Dogs can develop cataracts at any age, from birth through their senior years, but most cases appear either in the first few years of life (due to genetics) or after age 8 (due to aging or disease). The timing depends heavily on breed, underlying health conditions, and whether the cataract is inherited. Unlike the cloudy, bluish haze that naturally develops in older dogs’ eyes, true cataracts block light from reaching the retina and can lead to blindness.
Three Age Categories of Canine Cataracts
Veterinary ophthalmologists classify cataracts by when they first appear. Congenital cataracts are present at birth or develop within the first few weeks of life. Breeds like the Old English Sheepdog, Welsh Springer Spaniel, and West Highland White Terrier are known to be born with them. These cataracts result from abnormal lens development in the womb and may remain small or progress depending on the dog.
Juvenile cataracts show up between roughly 6 months and 6 years of age. This is the most common category in dogs, and the vast majority are inherited. A dog with juvenile cataracts often has no other health problems. The cataracts may start small in one eye and eventually affect both.
Senile cataracts develop in dogs older than about 8 years, much like age-related cataracts in people. These tend to progress more slowly than juvenile cataracts, but they can still cause significant vision loss over time.
Breeds With the Highest Risk
Hereditary cataracts are documented in more than 100 dog breeds, but some carry a much higher risk than others. The age of onset varies significantly by breed, according to data compiled in the Merck Veterinary Manual:
- Afghan Hound: 6 to 12 months
- Siberian Husky: 6 months or older
- Labrador Retriever: 6 months or older
- Golden Retriever: 6 months or older
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier: 6 months or older
- Australian Shepherd: 2 to 4 years
- American Cocker Spaniel: 1 to 6 years
- Bichon Frise: 2 to 6 years
- Standard Poodle: 1 year or older
- Boston Terrier: present at birth, juvenile, or late onset
- Miniature Schnauzer: present at birth, 6 months, or older
If your dog is one of these breeds, it’s worth watching for early signs of cloudiness in the eyes, even if your dog is still young. Many of these inherited cataracts begin developing well before a dog reaches middle age.
Diabetes Accelerates the Timeline Dramatically
Diabetes is the other major cause of cataracts in dogs, and it works fast. Most diabetic dogs will eventually develop cataracts, and the progression from clear lens to complete blindness can happen in a matter of weeks. This is far faster than age-related or even most hereditary cataracts.
The mechanism is straightforward: excess sugar in the bloodstream gets absorbed by the lens, where it draws in water and causes the lens fibers to swell and become opaque. Because diabetes can strike dogs at various ages, diabetic cataracts don’t fit neatly into the age-based categories. A 5-year-old dog newly diagnosed with diabetes can go blind from cataracts within a month or two. If your dog has been diagnosed with diabetes, rapid changes in eye clarity are something to watch for closely.
How Cataracts Progress
Not all cataracts develop at the same pace, and a cataract that starts small doesn’t always grow to cover the entire lens. Veterinary ophthalmologists describe four main stages.
In the earliest stage, called incipient, less than 15% of the lens is affected. Your dog can still see well, and you may not notice anything wrong. Many incipient cataracts are caught during routine vet exams rather than from visible symptoms at home.
As the cataract grows to cover more of the lens (the immature stage), vision loss becomes variable. Some dogs at this stage bump into furniture in dim lighting or seem hesitant on stairs, while others still navigate their environment well. Once the cataract covers the entire lens (mature stage), the dog is functionally blind in that eye, though the eye still responds to bright light.
In the final stage, called hypermature, the lens begins to break down and resorb. The surface of the lens may appear wrinkled with white patches. This breakdown releases lens proteins into the eye, which frequently triggers painful inflammation. Paradoxically, some dogs at the very end of this stage regain partial vision as the clouded material dissolves, though the quality of that vision is poor.
Nuclear Sclerosis Is Not a Cataract
Many dog owners notice a bluish or grayish haze in their aging dog’s eyes and assume cataracts. In most cases, this is actually nuclear sclerosis, a normal aging change that happens as the lens fibers compress and harden over time. It typically becomes visible around age 7 or 8.
The key difference is what happens to light. Nuclear sclerosis makes the lens translucent, meaning light still passes through, just not as crisply. Your dog might lose some ability to see fine details, but they won’t go blind. Cataracts, by contrast, make the lens opaque. Light is blocked entirely from reaching the retina in the affected area. A veterinarian can distinguish between the two quickly using a focused light examination. If your older dog’s eyes look hazy but they’re still catching treats mid-air and navigating the house without trouble, nuclear sclerosis is the more likely explanation.
Surgery Is the Only Proven Treatment
Cataract surgery in dogs uses the same basic technique as in humans: ultrasonic energy breaks up the clouded lens, which is then suctioned out and replaced with an artificial lens. The success rate is high, ranging from 85% to 95% when the retina is healthy and inflammation is well controlled going in.
The cost is substantial. At Ohio State’s Veterinary Medical Center, the initial eye exam and diagnostics run about $200, and surgery for both eyes costs approximately $5,100 to $6,200. Costs can rise if the dog has diabetes or develops complications. The most common complications after surgery include inflammation inside the eye (which is expected and managed with medication), increased eye pressure, and, more rarely, retinal detachment or infection.
Not every dog with cataracts needs surgery. If the cataract is small and not progressing, or if a senior dog has adapted well to reduced vision, monitoring may be a perfectly reasonable approach. Dogs rely heavily on smell and hearing, and many blind dogs live comfortably in familiar environments.
As for eye drops and supplements marketed to treat or prevent cataracts, no product has been clinically validated or approved by the FDA for this purpose. Large-scale human trials involving antioxidant vitamins like C, E, and carotenoids have shown inconclusive results, and the challenge is even steeper in dogs. The lens gets its nutrients from the fluid inside the eye, and oral supplements struggle to cross that barrier in meaningful concentrations. Surgery remains the only method proven to restore vision once a cataract has formed.
