Each tablet contains 20 milliequivalents of potassium chloride in an extended-release form, meaning the mineral is released slowly as the tablet moves through your digestive system. These tablets are typically prescribed when you can’t get enough potassium through food alone or when another medication you’re taking is pulling potassium out of your body faster than you can replace it.
Why Your Body Needs Potassium
Potassium is the most abundant mineral inside your cells. It plays a direct role in how your nerves send signals, how your heart keeps a steady rhythm, and how your muscles contract and relax. It also helps your kidneys function normally and keeps fluids balanced across cell membranes. When potassium drops too low, these systems start to malfunction, which is why restoring levels matters.

How the Extended-Release Design Works
The “ER” in the name stands for extended release. The potassium chloride is embedded in a wax matrix that dissolves gradually as it travels through your small intestine. All of the potassium is absorbed before the tablet leaves the small intestine, but because it’s released slowly rather than all at once, it’s gentler on your stomach lining than an immediate-release form would be.
After the potassium is absorbed, the empty wax shell passes through the rest of your digestive tract and comes out in your stool. If you notice what looks like a whole tablet in the toilet, that’s the leftover wax matrix. It doesn’t mean the medication didn’t work.
Why Potassium Chloride Over Other Forms
Potassium comes in several supplement forms, including citrate, bicarbonate, and gluconate. Potassium chloride is the preferred formulation because it is the most effective at raising blood potassium levels. The “M20” in Klor-Con M20 refers to the 20 mEq dose. Lower-strength versions (10 mEq and 15 mEq) also exist for people who need a smaller dose.
Signs of Low Potassium
Mild drops in potassium often produce no obvious symptoms, which is why the condition is usually caught through routine blood work. As levels fall further, you might notice muscle weakness, cramps, or fatigue. Some people experience constipation, heart palpitations, or a feeling of “skipped” heartbeats. Severe hypokalemia can cause dangerous heart rhythm problems and muscle paralysis, which is why doctors monitor potassium levels in people at risk and treat deficiencies proactively rather than waiting for symptoms to appear.
How to Take It Safely
Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break it apart, because doing so would release the full dose at once and defeat the purpose of the extended-release design. Taking it with food or right after a meal reduces the chance of stomach upset.
Because too much potassium is just as dangerous as too little, your doctor will order periodic blood tests to make sure your levels stay in the safe range. This is especially important if you have kidney problems, since your kidneys are responsible for clearing excess potassium from your blood. People with severely reduced kidney function generally should not take potassium supplements at all, because the mineral can build up to harmful levels.
