Evidence-based interventions are programs, practices, or treatments that have been tested through rigorous research and shown to produce measurable positive outcomes. The concept rests on three pillars: the best available research evidence, the expertise of the practitioner delivering it, and the values or preferences of the person receiving it. While the term originated in medicine, it now spans healthcare, mental health, education, public health, and social services.

What Makes an Intervention “Evidence-Based”

Not every intervention that seems to work qualifies as evidence-based. The distinction comes down to how thoroughly it has been studied and whether the results hold up under scrutiny. An intervention earns the label when current best evidence, drawn from controlled trials or other scientific methods, supports its effectiveness. That evidence is then weighed alongside clinical expertise and the needs of the individual receiving care.

When strong research exists, it should drive the decision. But evidence-based practice also accounts for situations where the research base is thin. In those cases, decisions lean more heavily on expert opinion, scientific principles, and professional judgment. The goal is never to ignore practitioner experience or patient preferences. It is to make sure that when solid data exists, it actually gets used.

How Evidence Is Ranked

Why Implementation Often Stalls

Knowing what works and actually doing it are very different problems. Research on barriers to adoption has identified several recurring obstacles.
