What Age Can Babies Get Seasonal Allergies?

Babies under 2 years old almost never get seasonal allergies. Seasonal pollen allergies typically begin between ages 2 and 5, because a child’s immune system needs at least two full seasons of exposure to a pollen before it can develop an allergic response to it. So even if your 1-year-old seems sneezy every spring, something else is likely going on.

Why It Takes at Least Two Years

Allergies aren’t instant reactions to a new substance. They develop in stages. The first time your child’s immune system encounters tree pollen or grass pollen, it may quietly “learn” to recognize it. It’s only after repeated exposure, typically across two or more pollen seasons, that the immune system can mount the exaggerated response we call an allergy. This is why a baby born in March won’t have hay fever symptoms that same spring, or even the following one.

This two-season minimum is also why seasonal allergies become more common as kids get older. Only about 10% of children ages 0 to 5 have a diagnosed seasonal allergy, compared to 21% of kids ages 6 to 11 and 24% of adolescents ages 12 to 17. The longer a child is alive and breathing in pollen, the more chances their immune system has to develop a sensitivity.

What About Indoor Allergens?

Indoor triggers like dust mites, pet dander, and mold work differently from seasonal pollen. Because babies are exposed to these year-round from birth, it’s possible for indoor allergies to show up earlier than outdoor seasonal allergies. Allergic rhinitis in general often begins in children under 5, and for the youngest kids, indoor allergens are the more likely culprit. If your toddler has a constantly stuffy nose regardless of the season, dust mites or pet dander are worth considering before pollen.

Cold or Allergy: How to Tell the Difference

Young children get 6 to 8 colds a year on average, and cold symptoms overlap heavily with allergy symptoms: runny nose, sneezing, congestion. For a baby or toddler under 2, what looks like allergies is almost always a cold or a series of back-to-back colds.

A few differences can help you sort it out in older toddlers and preschoolers who are in the age range where allergies become possible:

  • Fever: Allergies never cause a fever. Colds often do, especially in the first day or two.
  • Duration: A cold resolves in 7 to 10 days. Allergy symptoms persist for weeks, as long as the pollen source is active.
  • Itchiness: Itchy eyes, nose, or throat strongly suggest allergies. Colds don’t typically cause itching.
  • Timing pattern: If symptoms appear at the same time every year, or get worse on windy days and better on rainy ones, that points toward pollen allergy.

When Allergy Testing Is Possible

Skin prick testing, the most common and sensitive method for identifying specific allergens, can technically be performed at any age, though it’s rarely done on infants younger than 6 months. The practical reality is that most allergists won’t test for seasonal pollen allergies in a child under 2, because the results aren’t meaningful yet. A child who hasn’t had enough pollen exposure won’t test positive even if they’re genetically predisposed.

Blood tests that measure allergy-related antibodies are another option, but they tend to be less sensitive than skin prick tests, especially in young children. If your pediatrician suspects allergies in a child over 2, a referral to an allergist for skin testing is the more reliable path.

Signs to Watch for After Age 2

Once your child has lived through two or more pollen seasons, seasonal allergies become a real possibility. The classic signs in a toddler or preschooler include a clear, watery runny nose that won’t quit, frequent sneezing, rubbing or scrunching the nose (sometimes called the “allergic salute”), and red or watery eyes. Some kids develop dark circles under their eyes from chronic congestion.

You might also notice your child breathing through their mouth, sleeping poorly, or being unusually irritable during peak pollen months. These symptoms often get dismissed as “just another cold,” but if the pattern repeats every spring or fall without a fever, allergies are the more likely explanation. Identifying the trigger early makes a real difference, since untreated nasal allergies in young children are linked to disrupted sleep and, in some cases, ear infections from persistent congestion.
