What Are 5 Foods to Avoid for Neuropathy?

Certain foods can worsen neuropathy by spiking blood sugar, fueling inflammation, or directly damaging nerve fibers. If you’re living with peripheral neuropathy, or trying to prevent it from getting worse, what you eat plays a bigger role than most people realize. Five of the most important foods to cut back on or eliminate are refined carbohydrates, alcohol, foods containing gluten (for sensitive individuals), foods high in trans fats, and products with artificial sweeteners like aspartame.

Refined Carbohydrates and Added Sugar

Blood sugar control is the single most important dietary strategy for preventing and managing neuropathy, especially the type associated with diabetes or prediabetes. Refined carbohydrates, including white bread, white rice, pastries, sugary cereals, and sweetened drinks, are highly glycemic. They cause rapid, dramatic spikes in blood sugar that, over time, damage the small blood vessels supplying your nerves.

The damage happens through a process called oxidative stress. When blood sugar stays elevated, it generates harmful molecules that attack nerve cells and degrade their protective outer coating. This is why diabetic neuropathy is the most common form of peripheral neuropathy worldwide, and why people with prediabetes can develop nerve symptoms before they’re ever diagnosed with diabetes. Replacing refined grains with whole grains like oats, quinoa, and brown rice slows the release of sugar into your bloodstream and reduces this nerve-damaging cycle.

Sugar-sweetened beverages deserve special attention here. A single can of soda can contain 40 grams of sugar, enough to push blood glucose well above the range where nerve damage accelerates. Fruit juice, sweetened coffee drinks, and energy drinks carry similar risks despite sometimes being marketed as healthier options.

Alcohol

Alcohol damages nerves through two separate pathways, and both matter. First, it depletes B vitamins, particularly thiamine (vitamin B1), which your nerves need to function. Alcohol reduces thiamine absorption in the intestine, lowers the liver’s ability to store it, and interferes with the chemical process that converts thiamine into its active, usable form. Thiamine deficiency alone can cause painful neuropathy.

But even with normal thiamine levels, alcohol appears to be directly toxic to nerve fibers. Animal studies show axonal degeneration (the breakdown of nerve cell extensions) after ethanol exposure in subjects with perfectly adequate nutrition. Human research supports this too: the severity of neuropathy correlates with the total amount of alcohol consumed over a lifetime, suggesting a dose-response relationship. In other words, the more you drink, the more nerve damage accumulates, regardless of your vitamin status.

Alcoholic neuropathy typically starts with burning, tingling, or numbness in the feet and hands. If you already have neuropathy from another cause, alcohol accelerates the progression. Even moderate drinking can be problematic if your nerves are already compromised.

Gluten (for People With Gluten Sensitivity)

This one doesn’t apply to everyone, but for a specific subset of people it can be transformative. Gluten neuropathy is the second most common neurological manifestation of gluten sensitivity, after cerebellar ataxia. It’s defined as an otherwise unexplained peripheral neuropathy in someone who tests positive for antigliadin antibodies, which are markers of an immune reaction to gluten.

If you’ve been diagnosed with “idiopathic” neuropathy, meaning your doctors can’t find a cause, gluten sensitivity is worth investigating. Research published in Neurology found that among patients with confirmed gluten neuropathy, those on a strict gluten-free diet were far less likely to experience nerve pain. Specifically, a strict gluten-free diet was associated with an 89% reduction in the odds of peripheral neuropathic pain compared to patients not following the diet. Patients with painless neuropathy were also significantly more likely to already be on a strict gluten-free diet (56% versus 21%).

The key word here is “strict.” Partial reduction of gluten didn’t show the same protective effect. If you suspect gluten may be contributing to your neuropathy, blood testing for antigliadin antibodies is a reasonable first step before committing to a full dietary change.

Trans Fats and Highly Processed Foods

Trans fats, found in partially hydrogenated oils, fried fast food, packaged baked goods, and many shelf-stable snack foods, promote systemic inflammation throughout the body. Chronic low-grade inflammation worsens neuropathy because inflamed tissue compresses and irritates already-vulnerable nerves, and inflammatory molecules can directly interfere with nerve signaling and repair.

Trans fats also contribute to cardiovascular damage and insulin resistance, both of which reduce blood flow to peripheral nerves. Your longest nerves, the ones running to your feet, are especially sensitive to reduced blood supply because they depend on tiny blood vessels that are easily compromised. A diet high in processed foods tends to pair trans fats with excess sodium, refined sugar, and other compounds that compound the problem. Cooking with olive oil, eating whole foods, and reading ingredient labels for “partially hydrogenated” oils are practical ways to reduce your exposure.

Artificial Sweeteners

People managing neuropathy often switch to artificial sweeteners to reduce sugar intake, which makes this category especially tricky. Aspartame, one of the most widely used sugar substitutes, has shown neurotoxic effects on peripheral nerves in laboratory research. A study examining sciatic nerve tissue in rats given aspartame at doses proportional to the FDA-approved acceptable daily intake found significant structural damage: the protective myelin coating around nerve fibers separated and deformed, and the cells responsible for maintaining that coating showed visible deterioration.

Perhaps most concerning, the nerve damage did not fully reverse after four weeks of stopping aspartame consumption, suggesting the effects may be at least partially lasting. While this research was conducted in animals and the translation to humans isn’t one-to-one, it raises a reasonable concern for people whose nerves are already damaged or vulnerable. If you’re looking for alternatives to sugar, stevia and monk fruit extract are options that don’t carry the same neurotoxicity signals in existing research.

What to Eat Instead

Avoiding harmful foods is only half the equation. Nerves need specific nutrients to maintain and repair themselves. B vitamins, particularly B1, B6, and B12, are essential for nerve health. You can get these from eggs, fish, poultry, leafy greens, and legumes. Omega-3 fatty acids from salmon, sardines, walnuts, and flaxseed help reduce inflammation and support the fatty myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibers.

Colorful vegetables and berries provide antioxidants that counteract the oxidative stress driving nerve damage. Magnesium, found in nuts, seeds, and dark leafy greens, supports nerve signaling. The overall pattern matters more than any single food: a diet built around whole, unprocessed ingredients with stable blood sugar effects gives your nerves the best environment to function and heal. Small, consistent meals that avoid sharp glucose spikes are more protective than three large meals, even if the total calorie count is the same.
