped water without you having to physically dislodge it. Keep the dryer moving so you don’t concentrate heat on one spot. This method is slower but works well for small amounts of water that won’t budge with gravity alone.
Alcohol and Vinegar Drops
A 50-50 mix of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar is a well-known home remedy recommended by sources including Stanford Health Care. Tilt your head so the affected ear faces up, place a few drops into the canal, wait about 30 seconds, then tilt the other way to let everything drain out. The alcohol mixes with the trapped water and evaporates faster than water alone, pulling the moisture with it. The vinegar makes the canal slightly acidic, which discourages bacteria and fungi from growing, a real concern if water has been sitting in there for hours.
One important caution: do not use any drops if you have ear tubes, a perforated eardrum, or any discharge coming from your ear. The eardrum normally acts as a barrier protecting the middle ear. If it’s compromised, liquid can flow through and cause infection. Signs of a perforated eardrum include sudden sharp ear pain that fades quickly, hearing loss, ringing, dizziness, or any fluid draining from the ear.
What Not to Do
Do not stick cotton swabs, bobby pins, fingers, or anything else into your ear canal. Every major cotton swab manufacturer prints a warning on the box telling you not to insert them into the ear canal, and for good reason. Cotton swabs push wax deeper, which can create a plug that makes water drainage even harder. Worse, they can scratch the canal lining (setting the stage for infection) or puncture the eardrum. Medical reports of eardrum perforation, ear canal injury, and wax impaction from cotton swabs go back to the 1970s, and the injuries haven’t stopped.
Also avoid blowing forcefully to try to pop your ears open. The Valsalva maneuver, where you close your mouth, pinch your nose, and blow gently, is designed to equalize pressure in the middle ear behind the eardrum. It doesn’t do much for water trapped in the outer ear canal. And if performed too forcefully, it can rupture the eardrum.
Preventing Trapped Water
The easiest fix is keeping water out in the first place. Silicone earplugs, a swim cap, or custom-fitted swim molds all create a barrier. After swimming or showering, tilt your head to each side and let water drain naturally, then dry your outer ears thoroughly with a towel. Pulling your earlobe in different directions while each ear faces the ground helps clear residual water before it has a chance to settle in.
If you swim frequently and deal with trapped water regularly, ask a healthcare provider about ear-drying drops designed for post-swim use. These are essentially pre-mixed alcohol-based solutions that speed up evaporation. Avoid trying to remove earwax yourself, since wax actually serves a protective role even though it contributes to water trapping. Overly clean canals are more vulnerable to irritation and infection.
Signs the Problem Is More Than Water
Trapped water that doesn’t resolve within a day can lead to swimmer’s ear (otitis externa), an infection of the ear canal. The telltale signs are increasing pain, especially when you tug on the earlobe or press on the small flap in front of the ear opening, along with redness, swelling, or discharge. If pain hasn’t improved within 48 to 72 hours, or you develop a fever above 101°F, the infection may be spreading beyond the canal and needs medical attention. Complete blockage of the ear canal from swelling is another sign that professional treatment is needed.
