Humans are biologically omnivores, built to eat a wide mix of plants and animals. Your teeth, gut, and metabolism all point to the same answer: there is no single “natural” human diet, but rather a flexible system shaped by millions of years of eating whatever was available. That flexibility is arguably the most human dietary trait of all.
Still, the details matter. The mix of foods our ancestors ate looked nothing like a modern grocery run, and understanding those differences can help you make sense of your own nutrition.
What Your Body Is Built to Eat
Your teeth offer the most visible clue. Carnivores have prominent canines for tearing meat. Herbivores have wide, flat molars and sharp incisors for grinding and cutting plants. Humans have both: incisors for cutting plant food, modest canines, and broad molars for grinding. This combination is the textbook hallmark of an omnivore, an animal that thrives on mixed sources.
Your digestive tract tells a similar story. Compared to other primates, humans have smaller teeth, a shorter large intestine (where fiber fermentation happens), a proportionally longer small intestine (where fats and proteins are absorbed), and a faster gut passage rate. These traits suggest a long history of eating calorie-dense, easily digested food, including cooked food and animal products, not just raw leaves and fruit.
Vitamin B12 reinforces the point. It is not naturally present in any plant food. The only unfortified sources are animal products: meat, fish, eggs, and dairy. Because your body requires B12 for nerve function and blood cell production, and because you can’t make it yourself, some amount of animal food was clearly part of the ancestral picture. People who eat no animal products today need fortified foods or supplements to avoid deficiency.
What Ancestral Diets Actually Looked Like
There’s a common image of early humans as primarily meat eaters, but the evidence points in a different direction. Studies of modern hunter-gatherer groups like the Hadza of Tanzania, one of the last populations still living a foraging lifestyle, show a diet composed of roughly 80% plant foods. Their staples are tubers, wild berries, baobab fruit, and seasonal honey, supplemented by hunted game. This pattern is consistent across many studied foraging societies: plants form the bulk, animals fill the gaps.
One striking difference from modern diets is fiber intake. Pre-agricultural humans likely consumed upwards of 100 grams of fiber per day from wild roots, tubers, fruits, and seeds. Current dietary guidelines recommend just 20 to 30 grams, and most people in Western countries fall short of even that. This massive drop in fiber has significant consequences for gut bacteria diversity and digestive health.
Fat intake was also different in kind, not just quantity. Ancestral diets provided omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in a ratio close to 1 to 1. The modern Western diet has shifted that ratio to roughly 15 to 1 in favor of omega-6, largely because of vegetable oils, grain-fed meat, and processed food. That original balanced ratio is associated with lower rates of inflammation and chronic disease.
Cooking Changed Everything
Raw foodists sometimes argue that humans should eat only uncooked food, but our biology tells a different story. Humans show clear physical adaptations to a cooked diet: smaller jaws, smaller teeth, a reduced ability to detoxify certain plant compounds, and a gut designed to extract nutrients from softened, heat-processed food rather than raw vegetation. These aren’t recent changes. Researchers estimate that cooking has been shaping human anatomy for hundreds of thousands of years.
Cooking effectively expanded what counted as “natural” food. It made starchy tubers digestible, neutralized toxins in wild plants, and unlocked more calories from meat. Without fire, the human gut as it exists today would struggle to extract enough energy from raw food alone.
Your Genes Are Still Adapting
One of the clearest examples of ongoing dietary evolution is lactose tolerance. Most mammals lose the ability to digest milk sugar after weaning. About two-thirds of the world’s population is still lactose intolerant as adults. But in populations with a long history of dairying, particularly in Central and Northern Europe, the gene for adult lactose digestion spread remarkably fast. By the early Medieval period, more than 60% of Central Europeans could digest milk, and today that number ranges from 70 to 90% in those regions.
This matters because it shows there is no single frozen-in-time “natural” human diet. Your genetic background influences what you digest well. Populations that farmed grains for thousands of years produce more of the starch-digesting enzyme in their saliva than populations that didn’t. People from coastal fishing cultures metabolize certain fats differently. “Natural” is a moving target shaped by where your ancestors lived and what they ate.
What This Means in Practice
If you’re looking for broad principles that align with human biology rather than a rigid food list, the ancestral evidence points in a few consistent directions.
- Plants should dominate. Across nearly all studied hunter-gatherer societies, gathered plant foods (roots, tubers, fruits, nuts, seeds) made up the majority of calories. A plate that’s mostly vegetables and whole plant foods is the closest thing to a universal human dietary pattern.
- Animal foods in moderate amounts. Your need for B12, your gut proportions, and the archaeological record all indicate that some animal food is part of the biological picture. The ancestral version was wild game and fish, not feedlot beef, and the fat profile was dramatically different from modern meat.
- Far more fiber than you’re probably eating. Even getting to 50 grams a day, half the estimated ancestral intake, would mean dramatically increasing your consumption of legumes, whole grains, vegetables, and fruit.
- Balanced fats. Increasing omega-3 intake (from fatty fish, walnuts, flaxseed) and reducing omega-6 intake (from processed seed oils) moves your ratio closer to the ancestral baseline.
- Minimal processed food. Honey was the only “empty calorie” food available to most foragers, and it accounted for a tiny fraction of total energy intake. The modern food environment, dominated by refined sugar, flour, and industrial oils, has no evolutionary precedent.
The human body wasn’t designed for one perfect diet. It was shaped by scarcity, seasons, migration, and local ecology. The unifying theme isn’t a specific food list but a pattern: diverse, mostly plant-based, minimally processed, and adapted to whatever the local environment provided. The further modern eating strays from that pattern, the more health problems tend to follow.
