What Are Cats Allergic To? Common Allergens & Symptoms

Cats can be allergic to a wide range of substances, from the protein in their food to flea bites to pollen drifting through an open window. The triggers fall into four main categories: food ingredients, flea saliva, environmental allergens, and contact irritants. Knowing which ones cause problems helps you recognize symptoms early and work with a vet to pinpoint the culprit.

Food Allergies

Most feline food allergies trace back to a protein or carbohydrate in the cat’s regular diet. The most common offenders are beef, chicken, fish, eggs, pork, lamb, and turkey. That list may seem counterintuitive since these are standard cat food ingredients, but that’s exactly the point. Cats develop allergies to proteins they eat repeatedly over time, not to exotic ingredients they’ve never encountered.

Food allergies can show up as itchy skin (especially around the head and neck), vomiting, or diarrhea. About 27% of cats with confirmed food allergies first show signs before their first birthday, so this isn’t strictly an older-cat problem. Unlike environmental allergies, food reactions don’t follow a seasonal pattern. If your cat is itchy year-round and not responding to flea treatment, food is a likely suspect.

The only reliable way to diagnose a food allergy is an elimination diet trial. Your vet will put your cat on a diet with a single novel protein (one the cat has never eaten) or a hydrolyzed protein formula for a minimum of six weeks. Eight weeks raises the accuracy above 90%. During that period, the cat eats nothing else: no treats, no table scraps, no flavored medications. If symptoms improve on the restricted diet, return when the old food is reintroduced, and disappear again on the elimination diet, that confirms the allergy.

Flea Allergy Dermatitis

Flea allergy is one of the most common allergic conditions in cats, and it doesn’t take an infestation to cause misery. When a flea bites, it injects saliva containing a cocktail of enzymes, histamine-like compounds, and small proteins that trigger multiple types of immune reactions simultaneously. A cat with flea allergy can react intensely to just a few bites.

The hallmark sign is intense scratching and hair loss concentrated along the lower back, base of the tail, and inner thighs. You may also notice tiny, crusty bumps scattered across the skin, a pattern called miliary dermatitis. Because fleas are fast and cats are meticulous groomers, you might never actually see a flea on an allergic cat. That doesn’t mean fleas aren’t the problem. Year-round flea prevention is the single most effective treatment. If symptoms resolve once fleas are eliminated, you have your answer.

Environmental Allergens

Cats can develop the feline equivalent of hay fever, a condition vets call atopy. The most common environmental triggers include pollen, mold spores, dust mites, storage mites, yeast, and even human or animal dander. Some of these are seasonal (tree and grass pollen), while others persist year-round (dust mites, mold in damp areas). A cat that gets itchy only in spring and fall likely reacts to pollen. One that scratches all year may be reacting to something inside your home.

Environmental allergies tend to affect the skin more than the respiratory system, though cats can develop allergic asthma as well (more on that below). The skin reaction in cats looks different than it does in dogs or humans. Cats typically show one of four patterns: miliary dermatitis (tiny scabby bumps), intense scratching focused on the head and neck, patches of self-inflicted hair loss from overgrooming, or raised plaques and ulcers on the skin or lips.

When a vet suspects environmental allergies, intradermal skin testing is the gold standard. In one study comparing the two main diagnostic approaches, skin testing detected true allergen sensitivities about 91% of the time, while blood-based testing caught only about 23%. Blood tests are highly specific, meaning a positive result is reliable, but they miss the majority of true allergies. Skin testing is better as a screening tool, and either test can help guide allergen-specific immunotherapy, a treatment where tiny amounts of the offending allergen are injected on a schedule to gradually retrain the immune system.

Feline Asthma Triggers

Allergic bronchitis, or feline asthma, is an inflammatory airway condition triggered by inhaled allergens. Cats with asthma wheeze, cough (often in a crouched position that looks like they’re trying to bring up a hairball), and may breathe with visible effort. The triggers overlap with environmental allergens but also include a range of airborne irritants: cigarette smoke, dusty cat litter, air fresheners, hair spray, household chemicals, powders, mold, and pollen.

If your cat coughs or wheezes after you clean the house, light a candle, or switch litter brands, that’s a clue. Reducing airborne irritants at home, using low-dust litter, avoiding aerosol sprays, and keeping living spaces well-ventilated, can significantly reduce flare-ups.

Contact Allergens

Allergic contact dermatitis is rare in cats, but it does happen. Unlike food or environmental allergies, contact reactions occur only where the substance touches the skin. Potential triggers include certain plants and grasses, topical medications, ear drops, flea products, shampoos, carpet fibers, fabric dyes, furniture polish, household cleaners, and even chlorinated water. The reaction typically shows up as redness, irritation, or small bumps at the contact site, often on the belly, paws, or chin where fur is thinnest.

Because it’s uncommon, contact dermatitis is usually a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning your vet will rule out fleas, food, and environmental allergens first.

How Allergy Symptoms Overlap

One of the frustrating things about feline allergies is that fleas, food, and environmental triggers can all produce nearly identical skin reactions. The same cat can show miliary dermatitis from a flea bite, a food protein, or pollen exposure. That’s why diagnosis often follows a structured process: flea control first (the easiest variable to eliminate), then a food trial if symptoms persist, and finally allergy testing for environmental triggers if neither of those resolves the problem.

Itching ranges from mild to severe across all allergy types, and some cats cause significant damage to their own skin through scratching, biting, and overgrooming. Cats with lip ulcers or raised skin plaques occasionally show no itching at all, which can make the connection to allergies less obvious. If your cat is losing fur in patches, developing sores, or grooming one area obsessively, an allergic cause is worth investigating even if the cat doesn’t seem “itchy” in the usual sense.

Managing Allergies Long-Term

Treatment depends entirely on the trigger. Flea allergies are managed with consistent, year-round flea prevention. Food allergies require permanently avoiding the offending ingredient, which usually means switching to a carefully chosen commercial or prescription diet. Environmental allergies are the trickiest because you can’t always remove the allergen from the cat’s world.

For environmental allergies, immunotherapy (allergy shots or oral drops) is the only treatment that addresses the underlying immune response rather than just suppressing symptoms. A typical protocol starts with one to two injections per week, gradually increasing the dose over four to six months, followed by maintenance shots every four weeks for three to five years. It requires patience, but it can reduce or eliminate the need for ongoing medication.

When immunotherapy isn’t practical, vets manage symptoms with medications that control itching and inflammation. The goal is to keep the cat comfortable with the lowest effective dose, since some of these medications carry side effects with long-term use. Combining medication with environmental changes, like air purifiers, frequent washing of bedding, and low-dust litter, often reduces how much medication a cat needs.
